Lyrics for Hands Held High as interpreted by theDrunkPianist

Hands Held High Lyrics
Turn my mic up louder, I got to say something.
Lightweight step it aside, when we comin'.
Feel it in your chest, the syllables get pumping.
People on the street, they panic and start running.

Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming.
I jump on my mind, I summon the rhyme of dumping.
Healing the blind, I promise to let the sun in.
Sick of the dark ways, we march to the drumming.

Jump when they tell us they want to see jumping.
Fuck that, I want to see some fist pumping.
Risk something.
Take back what's yours.
Say something that you know they might attack you for

Cause I'm sick of being treated like I have before.
Like I'm stupid standing for what I'm standing for.
Like this war's really just a different brand of war.
Like it doesn't cater to rich and abandon poor

Like they understand you in the back of the jet,
When you can't put gas in your tank,
These fuckers are laughing their way
To the bank and cashing a check
Asking you to have compassion and have some respect

For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay
And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
In their living room laughing like, "What did he say?"

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen

In my living room watching,
But I am not laughing.
'Cause when it gets tense,
I know what might happen.

The world is cold, and bold men take action.
Have to react to get blown into fractions.
10 years old is something to see,
Another kid my age drugged under a G,
Taken and bound and found later under a tree,
I wonder if he thought, "The next one could be me."

Do you see?
The soldiers that are out today.
That brush the dust with bulletproof vests away.
It's ironic.
At times like this you pray,
But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday.

There's bombs in the buses, bikes, roads,
Inside your market, your shops, your clothes,
My dad, he's got a lot of fear I know,
But enough pride inside not to let that show.

My brother had a book he would hold with pride,
A little red cover with a broken spine.
In the back he hand wrote a quote inside,
"When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die."

Meanwhile, the leader just talks away
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay
And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
Both scared and angry like, "What did he say?"

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.

With hands held high into a sky so blue,
The ocean opens up to swallow you. (x6)

listen lovespallbearer, your retarted, obviously your not in the army so shut the fuck up. Also, your wrong, because the other bush, was president about 15 years ago, which is before we saved the kurds dumbass, and if you have proof otherwise send me a link plz. And also, sadamm was doing plenty of things wrong, otherwise he wouldnt be on the list of the worlds worst dictators of all times. But then again Hitlers on that list, and i bet you would be against a war with Hitler too wouldnt you?

We didn't fight a war for oil you morons, that is an ignorant lie spread by retarted liberals because they are all pussies. Just like fatalfreedom said, don't forget about 9/11, the USS Cole, the world trade center bombins of the 90's, or the attempt to blow up the underwater tunnel in new york. Fatalfreedom is 100% right, we can't be attacked like that and not respond.

This is a great song.

I am worried sick about the state of this world and nation. It's comforting to know that other people think the same, and we're not alone. Everything in this so called united land, is just sickening. I don't care how bad of a leader we have right now. He's a human, he's not the only human that's the problem. Humanity is the problem. Remember that when you point the finger.

PS tempflux don't make it sound like we saved the Japan, we dropped atomic bombs on purely civilian areas with absolutely no military presence. We left shadows and radiations that has effected generations of humanity and ecologically speaking. When we dropped the nuclear bomb, we had no idea of the post secondary effects of radiation. We paid a lot larger price than we planed on those two days.

I think the first little bit is about Mike wanting to just speak up about how he feels about the war - and he did - and just get stuff through their head. It's mentioning how Bush is nervouse and isn't suitable for the postition of being President. *It's actually, in the living room laughing, like what did he say?* But the second verse is really sad. And the worst part is that its happening. These poor people are dying... and the rich and famous who wanted this war are nice and comfy in their chairs. I think Bush should fight in the war himself and decide if it should go on.

I knew it was repeating Amen Amen Amen, although it doesn't say it in the lyric books.

And wasn't this war started because America wanted to end terrorism... which makes no sense. Fighting so theres no more fighting.

*sigh* I thought Linkin Park was a safe haven from all this political crap that's swallowing a once great industry, but of corse, I am let down. why can't we all agree that politicas and music just don't mix, if you want to send a message put it in writing, not lyrics. I am truely sick and tired of everytime I turn to a new band that I just so happen to like, they go all political. WHY GOD WHY DID THEY TURN TO THE DARK SIDE!!!! great, the next band to go is, *drum roll* BREAKING BENJAMIN!!!!!
anyone else fell this way or am I a loner here? BTW no political stand point, politics are the devil.

ok guys seriously, if you want to fight over thiss go have a gang war over it or something alright? enough wasting space over your political veiws, hate him, love him, tolerate him, I don't care, and alot of people really don't care about your political rants. one of the reasons i say politics is the devil is because it splits friends, families, and even nations apart, is it really THAT important to you? if so then get a life guys, good lord, and alot of politics say that GAMES cause voilence.
BTW what is going on with calling people retarded and dumbasses? are you really that immature to call people you don't even know mentally slow? another good example of why politics is the devil.

