Lyrics for Hands Held High as interpreted by theDrunkPianist

Hands Held High Lyrics
Turn my mic up louder, I got to say something.
Lightweight step it aside, when we comin'.
Feel it in your chest, the syllables get pumping.
People on the street, they panic and start running.

Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming.
I jump on my mind, I summon the rhyme of dumping.
Healing the blind, I promise to let the sun in.
Sick of the dark ways, we march to the drumming.

Jump when they tell us they want to see jumping.
Fuck that, I want to see some fist pumping.
Risk something.
Take back what's yours.
Say something that you know they might attack you for

Cause I'm sick of being treated like I have before.
Like I'm stupid standing for what I'm standing for.
Like this war's really just a different brand of war.
Like it doesn't cater to rich and abandon poor

Like they understand you in the back of the jet,
When you can't put gas in your tank,
These fuckers are laughing their way
To the bank and cashing a check
Asking you to have compassion and have some respect

For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay
And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
In their living room laughing like, "What did he say?"

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen

In my living room watching,
But I am not laughing.
'Cause when it gets tense,
I know what might happen.

The world is cold, and bold men take action.
Have to react to get blown into fractions.
10 years old is something to see,
Another kid my age drugged under a G,
Taken and bound and found later under a tree,
I wonder if he thought, "The next one could be me."

Do you see?
The soldiers that are out today.
That brush the dust with bulletproof vests away.
It's ironic.
At times like this you pray,
But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday.

There's bombs in the buses, bikes, roads,
Inside your market, your shops, your clothes,
My dad, he's got a lot of fear I know,
But enough pride inside not to let that show.

My brother had a book he would hold with pride,
A little red cover with a broken spine.
In the back he hand wrote a quote inside,
"When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die."

Meanwhile, the leader just talks away
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay
And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
Both scared and angry like, "What did he say?"

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen.

With hands held high into a sky so blue,
The ocean opens up to swallow you. (x6)

After fully listening to the song, part of it is definatly anti-war/anti-bush. However, what I love about what they did is that they didnt just make it ONLY about that. They don't just spend the entire song going off on those things. Like most of their songs, it talks about a personal side of what it's like for the people stuck in the war as well as those watching it including Mike in this situation.

That part of the song has nothing to do with politics or dissing bush. It just focuses on the different perspectives and feelings of war. Anyway, this is a great song overall.

at first listen i could have ben fooled to think this was a fort minor song .. it is something mike aviusly put his heart into writeing .. it sucks that there is such little rapping on this albulm but unlike the other albulms they made the rapping count instead of jsut back ground noise his rapping stounds out and says something.. while i know alot of people like the line about the poor dieing i think the most poweful line in this song and it shows the meaning is actualy "Say something that you know
they might attack you for
cause I'm sick of being treated
like I have before.
Like a stupid standing for
what I'm standing for.

This song is absolutely amazing. It gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

And schirs is an ignorant pleb. Hussein was the secular power keeping control of the chaos in Iraq. He was tyrant, but Bush had no reason to run in a fuck things up. It doesn't matter where we get our oil from, the supply is running out fast and the Monkey King's reasons for going into a false war on terror are transparent.

There's one thing I think we are all missing:

I think Linkin Park is objecting to a war that they don't agree with on grounds different then we mention here, and for the purpose of figuring out what the lines are, we need to stick to their meaning.

Basically, what I see the song as being about is that the war is really playing to the rich. Inflated oil prices only hurt those who are just barely making it as it is. They don't hurt the oil CEO's, who are crazily inflating prices due to the war.

I think LP is more objecting to the song based on humanitarian grounds. They do not seem to be raising questions about our reasons for starting but just the fallout of the war. It also strikes me how their lyrics are not really "f*ck bush" but more about how he seems nervous all the time, it just seems to be them trying to maintain a respect for a leader they disagree with.

Altogether, an amazing track, and I think even for those who agree with the Iraq war it will raise questions about what we are doing over there and what we are accomplishing.

Sorry I mention specs on what i meant: comrade, rager, whytie, schirs. Guys, I'm not attacking you, but your comments were more appropriate in a forum setting NOT specifically about what a song means. I think the amazing thing about this song is that Bush supporters and Bush non-supporters can both dialogue about the meaning in a forum, as long as neither side takes the "f*ck the other side" stance. Please don't be so insightful, I think LP made an effort to get their point across without being petty or irrational. Keep the anger and ranting to a minimum.

You guys need to get your facts straight. WWII had almost nothing to do with the Jews, it started due to the fact that Germany was severely oppressed after WWI and the fact that other nations feared Germany's growing strength. WWI was also started because many nations feared Germany's growing strenght. The Holocaust was a convenient way to justify going to war and disguise the real motives, and it worked damn well. If the allies were as noble as they claimed, they would have began a war with Russia during stalin's reign, as he killed over 20 million people compared ot the 6 million killed by Hitler.

Now that we've got that straightened up, the idea that the US won WWII is simply wrong. WWII was won by Russia, who crippled Germany using the same "Scorched Earth" tactic they used to cripple Napoleon. The US showed up to pick up the pieces.

I also need to adress tempflux's comment about the US "freeing" people from communism. Well, if you consider the Vietnam war an attempt to free the population, then sure. I say attempt because that war was lost. It was also started not because the US wanted to free the people, but because they feared the spread of communism and increaed competition.

If the US freed other's from communism, where were they during Mao's reign over China? no where, because they saw that Mao was weakening China, they didn't care about the people. Where were they during Russia's communist regime, other than the cold war (there was no actual fighting in this war) the US had no involvement.

