I close both locks below the window
I close both blinds and turn away
Sometimes solutions aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye's the only way, oh

[Chorus]
And the sun will set for you
The sun will set for you
And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in gray
And the sun will set for you

In cards and flowers on your window
Your friends all plead for you to stay
Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple
Sometimes goodbye's the only way, oh

[Chorus]

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in gray
And the sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day
Will embrace the world in gray
And the sun will set for you

General Comment:The top-rated answer (of hundreds) on another website:

The writer could be speaking of his spouse, girlfriend, friend or family member(let's say the person is his wife). I imagine she is very ill, nearing the end of her life. He has held on to the hope that she will recover but ultimately realizes he must let her go(the solution). The decision is his only, so he "closes/locks the window" on the rest of the world's opinions. With the "window" being shut and locked, "the world" must leave their thoughts "on the window"(as opposed to INSIDE the window). To make the right decision, he must block out the thoughts and feelings of everyone else. He closes the blinds to shield the sun(life) from her so that she may finally rest in peace. Once the "sun has set" she will no longer feel pain, and he will no longer have to hold on to his hopelessness. This new beginning(for both of them) is not simple, BUT it's the only way.

General Comment:I think this song alludes to being about a pregnant lady who was in a car accident and is about to die ...who has maybe already lost the baby. "sometimes beginnings aren't so simple" (life, beginning.) It is about the singer's sadness over it. Perhaps the singer is the husband/father or just a friend. And the sun will set for you...is the sadness he and so many are feeling over what happened. Flowers and cards on your window are surely about friends leaving them in her hospital room, pleading for her to be able to live. I heard this song on the radio today and it brought back a lot of memories. I love this song. It is full of deep emotion and love.

General Comment:The shadow of the day is something that is deeply troubling somebody. It's casting a shadow on their life and their heart, making it all grey. The song says that no matter how grey you and your day becomes, the sun will eventually set and bury this greyness in complete darkness, and then a new day will begin full of light and with the chance for a brighter day.

It doesn't have to be just a day. The song can be about a general period of grief in somebody's life. Metaphorically it makes sense to use the word day because the cycle of the sun is mentioned as the cure for the problem. But it's all just metaphor.

Eventually that period of grief will end and things can get better. The person in the song is about to give up, contemplating suicide, I think. (sometimes goodbye's the only way -- your friends all plead for you to stay.........the person is locking themselves in isolation).

The song says, "endure the moment, things can get better, people are about you".

General Comment:Clearly, it's about moving on with life. Shit happens all the time. People will come and go but everyone will always find away to live with or without them.

General Comment:This song speaks of someone in great pain to me. This speaks of someone who has suffered a severe loss. Someone very close to this person has recently died unexpectedly. The main person in this song is very depressed because of their loss. Their friends remaining know that the main character is depressed and suicidal. That is the verse about friends pleading for the person to stay. The main character comes to realize that he has t go on with his life and that he loves his friends too much to go through with his suicide. The sun sets on his depression of his friends’ death. He moves on with his life with his friends help.

General Comment:I think that this song can be interpreted differently for different people. But to make the thought as generic as possible, we all have seasons of our lives. Cards and flowers in a dark context are used for only two things, moving and death. Life for sure isn't easy or simple. So whether it means moving on in life or moving on through death, it's important for us to know that this is life, and if it hasn't happened to you already, it will.

My Interpretation:I'm fairly certain its about a person who is either a) been a car accident and is paralyzed or in a comab) tried to commit suicide but failed. It's a calming song about death and how its sometimes to just let go than stay

General Comment:i think it's about the loss of someone u care about; not specifically their death, but if they leave to go somewhere else. Makes me think of my Pop who died a few years age (we scattered his ashes at sunset) but i can see how it would remind someone else of their girlfriend, best mate etc. leaving.

'And the sun will set for you,
The sun will set for you.
And the shadow of the day,
Will embrace the world in grey,
And the sun will set for you.'

i think the 'shadow of the day' is the night (usually occuring after sunset lol)
so the whole sun setting-night is a metaphor for their departure.
-sunset sybols the 'end' of the persons time there. for me, he song says: sometimes you have to part ways, i will miss you.
