Lyrics for Come On Get Higher as interpreted by JimHC

Come On Get Higher Lyrics
I miss the sound of your voice
I miss the rush of your skin
I miss the still of the silence
as you breathe out and I breathe in

if I could walk on water
if i could tell you what's next
make you believe
make you forget

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me in love

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me in love

I miss the sound of your voice
the loudest thing in my head
and I ache to remember
all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said

if I could walk on water
if I could tell you what's next
make you believe
make you forget

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me in love

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me in love

I feel the pull of your heart
I taste the sparks on your tongue
I see angels and devils and god when you come on
hold on...

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me in love

come on get higher
loosen my lips
faith and desire
and the swing of your hips
just pull me down hard
and drown me
drown me in love

it's all wrong
it's all wrong
it's all wrong, its so right

come on get higher
come on and get higher
because everything works love
because everything works in your arms

Just wanted to say that I saw Matt perform last night in Orlando and he is VERY IMPRESSIVE live. He is quite the comedian, and likes to use the "F" word all the time, but he is very talented and worth going to see in concert. Loved it! (Oh ya, he's even hotter in person).

i don't feel that the song has a very obvious inclination towards sex. or at least, he doesn't merely talk about it from a lustful perspective. matt craftfully incorporates how exactly one can feel when in love - not just physically, but the emotional thrill you get out of being so intimate with another human being. i think there are also other interpretations of this song, depending on how you choose to look at it. maybe he's contemplating his emotional connection/chemistry with this woman, but all he really wants is to cut off those strings and embrace her physically without having to question his motives. being with her gives him such a high that he could possibly want nothing more. although the prominent feeling that you get out of such a scenario is lust, i feel it symbolizes something more primitive than that - he wants to be loved, and he wants to feel that connection so badly that he wants her to take him away completely. the "faith" interpretation and "it's all wrong" also makes me wonder if he's cheating on someone else with her. he realizes the moral repurcussions of what he has done, but yet he also feels he can never go back - he obviously desires and loves this woman to bits.

Matt Nathanson says the album is about intimacy. This song’s about wanting to be with someone and, basically, have lots of sex with them.

“Hold me down hard, loosen my lips” – He wants her to literally hold him down hard and kiss him. And he could also mean he wants her to push him to open up to her. It could be a reference to the idea that most men need sexual intimacy to really experience emotional intimacy with a woman. He’ll talk more if she holds him down hard. The swing of her hips is going to get farther than any words she might say.

“and I ache to remember all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said.” – He’s trying to remember a conversation that they had. Maybe she blew him away during their first conversations, and he wishes he remembers all the sweet things that she said. All he remembers is that it was “violent,” in that it had such an extreme impact that she changed life as he knew it.

I think he’s making references to tantric sex all through the song:

“You breathe out and I breathe in” – Shared breathing is a common exercise in tantric sex.

”Get higher”- Reference to spirituality.

“Faith and desire”- Combining the ideas of spirituality and sexuality.

“I see angels and devils and god when you come… (on).” This is a reference to the tantric concept of a union between god and man during sexual climax.

“…when you come….on…..Hold on….hold on….hold on….ahhhhhhh.” This is a reference to an attempt at simultaneous orgasm, a common goal of practitioners of tantric sex.

“Ahhhhhhh….. Sing ‘sha la la la.’” Post-orgasmic bliss.

Honest yet exiting, where most artist require two separate songs to express such different emotions he is able to weave the two together rather beautifully because after all relationships are anything but a single emotion right?

this song perfectly describes the sensation of love.

the absolute most meaningful and highly true lyrics to this song are
"everything works, love, everything works in your arms.."

I always thought the last line was "everything works in your arms," rather than "heart." Maybe it's just me...

This song is obviously about missing someone, but I think he kinda of mellowed it out for the album. Check out an earlier version on youtube. I like both to be honest, this version has a little more heart but I like the overall sound more in the studio. The audio is pretty good but there are a couple of parts that are hard to distinguish it goes mostly like this....

This is the sound of my voice
Ticking loud in my head
This is the hollow reminder
Of all the words that you said
If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what's next
If I could make you believe
Make you forget

So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for
So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for

This is the sound of my noise
(?)
I've got a mouthful of all the wrong words
And all that you said

If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what's next
If I could make you believe
Make you forget

So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for
So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for
And the sound of your voice
This is the sound of my voice
Ticking loud in my head
This is the way that (?)
This is the sound of my voice
Ticking bomb in my head
This is the way that fills me up
If I could walk on water
If I could walk on water
If I could walk on you
If I could (?)
If I could (?)

So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for
So come on get higher
Light me on fire
Using your hips
And the sound of what
Your asking for
And the sweetest sound of your voice
Your voice
Your noise

I want to know what other people think of this version, heres the link......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFsSn9EOmM8

"if I could walk on water
if i could tell you what's next
make you believe
make you forget"

If he could show her in some grandiose fashion (such as walking on water) to make her believe they can work things out, he would do it. He wants to make her forget the bad times that led to the breakup and believe that they can work through them. Believe in him.

"I miss the sound of your voice
the loudest thing in my head
and I ache to remember
all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said"

It's been awhile since the breakup as evidenced by him having trouble remembering all the little details. He's trying hard to retain those memories. And in his rosy retrospection, even her "violent" words (the yelling, the bad) are tolerable. He misses it all.

"I miss the pull of your heart
I taste the sparks on your tongue
I see angels and devils and god when you come on
hold on..."

They have an undeniable chemistry together (sparks) and it was a deep, true and passionate love.

"come on get higher
come on and get higher
because everything works love
because everything works in your heart"

He is saying if it's real love, then they should be able to work it all out. Love supercedes all. Or it does in theory. It obviously hasn't here.

This is a great song to start a great album. Some Mad Hope is fantastic. I love it.

This song is about a girl he misses, obviously. And how fantastic it felt to be with her. She brought higher than he's ever been.

I think I have to agree with Magomra, this one is easily becoming my favorite Matt Nathanson song.

I don't think there's much to really grab at here. He misses the chick he was with and clearly misses the sex a lot.

One thing about Matt, he never shies away from talking about sex in his songs. That's definitely the case here. As blatant as you can be.

Just saw Matt last night at Hotel Cafe playing all new material and he introduced the song saying he can't go into the real meaning on the radio because the stations get fined, so he explains it as:

"Did you ever eat a bowl of ice cream that was just the best fucking ice cream you've ever eaten? And it's so good it makes your teeth hurt and you can't stop eating it and you just want to pull that ice cream's hair and slap its ass and really bruise it up and make it hurt a little bit. That's what this song's about. I think I just wrote an R. Kelly song."

This is my favorite Nathanson song. At first it seems like a simple "I miss you" song but there's a lot of religious imagery here that makes me wonder if he's getting at something regarding faith and spirituality.
