The theme of the song West Coast is best expressed as losing a loved one is never easy. Both stanzas one and two suggest this loved one was lost by saying “I talk out loud like your still around.” and “I miss you, I’m going back home to the west coast.” In the chorus, the narrator says how much they would wish for this loved one to come with them to the west coast. The songs lyrical tone feels somewhat disheartening, although the musical tone differs. For instance, stanza four suggests that this person is not yet dead by saying “if you shake her harder she will appear.” I interpreted this to signify that the person is around physically, but not mentally. At that specific point, the lyrical tone seems even more dispiriting. This is because sometimes knowing you could still spend time with a loved one, but instead having to leave them, can be even more hurtful then fatality. For example, each time you take a glimpse at this person, emotions seem to run right back. I never would have thought that Jason Schwartzman would put out music, but he did and I love it! It is calm in a fun way (if that makes sense). This is my favorite of the songs because I absolutley love the West Coast! I think that this song is pretty straight forward though. He has been away from his home and his girlfriend for a really long time (probably filming a movie) and is ready to go home, he is preparing to go back into her arms. And then the song transfers a little bit to when he is home and is getting ready to leave which is why he wrote, "I wish you woulda put yourself in my suitcase" The simplicity of the song is what makes it so amazing, I sing it all day long!
