In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
The boys that made me lose the blues tonight, and then my eyesight
All together, playing games of cards
Gambling the tiny shards of brass, once my heart
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
I'm looking through the window from the garden
Waiting for the call to my hotel room
I'm tired of writing elegies to boredom
I just want to be at Sanssouci tonight
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
Surely not the one that loves me truly, only
He's probably down at the stables, there
Gently polishing my cabriolet, only
I don't care, I really want to go
So I'm opening the doorway to the ballroom
Callin' up some dude from my hotel room
I'm tired of writing elegies in general
I just want to be at Sanssouci tonight
Tonight, tonight
The candles seem to all have been blown out
Cupid's wings have cobweb rings and no one's about
Could it be I came to the wrong place?
But I swear I saw them climb the stairs, that sweet mystery
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
It's only when you're outside that you notice
Only through the window you can see them
Once the door is open all will vanish
Ain't nobody at Sanssouci tonight
Tonight, tonight

Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
It's only when you're outside that you notice
Only through the window you can see them
Once the door is open all will vanish
Ain't nobody at Sanssouci tonight
Tonight, tonight

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Blue

Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Rufus said this song is about the palace just outside Berlin and also spending a lot of time in a hotel room. 'From the sublime .... to the sublime!'

... so the only ones who are real in this song are the singer and his lover? The two of them, avoidance, and too much time in hotel rooms. Ennui kills the best of intentions. And the best of relationships.
"The boys that made me lose the blues and then my eyesight All together, playing games of cards Gambling the tiny shards of brass, once my heart"
does anyone else think this is to do with his past with crystal meths?
I think this song is a direct reference to "the Happy Prince" by Oscar Wilde. Sans-Souci is the palace the prince lived in..and if you were to read the short story you would notice other references..especially the lines quoted by rosie posie...in the story the prince gives up his eyesight to help people in his city.
i just read in spin that this song supposedly implies that he is not "totally satisfied with sobriety"
he used to be a meth head
Sanssouci is Sans Souci and means = without concern/ Without worry.
I learnt that from listening to Rhod Gilbert on BBC Wales radio
I know he supposedly briefly lost his eyesight due to meth abuse....maybe he's cross referencing that with the Oscar Wilde story? The boredom reference seems to clinch it for me that this song is somewhat about maintaining sobriety. It's fucking boredom that's the worst part about not using.
I love the little flute line in the background.
Since "sans souci" means "without worries" or something to that effect, this song always reminds me that no one really is without worries/concerns/problems. I'm reading it as if Sanssouci is some kind of bar or whatever that represents being entirely without worries - giving you time to drink and party and whatever. Being at Sanssouci means that you have no troubles.
"I just want to be at Sanssouci tonight"
"It's only when you're outside that you notice Only through the window you can see them Once the door is open, all will vanish Ain't nobody at Sanssouci tonight."
Hell, I need to polish my skills in describing things, haha.