one final thing, it seems that neither side gets the full picture. bush-haters, you know how if you beat someone else up your friends would help you beat him up? well that, in a round-about way is how the situation is in Iraq, Saddam made friends with terrorists, and therefore, is subject to be an enemy of America. that's how war is fought, you don't just go after the weed, you go for all of its roots. also, unnessisary name calling only degrades yourself. lastly, WMD escaping to libya would be like Canada taking ours if russia invaded, very likely.
Bush-supporters, yes, we entered for all the right reasons, but more than a few of you need to understand a few things. one the Iraqi people are, in a lack of a better way to put this, fickle. when the U.S. troops entered Iraq, they were all, 'Yeah Amerika' (purposly put the 'k' there thats how many foriegners spell it) but after every attack on U.S. troops their all 'death to Amerika'. in their minds, if you oppress me, you are my leader, that's how they've spent the last 50 or so years. also there are more than a few other countries we'd have to hit after this, say syria, iran, jordan i believe (hard as hell song on expert for guitar hero II, wait off topic) so don't think the job is done after Iraq and Afganistan.
ok I'm done now, enter hate-ness. go ahead I'm expecting it.

no seriously I deal with this all day long, I'm used to it.

Gamer, your not a loner on that first comment.. Im gona get abused for this, but what the hell is this song doing on a LP album?? Ok good on them for making a political song (like every other band) if thats what they wanted to do... but this isnt Linkin Park of old. Take the song Crawling and put it next to this song, or ANY other song from Hybrid Theory for that matter and try and find a difference in music style between them, a retard could do it. And yes I know bands change and evolve their sound, i just enjoyed the older more (im aloud my own veiw, before some fucking cowboy abuses me about it).. and i doubt im not the only one who feels the same. Still good on them, im sure 'What i've done' has been played on MTV a thousand times more than any other song LP have made, and why not its a good song.. but this one mm not so much

Why do people complain when bands express there opinions? The last time I checked this was still America and free speech is one of our fundamental principals. If you don't like bands "shoving their political views down peoples throats" as I have heard some put it, then don't listen to them. Remember they aren't shoving their views down your throat because you were the one to pick up the music and you voluntarily listened to it.

Gamer, why would you invade Jordan considering they're your allies?

I also find it hilarious with people trying to link Saddam to Al-Qaeda, it's like you're desperate to link everything to 9/11 just so you can run around killing Arabs.

This is a wonderful song to listen to. It's calm but Mike's words give it force. I just wonder why there's the part about "Amen, amen"... I like it, I just didn't know they were religious. I guess I'll read the rest of the comments.

Ok so I think that its obvious that this song is Anti-war. Not necessarily anti every war, just this one and this song illustrates the bad things about war. I do like the way this song sounds and even though the subject is not the happiest it manages to have an uplifting feel.

On another note I guess reading the comments on this song has opened my mind to a couple of things. Maybe its because I am English and don't understand the American way. But most of us are sat here in england thinking how can anyone support bush so I am surprised to find so many people defending him. It's not a bad thing just interesting

This song is not mindless anti-bush rhetoric. This band is simultaneously NOT hypocritical. Perhaps they're the rich, but they aren't asking you to support bush like 99% of the others. They're wealthier people showing support for poor people, not badgering them.

This song's message is like the music video for World on Fire. F***ing amazing.

Rager, you call Bush a tyrant? Hes more like a sad puppet than anything else. He has no power at all, the man is so stupid I doubt he really has any clue what is really going on, right now hes just the definition of a political figurehead and nothing more.

OK, this is my first comment. I got this account just to add my opinion to this specific song.

PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!1

One of the most important things I learned from my Advanced Placement English Literature teacher was that poems (or in this case, song lyrics) can be interpreted differently. As long as you can prove your theme with your available sources (in this case, only 26 lines in a song), then no one's personal theme is wrong.

Here's my interpretation of the song...

There are obviously two speakers. It isn't just Mike complaining about Bush/Iraq. Thats what society wants people to sing about cause it's controversial and seems sympathetic towards those who are losing lives over seas.

The first verse is, I think, a solider.
"when we come in"
"People on the street they panic and start running"
"I promise to let the sun in"
"we march to the drum"
and the lines at the end of this verse shows how the soldiers don't appreciate how the people back in America can do nothing but complain.

"Like this war's really just a different brand of war"
People are sitting on their behinds complaining (like most of you) as if this war has no meaning. You cant see the meaning because you cant comprehend the meaning. This is just like any other war. Something happened to us. Bush reacted (and was the first one to do so after 16 years of terrorism). And now we are tying up loose ends so Iraq can be a positive symbol for countries that suffer from terrorist groups. How can Iraq (and by Iraq, I mean US) inspire semi-stable countries with terror to get rid of terrorism if we leave Iraq in pieces and thats all they have to compare themselves to.

"Like they understand you in the back of the jet
When you can't put gas in your tank"

This is my favorite line. American people want sympathy for the horrible gas prices. and complain about it is if they "understand you in the back of the jet (in Iraq)"

"These fuckers are laughing their way to the bank and cashing the check"

This isn't about RICH people. It's about the typical American Citizen. The average person is trying to stay politically active by complaining about the war, LAUGHING about Bush, and LAUGHING about his reasons for Iraq. They do so as they go cash their checks so they can buy a new cell phone, a flat screen TV, a new car, or lots of fast food. If they care about the stuff they are complaining about, where's their support???

