I kind of feel like it's a back and forth between two people. Like the main verse and bridge is her feelings toward this guy, but the chorus is how he feels about her. She wants something deep and connected, and he's just filling the time before he can get back to whoever "her" is in the song.

Some things need to be corrected:

I relate to this song on an exact level. It's crazy. It's a great song.

seems like its all about the love she has for someone who she's having an affair with who wont commit and that he views her jus as a shag

Since nobody else has posted, I'll try to start it off! But this is all just from my head, and I may get it totally wrong!

I think what she's saying in all the bits like "Then you'd say all of the right things without a clue But you'd save the best for last Like I'm the one for you" is that she wants him to say he's in love with her and all that - she wants real, stong feelings from him.

BUT, she knows he's a player, and that actually it'll never last. Therefore her emotions and feelings for him keep switching from wanting him to be serious about it and feeling like she really loves him, to knowing that he's a player, and then trying to be strong and saying that he doesn't mean that much to her either. Hence the bit that goes "You should know that you're just a temporary fix This is not rooted with you it don't mean that much to me You're just a filler in the space that happened to be free How dare you think you'd get away with trying to play me" - she knows the truth really and is trying to be strong, and make herself believe he doesn't mean that much to her.

She knows that the truth is that he's a player and that he's not that serious, but still she always comes back to the fact that she WANTS it to be real, and that her hope keeps her illusions of love going - "But, despite the truth that I know I find it hard to let go and give up on you Seems I love the things you do Like the meaner you treat me the more eager I am To persist with this heartbreak and running around And I think that I know things may never change I'm still hoping one day I might hear you say

I think the reason I think it's about this is becasue I'm in that situation right now - being with someone who you know is just having fun and isn't feeling anything strong and serious for you, but you want it to be more, but really deep down you know the truth and try to make yourself think like they are and not being so serious.

However, I could be completely wrong?! I hope when Adele's album comes out next year she becomes really successful cos I think her songs are amazing :)

this is someone she didn't realise she liked and felt that he would always be there for her and he was always there for her to fall back on when ther was space that happened to be free and now she realises he isn't so dependable and is shocked that he isn't always there for her and the more nothing is happening the more shes falling deeper and deeper for him.

i don't think its all that complicated, its just a scenario where she wants this person more because of the mistreatment, and at the same time she knows she shouldn't want it or need it but she still does - so there's the juxtaposition in the song from her being positive and in love, and on the contrary there's the negative side where she wants him to think she never wanted him in the first place; she used him. she desperately wants what she can't or shouldn't have. but then again, maybe i been hitting the pipe a little too hard.

I wish there was a part2 song cause I wanna know what she did... My situation might be the same so ill explain mine taking the lyrics.

It started as "temporary fix" I allowed it and started the concept of me not taking him seriously because there was an ex, and I was protecting myself trying to make myself and him believe that I wasn’t falling for him. And as she says he might go back to her.

and when I saw he was "still not mentioning love" since I’m a proud person it hurt my ego that he was playing me. ArrgH! I would go impatient and tell him "How dare you think you'd get away with trying to play me?" “You're just a filler in the space”

You know its not even close to happening that his going to say “all of the right things” But you believe because you want it so much. You even fool yourself to think that his just “saving the best (yourself) for last”

I’m the “filler in the space”, because I permitted it, when I stop and give myself value, if it’s not too late, maybe he’ll “want me properly”

This song is great, it expresses the feelings you get when someone is giving you mixed messages, you get defensive occasionally, but you still get hurt and fall in love by yourself.

About putting up with someone that treats you like crap. You wish you could let go, but there's still the hope one day they'll turn around and it will finally be worth it...but it's not.

So true; sometimes the more someone pulls away, the more it makes you want them. Depressing but true.

i agree, to me it sounds like she is saying, "i'm taking these chances and getting no where"
