Lyrics for Illusion as interpreted by interface2x

Illusion Lyrics
I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand, Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you
Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim that
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, it doesn't matter anyway
A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, I'm still not sure
What I do know is, to use the world is different
As we are to the world but, I guess you would know that

Heh, first time talking about song lyrics.
To me, this song is about a friendship I'm in.
It's with a friend who has a physical 'disadvantage' similar to spina bifida, she was supposed to have died when she was five and has lived through more operations than she has years, being seventeen and having eighteen, I think, operations done to her. Most people that know us, seem to think we're in a relationship, but we're not, and I doubt we ever will be. We're more of a team, like Wallace and gromit.
But onto the point.
Then I started listening to this song, I couldn't stop. I found a connection between that song and the deeper conversations I've had with her. To me, it's not about love, it's about friendship and facing the aspect of losing it. The singer is clearly pleading with somebody, who may be considering taking their life (Yes, I'm stating the obvious) or maybe he is seeing a distance growing between them that he cannot make up for.
This song, to me, feels like the conversations I've had with this friend. Just the pure emotion in the wording, it doesn't make me want to cry, it gives me an overwhelming sense of kinship and it's almost like watching somebody cry and trying your best to restore them to their prior state and to keep them there.

I'm scared, constantly, that I'm going to lose my friend, but not in some dramatic way like suicide or anything. I'm scared that over time she'll replace me with somebody else, somebody better, so when I hear the line "Please don't go" it always brings thoughts about how I would live if she did decide to go.

Anyway, enough ranting.
If you read that, thanks.

I'm still young, but I've loved VNV Nation for several years now, and this one is my favorite of all of them.

As I am a fledgling writer, I like to listen for inspiration from my music. This song inspired me from the beginning to write a story. I haven't gotten too far yet, but I have faith in it and hope that people will like it as much as I do.

I only hope VNV Nation will continue to make more songs like this one. The world needs them.

It's about a relationship, weather it's Dating or just Friends, and one has a crappy life while the other understands. Basically the person who has the crappy life just doesn't understand how to handle a relationship because they have never felt it before because he could have been picked on, or bullied, while the other friend completely understands him/her and wants them to know that they care and love them and that they shouldn't care what other people think or say because as long as they have him/her they should be fine

it makes me feel hopeful of a brighter tomorrow. yet at that same instant, fearful of losing what i have had and never ever will be again.

it makes me think of who i am, and how i shouldnt ever change who i am for anything or anyone...

it makes me hate Mainstream Media and all its evil standards!

i cried to this song once... that in itself has an attachment.

it also has such broad strong lyrics that it can pertain to any meaning you want it to. if it impacts you even a bit his goal as an artist and musician was successful!

viva la VNV!

To me this song holds the meaning of all humanity. The lyrics tie us together in ways that are indescribable, and yet we all know how unique we each are. There are so many different meanings listed here, each one is personal and different.

"This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy, I truly understand, please don't cry now."

How often have any of us felt that way? Not happy, not sad...just like we are here and we are not good enough for some unexplainable reason. Deep down inside we all understand, and here is this song...telling us that we all understand each other. There is someone out there who wrote this song, and sang it, to all of us, to the world. Everyone that hears this song understands it in some special and unique way.

This song is happiness, and sadness, it causes people to cry tears of joy, tears of pain. It causes people to reflect on all their emotions, their lives, their friendships. It makes people think, not about themselves...but about everyone around them.

When I first heard this song one of the people I thought about was my late grandmother, it made me cry very hard. Then I thought about my friends who are described by these lyrics perfectly. Then I thought about my mother, and her whole life. I thought about relationships I've had, lost, am still in. I thought of so many people that eventually I felt like I was holding the world in my mind.

To me, this song brings me closer to all of you.

That's what it means to me. This world is a messed up place and if we aren't true to ourselves we lose ourselves in that mess. So much of us are filled with hate, anger, despair, rage, and depression. So many of us feel like we have no control over our own lives, or that no one understands us or no one cares. So many of us live inside our minds afraid of the world outside, and yet so many of us are unwilling to admit that very fact.

