Lyrics for Sea Lion Woman as interpreted by delial

Sea Lion Woman Lyrics
Sea lion woman
She drink coffee
Sea lion woman
She drink tea
And a rooster crows

Sea lion woman
She drink coffee
She drink tea
And a rooster crows

Sea lion woman
Dressed in red
Smile at the man
When you wake up in his bed

Sea lion woman
Dressed in black
Wink at the man
Then stab him in his back

Sea lion woman
She drink coffee
She drink tea
And a rooster crows

Sea lion woman
Dressed in white
Marry the man
And youll spend a long sweet life

Sea lion woman
Dressed in green
Silver lining and golden seams

Sea lion woman
Dressed in blue
Call on the man
And hope he knows what he can do

Sea lion

Sea lion woman
She drink coffee
She drink tea
And a rooster crows

Sea lion woman
She drink coffee
She drink tea
And a rooster crows

Sea lion woman
Dressed in the blue
Call on the man
And hope he knows what he can do

Sea lion woman
Dressed in red
Smile at the man
When you wake up in his bed

Sea lion woman....

I love this. A lot.

I kind of think that the sea lion woman is longing for real love, but is promiscuous instead, and it does not satisfy her. Like a sea lion lives in water, a sea lion woman would be in the air and not get what it needs to thrive. The sea lion woman should drink water but her thirst is not quenched because she drinks tea and coffee? I'm kind of stabbing in the dark. :/

Sea Lion Woman is alternatively named See the lyin' woman. Sounds like it if you want it to. C:

It's alternately named See-line Woman, actually, but that definitely makes a lot of sense. I have wondered about this often. "See the lyin'."

i loooove this.
lots and lots.

i think this is possibly about a woman who doesn't know what she wants or who she wants to be?
she drinks coffee AND she drinks tea
she changes the outfits... changes "character"
?

This is a very interesting take on Nina Simone's "See-Line Woman" (http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=115553)

The original seems to be about a certain woman, or a certain kind of woman: promiscuous, lascivious, lecherous.

Feist's take seems to express many different women, or the many facets of womanhood.

stages, maybe?
seductress --> jaded --> bridal --> mother --> old&depressed?

or just different kinds of women. or a woman who changes all the time trying to be happy, being all different kinds of women, but it still doesn't work.

I think it's about the wild nature in women - however she looks and acts in the civilised world - drinking coffee and tea and in relationship with various men - she's still wild underneath

I think the song is about women's self-betrayal, the denial of their wild nature. The rooster crows seems to refer to the gospel story of Peter denying knowing Jesus three times before the cock crows (matches in with slight gospel-ly feel of the chorus). by living the civilised veneer of drinking coffee and tea and living false relationships where she pretends to be compliant and sweet, women who are truly wild and fierce at heart betray themselves - but the wildness comes out - stabbing the man in the back.

the time signature is definately not 7/8. i'd say it is 4/4, whats your reasoning for 8/8?

ive always thought that the "sea lion" woman was very versatile, like she drinks coffee, tea, and she can wear all the colours beautifully

It reminds me of "The Lady is a Tramp" that the old jazz singers sing. :) Same theme, similar 'feel' to it.

I just thought of something - the seven deadly sins!
Pride - ?
Envy would be the green, silver, gold verse
Gluttony - nobody really needs coffee and tea all night
Lust - obviously, the red verse
Anger - black
Greed - maybe the green again?
Sloth - blue, perhaps? I would think that verse is about making him do stuff for her...

I don't know, that's kind of iffy, but it might make sense... The biblical type thing fits b/c supposedly the original 'sea lion' was actually 'selah' (it was an old jumprope song or spiritual before simone's version) which is a Bible term meaning (basically) 'think on this carefully'. Can anybody else find credibility in this explanation?

One more thing (sorry). It implies 'she drink coffee' and 'she drink tea' at night... unconventional...

Also, as to earlier explanation by me, maybe the bridal verse is redemption? or she's being fake and using him? that would be greed perhaps.... ???

Okay, one more post only right now, I promise. Pride and Sloth are both supposedly associated with blue. (the others are the same color as the verses I linked them with)

Coincidence? I don't think so...

I read somewhere that this was about a high class prostitute.

Part of the lyrics are missing, here, it's when she says "she'd lie" or "she'd love."

Sea Lion Woman, She'd lie
She drink coffee, She'd lie
She drink tea, She'd lie
And [the] rooster crow, "She'd Lie" (sea lion)
....
Sea Lion Woman, She'd love
She drink coffee, She'd love
She drink tea, She'd love
And the rooster crow "She'd love"

Not entirely sure what this song is about, I'm guessing it has something to do with the lion = lying wordplay, though. Also, I think that the Chromeo remix version of this song on the deluxe version of the CD is better than the original. Love this song.
