They're starting to open up the sky
They're starting to reach down through
And it feels like we're living in that split-second of a car crash
And time is slowing down
And if we only had a little more time
And this time is all there is

Do you remember the time we...
And all the times we...
And should have...
And were going to...
I know
And I know you remember
How we could justify it all
And we knew better
In our hearts, we knew better
And we told ourselves it didn't matter
And we chose to continue
And none of that matters anymore
In the hour of our twilight
And soon it will be all said and done
And we will all be back together as one
If we will continue at all

[Chorus:]
Shame on us
Doomed from the start
May God have mercy on our dirty little hearts
Shame on us
For all we've done
And all we ever were
Just zeros and ones

And you never get away
And you never get to take the easy way
And all of this is a consequence
Brought on by our own hand
If you believe in that sort of thing
And did you ever really find
When you closed your eyes
Any place that was still
And at peace?
And I guess I just wanted to tell you
As the light starts to fade
That you are the reason
That I am not afraid
And I guess I just wanted to mention
As the heavens will fall
We will be together soon if we
Will be anything at all

[Chorus]

Shame on us (Shame on us)
Doomed from the start
May God have mercy on our dirty little hearts
Shame on us (Shame on us)
For all we have done
And all we ever were
Just, just zeros and ones

General Comment:I think the idea behind this is the greed behind the zero sum game, in a zero sum game in order to succede someone else must fail. The moral of this song is that life is not a zero sum game, but because we have treated it as such we have dragged all of us down.

Yes this post is long but that's good! Take what you want and leave the rest. Or just SKIP IT like that counter on a ball that hooks around your ankle (remember those 90's toy commercials?)...

I'm not intending to outline the full meaning of these lyrics but I do feel a few points of resonance when I reflect on it:

The zero's and one's bring to mind the concept of the 'digital age/digital society' we now live in. Internet is now our primary seed of community and communication. Even our music and movies are just made of symbols now - there are no real sounds or pictures on the internet or even the 'movie' theaters.

When you actually picture that the whole 'world' that has built up on the net and over cell phones is really just made of two alternating digits you see how it has no real substance of it's own. It's not alive. it's not even mechanical. It's just a maze of symbols rushing through our minds.

The sky in a basic symbolic sense is the only plane that extends over every single part of the planet while still being part of it. You can talk all day about the vastness of the ocean, but nothing in the sea can access the world on land. Things of the sky can access any where.

The 'world wide web' is the first globally accessible 'place' in history. People are no longer forced to leave their homes to obtain information. They are no longer forced to compromise in what kinds of people they talk to or products they buy in person because you can conjure up the exact thing you think of online at any time.

Society is shifting and transforming because of this. Closed groups of people are sprouting up all over. When we were limited to physical sources of info (broadcasts, schools, clubs etc) it forced us to be open to others in those places because of how limited we were. We had to interact and hope that we'd discover something that would lead us in a positive direction. This forced interaction resulted in an extremely massive 'open door' physical world.

Rather than relate to the 'fuckedupness' of humanity interpretation I see the 'sky opening up'/heavens falling to feel like more of a vague but vast concern. We know about corruption in the general historical sense, but what exactly awaits us in this new age? The /open door/word on the streets/feeling it in the air/ world is over. We used to be able to feel the rhythm of what Big Government was doing from a distance even if we didn't have insider secret knowledge. Who knows now what the hell they are doing? At least before we could sense the gist of it all.

And so while the power of the net should be a blessing, I feel the car crash. The isolation and separation from ever really knowing what's going on in the world. With the net we are also learning massive amounts of history and all kinds of things that should have been common knowledge even before the net existed. We (or at least I!) feel like I had been duped in so many ways every time the society collectively did things a certain way while acting as if there was no alternative.

This is how I relate to the lines saying we should have done better. Even before I was using the net, as a child there were so many feelings I should have trusted but didn't. There were so many things I should have questioned but didn't.

For me the 'consequence by our own hand' is not the physical crime/poverty/propaganda govt/ because that has been around for millennia. This song is about an end and/or a new beginning, not the same old story. In my life the consequence is how much time I've wasted not living according to what was really most important. Zeroes hold no value at all, and one is the smallest concept you can possibly have.

All this time we've been working with zeroes and ones. Even after a billion permutations, what does it all add up to? How great do we really feel when we sum up everything we've done in this lifetime?