This song to me is love, pure and simple love. Not greed, not love of things or stuff or anything in particular...just love. The love we are supposed to feel for everyone and ourselves...regardless of our little flaws and imperfections, religious differences, racial differences, cultural differences, differences in morals and values...we're still supposed to love each other and not change ourselves for any reason.

they dedicated it to her, but they obviously didn't write it for her because she died in August 2007.

This song was written in memory of Sophia Lancaster. She and her boyfriend were brutally attacked in a skate park by a mob of stupid teenagers. When her boyfriend was knocked unconscience, Sophie cradled him in her arms to try to sheild him from the blows. She died later on in Fairfield hospital. The attack was not provoked by anything other than that the couple was "Gothic". This shows how messed up society is, that teenagers, little more than children with adults' bodies, are so desensitized and intolerant. VNV nations wrote this song for Sophie, though I don't dispute anyone who would like to inturpret otherwise.

I saw the video on YouTube, and I was FLOORED. A beautiful and haunting face looking @ a TV tube. She seems to be reaching, wishing, and longing for more, but is bound by the limitations of self. I wished I could tell the face how beautiful she is regardless of whether she wore makeup or not. Kinda silly, I know. I LOVE the song. The piano interlude @ the beginning is awesome.

This is a great song. I stumbled upon it mostly by accident.

Everyone has a desire to kind of fit in. Being kind of shy, lonely introvert, I've had this feeling a lot in my life, a kind of frustration to simply fit in like everyone else. It truly helps to have friends who encourage you to be yourself, like the narrator sings in this song.

This song is also so great to me because it's simple. There's no definite rhyme scheme or colorful language. It's just one simple man pouring out his heart with the best words he can.

This song lyrics make me so sad and happy at the same time, they're like an expression of my feelings said by someone else, it's strangely comfortable to know that he and I are passing through the same situation, but at the same time it reminds me that longevity will keep us away, it's like trying to clear your view from the illusion you are trying to believe yourself, it's like there's a part of us that wants to be together but it's not more than an illusion.
I really like VNV nation lyrics they have this kind of special element that makes me feel so comforted by reality and I find them always very adaptable to any context I'm into, I always find them really inspiring but always so depressive, this songs represents that merging of feelings very properly. -cries-laughs-

This song actually makes me cry. It means so much to me. It's almost as if they're singing to me in the sense that I do feel like I don't belong, and I am a bitter person because of how I've been hurt over the years. It makes me feel comforted that someone else I've never met knows how I feel and how to make me feel less alone. It also makes me feel vindicated in that I do feel spiritually Im on a different level, and that I see and understand things others don't. This makes me feel out of place often and like I can never open up or attach to anyone else.

It also makes me think of my first love, whom I lost five and a half years ago and still grieve over. What i wish I could've said, could've shown her. Thank you Ronan, for making me cry, for release, and for feeling loved and understood.

laurelinwyntre - did you copy and paste that from the Weltfunk forums? Someone posted almost the exact points a long time ago over there. Anyway....
Interestingly, "Worlds of Exile and Illusion" involves telepathic communication. How ironic. Although I don't think anyone other than a few people I know, see what I see in the song Ilusion...

"this world is just Illusion trying to change you"

Worlds of Exile and Illusion is also a science fiction written by  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursula_K._Le_Guin

Consider these other lines from the Judgement album in relation to Ursula's book titles:

The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia

"a place Dispossessed of any sanity"
Descent, VNV Nation

The Farthest Shore

"to reach The Farthest Star"
-The Farthest Star, VNV Nation

oh...Optimus6128...

I do think the "please don't go, I want you to stay" is referring to leaving *this* physical reality (which is illusion) in some other way, not suicide. I'm glad you came to consider this in your interpretation...I really like your insight posted here. I think you are very close to the true meaning...

laurelinwyntre - that is EXACTLY what I think is meant by the 'illusion' in this song.

I still think the second verse is the key to this song.

I don't think the person in the song wants to withdraw from reality. I think they experience reality in a different way than most people, and live in a reality that is different from most people - which makes them feel out of place just about everywhere they go. I don't mean another reality, as in some kind of delusional level, but more on a different spiritual level than the one most of us are used to Apparently Ronan relates to this person, as in 'to us the world is different, as we are to the world'. I think the person in this song was at a very desperate time in their life where there was really no one who could understand what they were going through, so this was his way of comforting them, as best as he could, while at the same time, making the lyrics so that other listeners could relate to them.
