Shrill as a choir of children
Urgent like the first day of May
False and inflatable feeling
Tugs at my senses, big as the Macy's Parade
One brick on top of another
Such is the measure of man
Planets are inset like diamonds
On a gravity halo, eternity's wedding band
I slept with that dealer all summer
The ecstasy is still in my spine
Coat check I couldn't remember
Walked into the winter, came out on the other side

And in the South the sun is shining
Back in the East the lights went out

Stuck on a ladder to heaven
On trial way back in the Hague
Lullaby sounds from the engine
In my Styrofoam coffin, asleep on the interstate
Black globes, old symbols of freedom
A murderer still on the lam
Cities encircled in iron
On a great silver beltway, democracy's shackled hands
Séance that brought us together
Objects we move with our minds
Coat check and I lost the number
Short sleeves in the winter, fell back through the other side

Out in the West the cars are crashing
Up in the North the ice gave out

Saada Tekmel be 'Lhouria
Houria

Memory:i love this song, and i actually did sleep with a dealer all summer. im back at school now, a two hour plane ride away, and whenever i hear this or people talk about him, that line instantly pops into my head. its a good and bad reminder. i really wanna say it outloud sometime

General Comment:I think the line "Lullaby sounds from the engine"
is some sort of reference to killing yourself, since you "put yourself to sleep" if you sit in a parked car in a closed space.
also, I'm from new orleans, where there are huge cemeteries called "cities of the dead". I think the line "Cities encircled in iron" might be a reference to cemeteries because almost all of the cities of the dead have big wrought iron gates surrounding them

General Comment:am i the only one who thinks he's saying "the ecstasy still in my smile" instead of spine?

either way, this song is absolutely incredible.

General Comment:I loove this song and anything Conor writes. I do miss the whole Bright Eyes thing. Loving the new stuff. But about the end....My mom's friend speaks arabic. (even tho it's a different version of arabic) And he said it means "happiness isn't complete without freedom."

General Comment:I think the urge to make his lyrics literal is understandable, but for the most part he deals in images and metaphors. I think the song does an excellent job of portraying a dreamlike sense of disconnectedness and chaos. Much like in a dream there are snippets from his personal life ("I slept with that dealer all summer", "In my styrofoam coffin, asleep on the interstate"), musings on spirituality or a lack thereof ("Stuck on a ladder to heaven, on trial way back in The Hague", "one brick on top of another, such is the measure of man"), thoughts about politics ("on a great silver beltway, democracy's shackled hand"), and host of other images. While I'm sure each lyric has meaning to him, I am not sure that he edits his writing enough to put together any kind of coherenet narrative.

    My Interpretation:About his "styrofoam coffin":
Styrofoam is pretty terrible for the enviroment: it takes an incredibly long time to degrade, is difficult to recycle, and it even contains a human carcinogen. If you take this into account, there are many different interpretations of a "styrofoam coffin."
I personally think it's a way of saying that one's impact (especially if it was negative) on the earth "lives" on even after he or she dies.

General Comment:i had forgotten to say, that the bass, kind of sounds like two heartbeats, a low one, then a high one perhaps of the mother and child.

General Comment:if it is about being in the womb like a comment on the first page said, then here's how it slightly connects.
a false feeling, because it'd be from the mother?
slept with the dealer all summer- inside the dealer's womb feeling the ecstasy of her drugs
    Lullaby sounds from the engine
In my styrofoam coffin, asleep on the interstate- styrofoam coffin is the womb, and the child's asleep in the middle of thigns

i'm not quite sure myself if it is about being in the womb, but we can guess. If so, i'd think its the child's experience in the womb, as well as it's opinion of the world like what you guys said about democracy and all the things happening to the world. Like the child's view on mankind is the rest of the lyrics that don't fit with the womb references. (i only read the comments from the first two pages though)