There is a vast world that did so many individual things that still doesn't add up to much. Rather than a strict interp of the phrase "zero sum" I think it's more of a motif. All that tug of war and petty yet violent drama that fits the zero sum game concept applies too I think. Like the whole 'sports' world. By design nothing is gained by sports as an institution (individuals yes but the whole does not gain). In the league Losses are equal and opposite to wins and ties = zeroes. Think how many millions of people spend millions of hours burning time on a high tech system that is just zero sum in the end.

My heart is dirty for all the crap I put up with. I'm also not afraid because I see how little the world is worth now. It's hard to fear losing something that is next to worthless (1 or 0)
Time is slowing down because life is speeding up.

This talk about being together after the transition speaks to me because it reminds me of why I was caught up in the rushing bullshit binary world in the first place. I was caught in the web. The web of everyone grabbing for something and me not knowing why.

You automatically feel the survival pressure to know why they all want it. You need to know, there could be an impending disaster or an amazingly good deal. And over the years I should have paid more attention to the quality of the people and not to their overwhelming numbers. I would have amounted to so much more by now without them.

General Comment:This song makes me very sad and disappointed. You always hear about all the bad things humanity is doing, and how its not too late, how we can make a difference if we do this, but no one ever does it. Its just in our nature; we really WERE doomed from the start. And at the eleventh hour, when we are finally punished, everyone realizes the shit we've been doing, or even the shit we HAVEN'T been doing, and we feel shame. We realize our mistakes, we feel remorse, we cry because the consequences are now right around the corner. But of course its too late for that, we're at God's mercy. Which is not much to hope for, because as he says "our dirty little hearts". Its like asking someone for forgiveness after you killed their family. We are all guilty. However, the narrator does leave a little hope, that possibly we have a better existence to look forward to. But you can't ever know for sure whether we'll be zeros or ones, but in the end, that's what each one of us added up to individually. We're all zeros and ones. It depends on how you lived your life I guess. But obviously, the overall sum wasn't good enough, considering 1) the apocalypse is here and 2) the name of the song is "Zero-Sum". Trent sure is a one. I'd like to think I'm a one too, but how can you really be sure. I guess I'll figure out when this actually happens to us. Man. We really are all guilty aren't we.

General Comment:I can't venture to guess what Trent was intending with this song. However, I am inspired by this song to create a character for whom this is his theme song. He dared to resist fascist forces during a war, and after the war, he and his family were captured by the fascist government, and his family was chemically brain-killed in front of his eyes, starting with his children. He and his wife were forced to watch as each of their children were destroyed (but not killed) in turn from youngest to oldest. After that was done, his wife was given the same drug. As the drug took hold, he and his wife exchanged looks for the last time, and I imagine this being the conversation that passed between them. She was doomed to have her mind destroyed, and they both knew he was doomed to watch it. How does anyone deal with such horror?

General Comment:Year Zero is a concept album about The US Government restarting History from Year Zero and treating the people like slaves and Shit (I bit like Half-Life 2). So Basically they was this war in the middle of the album so where and this is like the end of the war, be the good guys (us) are getting owned. And Trent Can't do anything, he is dying. He hopes that the people have enough will and Courage to fight and win against the government.

Obviously these friends are doing something so wrong they need to keep justifying it to each other even though they know better. They haven't had any consequences from it yet but are about to and they realize it. Their priorities are now changing due to circumstances beyond their control.

General Comment:I don't really know if this has anything to do with the song, but in this series I read (The Black Dagger Brotherhood) There's a club called Zero-Sum, and it talks about Nine Inch Nails playing a lot...lol

General Comment:My ex-boyfriend and good friend for several years took his life this past year.

"and I guess I just wanted to tell you/as the lights start to fade/that you are the reason/that I am not afraid"

He and I were doomed from the start.... if only we had more time.

    Hope you found peace, TTL.

General Comment:now I wonder, does The album, only this album, tell a story, from multiple perspectives, a story with a beginning, and the end, for the world, society, similarly compared to Fahrenheit 451, or another book, or just the perspective of one, and how HIS/HER world is ending, perhaps as mentioned, by some kind of revolution, or nuclear explosion? I could see it from both ways. If you use the latter option, could there be a sequel?
I just dont believe a that the world can end. Its impossible for something to just die, nukes or not, someone, something, somewhere, will go on so how...
