Lyrics for All Cleaned Out as interpreted by Petey9

All Cleaned Out Lyrics
Here come your pride and joy
the comic little drunk
you call your boy
making everybody smile
who takes your pretty plan
and then becomes a disappearing man
after a little while

I saw you with your make-up running down
now what’s that all about
you say you don’t want anyone around
cause you’re all cleaned out

you toss the empty beer
not really as composed as you appear
a icicle inside
wearing clothes that clash
wondering is this treasure, is this trash
still trying to decide
about 5 o'clock here comes your clown
with the foot he’s throwing down

but all you say is you don’t want anyone around
come not right now
there ain’t nothing to dream
you don’t want to think about it

I’m sorry you seem so stumped
and I’m sorry you think you have to hold your tongue
when your so pretty and smart
I’m seeing you caving in
becoming afraid of all these men
that you’ve given your heart

I saw you with your make up running down
now what’s that all about
you say you don’t want anyone around
cause you’re cleaned out
all cleaned out
all cleaned out

"with the foot he's throwing down" i think.

i think he's talking about a single mom he knows who is struggling to find peace with a man and with herself.
it's a really good

Ya, I think it's about Elliott leaving his mom to deal with his step-dad.
All cleaned out i think means, kinda emotionally drained. "all out of tears to cry" kind of thing

Idiots
the songs is about his mom
and how these guys are all drunken
& disapear after a while
and after she has given her heart to them
then they just hurt her
& the clown is the guy that she is with
and shes just turning elliott away along with his brothers and sisters
because she doesnt want them to see her like that

do some research thats what the song is about

lexito02: elliott considers himself a pop artist not a folk artist so although his songs may have a meaning that you can go research on the surface pop songs are meant for open interpretation by the masses so if you want something to research research elliott and his ideas of music he wouldn't want some argument over what the song is about to him it was music it's what he did and whatever it means to somebody is what it means to them....now...on with what i think i do agree with the idea that the clown is the guy she is with because elliott uses a clown a lot of the time to recognize a significant other of whatever sort (perhaps referring to how a guy will be a clown to get a girl?) and it is most likely about a woman who is having some relationship problems and is trying to hide it while at the same time is trying to make the best for someone else

Yeah, this is very specifically "in your face" about the problems he had with his Mom and step-dad. He made it very clear.

pretty sure it's "there aint nothing to drink" not dream, not only because it rhymes but because...well, hello

fucking so happy to have this song now. a lot of "new moon" was newly remastered versions of muffled-sounding demos i had collected (which was great!), but this one was totally new to me, and i love it!

also, I hear "sorry you seem so stung" instead of stumped, again because of the rhyme, and because of the stronger emotional implications.

I say it's "With the front he's throwing down". "With the foot he's throwing down" doesn't make sense.

I agree with chogg and ieatfood. after listening to this song many times (i have had new moon in my car cd player since i got it) i also believe the words are "drink", "stung", and "front" although oddly "foot he's throwing down" makes sense to me because it would mean that he's in control of her (throws his foot down). the song is about a woman being controlled by a man, a woman who was probably rather spunky and opinionated before but has lost her confidence through the relationship with this dude who turned into a jerk as soon as the relationship ensued. I don't know who the song is about but i prefer to think of it as a universal theme rather than being about these people i don't know. i can apply it to my own life.

I think this song is sort of a follow up to Waltz #2. especially with the lines

you toss the empty beer
not really as composed as you appear
a icicle inside

I agree with teejmeister that Elliott's music is open to interpretation. Yes, the song is about his mom, but it means different things to different people. I don't think it's fair to say that anyone who thinks any otherwise is a idiot.

Damn! Elliott had a keen way of detatching himself from the situation to paint a vivid picture.

There are undeniable similarities between some parts of this song and the song Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself? by Morrissey. Give it a listen. You'll hear it.

Who would kill him?

Douchebags that were going to say "he killed himself" until you read this: On the suicide note "he" left, It read:

I'm so sorry - love, Elliot Smith.

Why would he spell his name wrong?

actually mybodyisacage: the corinerer said he made the mistake and it really was spelled elliott the way he wrote it. thank you for doing some in depth research

maybe this song is about his mom, but it is universal too. It pictures a situation, a state, a type of relationship that a lot of people have... A disappearing man... don't want anyone around... become afraid of men...
for me, the best part of the song is "and I’m sorry you think you have to hold your tongue
when you're so pretty and smart"... it's a beautiful line...

I loooove this song. I can totally relate to it. It's weird. I cut some people out of my life and I quit taking prescrip. meds and quit smoking and quit drinking and I felt "all cleaned out" and I kind of don't want anyone around because I'm afraid I might get distracted from taking care of myself. I don't know..I don't feel like going into more detail. But yeah, this is a great song.

First I disliked this song in a way because of the Elliott-unusulal simple guitarplaying. Howeveer the lyrics and melody is intense and pretty obviously "about his mom".
"your comic little drunk" "your clown"...these self-descripitions fucking hurt!
Big love Elliott!!!