The repetition of "What Did He Say???" is PERFECT!
No one understands.

The second verse is obviously a ten year-old boy. In a family in Iraq.
"In my living room watching but I am not laughing
Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen"

Iraq citizens are not laughing because the terror is not overseas for them. It's in their own towns.

"bold men take action
Have to react or get blown into fractions"

Instead of letting the terrorism pass by, the bold men(and women in the US Military) take action.

"Do you see the soldiers they're out today
They brush the dust from bullet proof vests away"

"But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday
There's bombs in the buses, bikes, roads"
This shows how the speaker of this verse is in Iraq.
and it is also proven in the change between "a leader" to "the leader"

and the whole point of the song is put in the line...
"And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
both scared and angry like "what did he say?"

WHY IS THE WORLD SCARED AND ANGRY?!?!?!
so you have to pay high gas prices. there are worse problems. so there might be another terrorist attack one day in america. THERE'S ONE EVERYDAY IN IRAQ!!!

There are two speakers in the song. and two speakers in the war. Military Soliders, and Iraq Citzens. and both are trying to rid the middle east of terror. Both are suffering and both are dying for the sake of FUTURE freedom. Iraq citizens appreciate the US soldiers. and the US soldiers wouldn't be there if they didn't want to be. SO the only people complaining are those sitting on their butts at home having to pay $3.00 for a gallon of gas after being paid hundreds/thousands of dollars.

GROW SOME BALLS! GET SOME APPRECIATION! LEARN ABOUT THE STUFF YOU'RE COMPLAINING ABOUT! AND HAVE SOME CONSIDERATION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE FAR WORSE PROBLEMS THAN THOSE OF THE AMERICAN LIFE!!!

dont try to be apart of something that you obviously aren't a part of.

and as far as the final line goes. I have never been so offended in my life!

"With hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you"

This doesn't show how people are praying and are about to get "f***ed" over by a wave! how ignorant.

With Hands Held High, as if to pray, to God, as the Ocean, A SYMBOL FOR PEACE, swallows the problems in the middle east.

God Bless America.
God Bless Iraq.
God Bless our troops.
God Bless our president.
God have pity on the ignorant.

justice4all, if you honestly believe people in Iraq want the soldiers there, then you're the ignorant one. Better to live life under a tyrant like Saddam than in constant fear of being blown up when you go out for food.

Then you go on with some typically patriotic bollocks. Fuck nationalism, you seem to believe this war HAD to happen. No it didn't, it's purely in the interest of Bush getting some bullshit legacy where all the obese, dying typical yank hicks love him.

Then you've got all the domestic shite going on inside your borders, where you all seem to think your freedoms are being taken away by Mexicans and Muslims and brown people.

Stop believing in your jesus bollocks and start believing in common sense.

My one and only comment on the Anti/Pro Bush rant is this. What would any other American leader do? The US as a country (not everyone there, but as a philosophy) believes the God personally blesses it. Whenever one man believes God is on his side through unquestioned faith, he can either be a tolerent silent devoter to his chosen faith or fool himself into thinking God is on his side. The US is the latter. I am not attacking any single American, I am making a comment on the basis of which your country is run. Now when such an event as 9/11 occurs, it becomes apparent who the 'good guys' are and the 'bad guys' are. The only problem is that to the bad guys, they are simply proving themselves to their God. From this point on, the other side are taking the same stance as America. Now every single threat to security is seen as a direct attack on your 'way of life'. With Saddam Hussien already feeling pretty good with himself about not getting McNuked in the early 90s, the 'good side' desperately needs a victory against a clearly evil dictator. The problem is Bush simply did not analyse Iraq enough. Iraq is and always has been in a state of civil war between rival Muslim groups. Saddam while being clearly a bad man, managed to bring the country together through tight as hell rule. Americans will never be able to bring Iraq as closely together as it was, and hopefully it can learn from this. Although judging from past experience (Vietnam), it is prone to forget. My personal political opinion is that Bush is not stupid, just foolish. A stupid man cannot be elected into the White House, even with support from the Right. I do not approve of Bush's methods in 'spreading freedom' nor do I approve of his brand of politics. But had another Republican or Democrat for that matter been elected during 9/11, would anything be different? America has a reputation for not being bullied that it must retain to stay the intimidating super power it is. That's my 50cents anyway.

This song is a shining examply of Mike taking Chester's limelight as the voice of Linkin Park. Mike truly excels in delivering passionate lyrics like this and I'm really excited about the future of what Linkin Park's going to do. The church themed haunting organ in the background and the "Amen Amen" to me highlight just how blind faith is the common excuse for war and subsequently murder. Also it shows how in Christianity, what happens is accepted as a plan of God or a move by the Devil and not actually placing the blame on humanity. All we do is pray and say Amen. As if God will solve all of life's problems.
