The wife forgave the mistress
For she only entertained
The pain was gone the instant
She cleared her throat to speak her name
Said, Both of us must suffer
From this same unending ache?

The world was not of interest
Though her days were never dull
Her bed beneath a crucifix
On guests performing miracles
With the Son of God just hanging like a common criminal
"When I do wrong, I am with God," she thought
"When I feel lost, I am not at all"

So give me black light
(Give, give me)
So give me hot knives
(Deep clean sleep)
On a dance floor no one tells time
(There is no time)

Oh, I've made love, yeah, I've been fucked, so what?
I'm a cartoon, you're a full moon, let's stay up

She went to see a mystic
Who made medicine from rain
And gave up her existence
To feel everything, dream other's dreams
Bid farewell to her family
With one ecstatic wave
(Please take care, I love you all)
Out the window as the car rolled away
She just vanished into a thick mist of change

So let us rejoice
(Let's rejoice!)
In all this pink noise
(Our pink noise!)
An oscillation that we can pinpoint
(We're right here!)

General Comment:His ability to induce the most complex and rewarding epiphanies in the fewest of words is uncanny and inspiring. You can dissect certain lines, a few words, even, and extrapolate incredibly profound and humanistic philosophies in which man has struggled dealing with and understanding for a long time. Yet, he has that ability. Some of his lines, when solely pondered upon and digested, just ascend to a whole other playing field of "aha" moments and realizations. My favorite line of the song: "So let us rejoice, in all this pink noise. An oscillation that we can pinpoint". This could be one of the most comforting lines ever constructed in a song. People forget that the world does not revolve around them, that the drama they experience in their own lives, their fabricated hardships, ultimately just adds to the pink noise that is the sum of our simultaneous existence. "Sonder" is a good word to help describe this. We get caught up in the drama act that is, essentially, our lives, and when one takes the time to step back from it and actually understand it for what it really is, its' incredibly, as I said before, comforting. Disasters don't exist. The daily troubles and experiences of each and every individual is a fabrication of their own reality, which in itself is a fabrication of actual reality. These seemingly separate experiences collect ,condense and formulate into that beautifully meaningless cloud of static; pink noise.

General Comment:The first verse is about infidelity, the second is about sexual promiscuity, and the third is about drug use. Like a lot of Conner’s songs, the verses are independent stories but have a common thread. In this song, the common thread is people’s need to escape the grind of life through some kind of vice.

    That’s what I think anyway.

General Comment:Just some thoughts about the last verse. Pink noise is a similar to white noise, except that the power is inversely proportional to the frequency. He uses it as a double meaning. One pink noise is used to drown out other sounds, so i'm assuming to drown out the noise of life or troubles. but why use pink noise when white noise works just as well? My thought is that since pink noise can occur naturally, for example a heart beat rhythms or brain neural activities that maybe hes talking about rejoicing in the sound of their heartbeats or maybe their thoughts, which can drown out the world. But with the last line he says "an oscillation we can pinpoint" maybe talking again about how you can pinpoint your heartbeat (which oscillates) while listening to it.

I think this whole thing is about escape. as others have pointed out

The pain was gone the instant
She cleared her throat to speak her name
Said, Both of us must suffer
From this same unending ache" the husband died and the wife is forgiving the mistress because there's nothing to be mad about anymore. The wife and mistress both loved the husband so they are both suffering from the unending ache of his death. That's what I got from it especially after reading some of the comments and others
Interpretations. I love this song and it means more than a wife losing her husband and starting a new life: to me its an eye opener and makes me want to change my life and the pain in it that's not worth surffering over lifes too short

General Comment:well, you all know that hotknives is a method of smoking various kinds of drugs, usually a pretty jonesy way of doing it, too... I mean not as high-class as a wizard bong or anything ^_^ It's usually done when butter knives and broken bottles are the only implements to be had.
Says a lot about the lady(ies) and/or man.

    Song Meaning:I'm a cartoon, you're a full moon, let's stay up.

    I think it refers to...
well, this might not make sense
but...he is referring to himself as a late night cartoon show
(because i know cartoons stay on pretty late now a days)

and the other person, man or woman (probably woman)
is a full moon because, well...full moons or just the moon
in general stays up late as well.

    so he's saying...
let's stay up together before you
    leave me or something....

this is just the 1st thing that
came to mind when i was listening to this song

i get on this site all the time to look up song meanings