The only contry they seem to have successfully "freed" is Cuba. If you consider imposing a trade embargo and crippling a coutnry's economy to be freeing them, then they freed them indeed.

the sad part about these people supporting bush..... is that i really think they believe the shit they are saying and have been fed.

but being fed nationalism since the cradle may be tough. maybe some history classes will show them, i mean EVERY gov/society has turned into a tyrrany, but they can keep believing this fairytale that the US is perfect.

hey, um, nobody really mentions anything about the ending of the song, and I really want to know why Linkin Park put a church-sounding

"with hands held high
into a sky so blue
as the ocean opens up
to swallow you"

to finish it off. Does it have some meaning like...the soldiers have faith in the president's actions and then the hell he's sent them to (the ocean) just opens up and swallows them (like they die in combat) or something? more thoughts on this please!!!!

everyone here is close minded, even the bush supporters for putting the anti-Bush people down cos its hypocritical. Bush made many mistakes, he isnt "the devil" which is wrong to say about any president. And to the most of the anti-Bush dudes, you don't really know EXACTLY what you are talking about....i mean really...... schirs, i agree with everything you say Except for: "Also, listen, you don't know shit, so shut the fuck up, no one wants your uninformed oppinion" i see it all the time and its very hypocritical.

Why do you all CARE so much? More likely than not you only think about all the killing going on in the war whenever someone else brings it up or you watch the news. Otherwise, you're probably just washing your car or getting homework done or doing your job or listening to the freaking radio. I know that's true for me. We're all just freaking people.

Linkin Park isn't stepping out of the ordinary, they're just complaining about something no one understands the gravity of, like everyone else in this f***ing country. I bet they've never actually seen a kid get blasted to bits before, they're just recounting the tales told over and over again. It's a freaking f***ing war, of course people die. And whether they're rich or not doesn't really hit the heart of the problem--I'm sure Sadam didn't enjoy having his neck snapped by a rope, like the thousands he killed didn't enjoy being shot. Just like American soldiers don't enjoy having their limbs blown off or watching their best friend die in front of them or being tortured in dark rooms, sometimes never to be liberated. And I'm sure the friends and family of any victim of war enjoy the F***ING call they get to tell them they're freaking loved one is rotting in the ground somewhere.

But WAR HAPPENS in this world, ALL types of people die--I don't really think that ever is going to change, in this world. Hell, innocent people die everyday whether it's from planes crashing into towers to kill thousands or a lady getting mugged and then raped in a shadowed alley. The least we could do is stop criticizing things we don't comprehend, and instead respect what really matters, the bravery and courage given in attempt to stop the killing. Leaders always get the limelight and get hammered over the head for what they're doing at one point, nobody's doing anything new here. But you know, there could be a sense of decency here and there could be respect for the actual persom, if not for the actions he commits. When you name call, you sound like a freaking five-year-old; and maybe that's what you are. We're all only human, but we shouldn't act like animals. Until you can back up what you say, don't say it.

Don't say 'Amen' to something you don't F***ING understand.

It's not "10 years old is something to see,
Another kid my age drugged under a G",

"10 years old is something to see,
Another kid my age drugged under a JEEP"

Makes alot more sence, and its what they put in their booklet of lyrics that came with the album.

aihgt, time to set all you fuckers straight. I do love this song, but when i really like a song, i mostly like the way the music and lyrics go together, not what they mean. I love the band disturbed and the songs, but i dont think anyone loves the disturbing lyrics..

When the U.S. nuked Japan, we saved thousands upon thousands of american lives that were going to be sent in. The nuke allowed us to not have to send these troops in. Also, Japan attacked us first at our own ports. We did not attack them first, so if they mess with the U.S., then they should expect the worse.

Another issue, is the war today. Gas prices are going great. Everyone is just spoiled because they were fluctuate a little bit. Even at $3.00+ a gallon, the ratio of gas prices to average income made today is much lower than it was years ago. The prices back then were much lower, but americans didnt make near as much as they do today.

The war in Iraq is not about oil. If it was, we would have taken over Iraq by now and begun harvesting oil and processing it. If we left Iraq right now, thousands and thousands of innocent lives will be lost. All of the surrounding countries would invade Iraq and it would be total chaos. Also, we are in Iraq because it is close to Iran. Iran is trying to make nuclear weapons underneath the mountains. This position allows us to be ready to invade if we have to. Also, our initial reason for going over there was to investigate weapons of mass destruction. There were weapons of mass destruction, but they were moved, possibly to syria and hid below ground.

Everyone needs to stop hating on Bush. He has done a good job running our country and deserves more credit. I am a Bush fan and he has done a great job to me.

Also, the quote, "when the rich wage war, its the poor who die" was probably also gotten from System of a Down in their one song that says, "why dont presidents fight the war, why do they always send the poor." this quote is not true. I know several men from wealthy families that serve in the military.

OK i just love how this forum thing has nothin to do with the song anymore and is just about arguing, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Right, alias3r, "when the rich wage war it's the poor who die is a Jean-paul Sartre, not a SOAD quote you uneducated nutsack.

And yes, how silly of me, we've got to stop the Iranians in their secret batcaves under the mountains from mining nuclear weapons and growing napalm on trees and brewing their nun-killing, baby drowning elf-magic. If we weren't in Iraq (where the people we're "liberating" are the ones attacking us) the whole place would just fall apart. Are the bullets holding up the walls or something?

"Also, our initial reason for going over there was to investigate weapons of mass destruction. There were weapons of mass destruction, but they were moved, possibly to syria and hid below ground."

That cracks me up, yes of course there were WMDs and we were right on the cusp of finding them, and then they vanished underneath the Syrian mountains...honestly...you f**king scrote.
