This is not natural
A bunch of holes where the dead used to be underground
Forget supernatural
'Cause all those resting in peace are out walking the streets
Yeah, with no heartbeat

[Chorus:]
Across the sky they can hear you on the other side
A scream that's loud enough to wake the dead
And all alone you bought tickets for the nightmare as you wake the dead

Oh, this is not possible
An empty hole in your chest where your heart used to beat
Does this mean what I think it means?
How could both you and me be about as dead as we could be?
Yeah, with no heartbeat

[Chorus]

Take a walk with me
Walk with the dead
'Cause you knew that we'd have to die sometime
Well, darling, tonight could be...

Let your voice shred miles (of diamond skies)
Just to walk as they wake in the darkness (yeah)
Well, darling, tonight could be a beautiful night to die
(A beautiful night to die, yeah)

Wake the dead
Fuck it, you're dead
Wake the dead
Fuck it, you're dead
Wake the dead
Wake the dead

Across the sky they can hear you
A scream that's loud enough to wake the dead
And all alone you bought tickets for the nightmare as you wake the dead
Wake the dead

Across the sky they can hear you on the other side
A scream that's loud enough to wake the dead
And all alone you bought tickets for the nightmare as you wake the dead
Wake the dead
Wake the dead
Wake the dead
Wake the dead
Wake the dead

General Comment:In my opinion, its a song about society, likening people to the dead, generalising people to all have the same routine, and mindlessly go about their everyday lives without any real thought or care.

General Comment:The part "walk with the dead" when it sings it all slow and pretty-like makes me laugh every time...

Oh and the 'chick' is the SAME SINGER, he just computerized his voice a bit.

General Comment:i think this song is about halloween. that would explain why he says "cause all those resting in peace are out and walking the streets......" i could be wrong, but this is what the song always reminds me of when i listen to it.

General Comment:who cares if its bert singing? i mean i think it is, but it has nothing to do with the song meaning. i agree with cheesecow, the lyrics ON THIS SONG suck. i think the rest of the album has good lyrics. i think this song is just a ballad about the living dead. and leave that afitch kid alone. at least he posted them. you could tell where the chorus is.

General Comment:I love this band, but my god, i've seen 12 year olds write better lyrics than this. (must say, though, Bert sounds really hot at the start of this song. *fans self*)

General Comment:Oh - for anyone that still thinks Bert didnt sing that note, listen to 'Noise and Kisses' on the first album and you'll here a VERY similar note. Its proof, i tell thee!

General Comment:Ok - to clear something up, just because Monique Powell is listed in the credits for this song does NOT mean that the 'ahh ahh' bit in the slow section is her and not Bert.

In fact, if you know Bert's voice properly (esp. from the old days when he used to go for incredible notes, like the end of 'On My Own'), and if you've seen them live and heard when he really 'goes for it' - you'll know that he is capable of this sort of thing - and that the voice is this song on that crazy note is very clearly and obviously Bert's.

My guess is that Monique Powell provides backing vocals, which are of course heard quietly throughout the song (rather than multi-tracking Bert which makes it harder to perform live).

As for the meaning, I don;t think it's actualyl about the living dead; it's a metaphor, given away in the lines

An empty hole in your chest where your heart used to beat
Does this mean what I think it means?
Just how could both you and me be about as dead as we could be

And then the linked metaphor of 'screaming loud enough to wake the dead' - i.e. getting through to the core of emotionally 'dead' people.

The Used are fantastic and the new album is awesome. I don't agree with the person that said if you like this you wont like the first album. I know loads of people who love both, for different but connected reasons. The self-titled album was raw, gutsy and brilliantly varied - with a good set of lyrics to boot. The second and now this album show a gradual increase in instrumentation and experimentation, but with the old rawness and poeticism still evident. Reminds me that American emo can still be sincere.

General Comment:Ok there's no damn edit button right? I swear I refreshed twice and my comment wasn't here so I posted again...

mmmk let's make the most of it...

    This song is good.
    The Used are good.
I've been listening to the first and last album and they're very different, do not try to compare them because you most likely hate one or the other. I love both. I'm special.

If you listen to Lies and then dig up for the first album you'll find it very raw and messy.. yuk

If you're the early beginning fan and you listen to Lies stuff, you'll think it's over produced.. yuk

So it all depends on your timeline, I can assure you each record is good overall and it's part of The Used evolution.
