Well there ain't nothing to this but your daughter
And the life you would not give her break your plans
Traipsed across the continent a squatter
For your lies at night to sleep between my hands

When the lights come on this whole place gets ugly
But when they're out strangers fall in love
She could never say that flat out she don't want me
Cause I could never say that half way ain't enough

New Order's on the turn table we're dancing
Cause what else do you do when you don't talk?
Crucified to crawl into your mansion
Ya, that's why I learned to crawl before I walked

We're back where we belong
Straight back where we belong
No days for nights, no cocaine cons
Just back where we belong

Take me out back to your piranhas
And beat me until I can't even stand
Your whole life a plane without no landing gear
So if this is it then come on let me land

That trailer trash pedigree is calling
It rats you out when you're down on all fours
Me I like to cast my death on yesterday
Cause what doesn't kill us now just makes us better whores

We're back where we belong
Straight back where we belong
No days for nights, no cocaine cons
Just back where we belong

Go put it in the ground
Go bury it some place it can't be found
Go put it in the ground

Well there ain't nothing to this but your daughter
And the life you would not give her break your plans
Traipsed across the continent a squatter
For your lies at night to sleep between my hands

General Comment:this song is kind of a summary of the relationship he had with his wife. It talks about the distance between them, how they never really spoke or had any sort of real conversation, how she basically was in it for the money and he felt that he was led on a wild goose chase for love. the title born losers is really a metaphor for "set up to fail" speaking to the relationship, right from the beginning it was going to fail and there was nothing he could have done. right back where we belong. the line what doesn't kill us now just makes us better whores is really powerful and i take it to be a direct drug reference, clearly to cocaine. But it has a broader meaning, that what ever it is that we live for, whatever it is that gets you out of bed in the morning, just makes us more desperate to hold on to it. i love this song

Lyric Correction:I think the lyric is "no dance floor nights".

General Comment:I have to say, I always argued with people who said the lyrics in the song were "pirannas" instead of "promise
" and "cons" instead if "calls", but after hearing his "Live at Massey Hall" cd I think that dispute can finally
be put to rest... he's clearly saying "pirannas" and "cons".

General Comment:Regarding the first and last verses, I also thought MG is referring to his wife having an abortion. I took it as Matt wanting to settle down a bit, start a family while his wife wanted to continue the partying and not to be tied down with a baby. That's just what my first initial thought was. Maybe it was a miscarriage but that doesn't really jive with the "And the life you would not give her" line.

General Comment:I always thought it was "traipsed across the continent in a squalor", but I guess they both work.

General Comment:At first I thought this song was about abortion. I guess I was close. Thanks ms836 for what seems to be a dead-on interpretation. Great song.

General Comment:the miscarriage story is legit. his wife had a miscarriage right near the expectancy day. and since matt is so mental, that must have wrecked him. the miscarriage is one of the main reasons the marriage didn't last, and that he eventually ODed. luckily, he survived. This song is definitely a solid FUCK YOU to his ex-wife, but most of it is about how the miscarriage wrecked their marriage. review lines like "there ain't nothin to this but your daughter", "Your whole life, a plane without no landing gear
So if this is it, then come on let me land", and "Go put it in the ground
Go bury it somewhere it can't be found
Go put it in the ground" and think about the heavy symbolism there in regards to his unborn child. also, the title "born losers" is a dead give away. bottom line though, MG is pure brilliance

General Comment:Saw him live on the 6th, and before playing this he said, "This song's about a girl from your town. But I won't hold that against the rest of you." I knew it was about his ex, but it still blew my mind when he said that. Amazing (and amazingly angry) to hear live.

General Comment:While there may be some autobiographical content in the song, at its very base the song is ultimately about failure and disappointment. But in that disappointment, there is an undeniable honesty about the situation. The author is at his rock bottom. There is no ego stroking by friends or drugs. There is just stark reality. And that is more real than anything. That is the place we belong. No more cocaine cons.
