declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

- justice-

declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

- justice -

start your own currency
make your own stamp
protect your language

- justice -

declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

make your own flag
make your own flag
make your own flag
make your own flag

raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag

declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

damn colonists
ignore their patronizing
tear off their blindfold
open their eyes

declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

with a flag and a trumpet
go to the top
of your highest mountain

and raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag
raise your flag

declare independence
don't let them do that to you
declare independence
don't let them do that to you

raise the flag

My Opinion:I love the simplicity the lyrics have, but the complicated music. The music sounds like she's holding back anger, but through the vocals, she releases it.

General Comment:i immanently thought of Tibet or American Colonization with the Native Americans, adn even tho its geared toward a specific place i think any1 country could use this as a athemn of Independence, once i think nothing on Volta will be as good as Earth Intruders BAM

General Comment:The speaker encourages unrepresented nations and peoples to assert themselves as countries. Also, this metaphorically urges people in abusive/bad/submissive relationships to do likewise.

General Comment:even though everyone says this song is about declaring independence, i dont think it is. If you see the video, it seems shes really mocking those people and its ironic. Shes the one controlling the people, tied up in ropes, and sombody suggested that maybe shes saying everyones trying to hard to be unique and different when they're all turning into the same thing.

General Comment:i think every black person needs to listen to this song. its inspirational. 'damn colonists. ignore their patronizing. tear off your blindfold. open your eyes.' it could mean we need to stop letting the white man tell us we're stupid and inferior and open our eyes so that we can do what we need to do to be succesful, and we shouldn't let anybody hold us down. that's how I see it. but i like how its ambiguous. i just think it can speak directly to african-americans.

General Comment:wow I discovered this song when I saw a video where she used the reacTable (that instrument just amazed me!). I really like the lyrics as they can be interpreted both "politically" and personally.

    General Comment:hehe indeed.

I was gonna write something along the lines of th1nk4y0urself. Because it features very general lyrics I tend to turn to the feeling, the essence of the song. Which is very rebellious. And it does also allow it to become more malleable to the lives of anyone who listens to it.

    Amazing song =)
