Lyrics for Chocolate Girl as interpreted by heyheyhey111

Chocolate Girl Lyrics
In cycle,
I leave you around the ocean,
Where grass grows,
And remnants of you is emotion,
My breath's out,
Inhaling upon trees frozen,
We look out
And chase around our house with the chosen,
And holding,
Quietly,
The sound is dead,
Sing and turn,
In light,
And life meets child your only plight
is light,
And silly smiles, you'll sleep a while
in light,
I'll take you for walks in the ocean,

She had a pretty dad,
But she was growing out of play-school,
So she could kick and scream and play,
Until she wanted to,
My little chocolate girl,
Her brother barely out of high school,
There was a place where he could sleep,
Until he wanted to,
Our frozen, tiny cow,
And she could bury him in apples,
And curl around a bowl of cotton until she wanted to
Until she wanted to,

Still she had to speak loud,
Because hearing is an iron offense,
And quietly
Still drinking with the bones and the dead,
And play small,
In hopes of something better to show her,

The sound is dead,
It's singing time,
In light,
When light meets child
You're sleeping wild in light,
I'll take you for walks on the ocean,

She met a pretty boy,
And they would dance between their elders,
Where she would cream until the wine she bought had settled in,
My little chocolate girl,
She used to love the stars of England,
She sold them records in her home by the jury from her school,
Her colors matched the room,
And she would swirl around the curtains,
She had a hand to hold her chin up,
When her friends walked out,
The kid across the street,
He'll keep around when she was changing,
And he would wait until she told her friends about the boy,
Her Mom and Dad at home,
She has saliva in her pockets,
She gave a girl when her last graves have finally digged the day

So did the chocolate girl,

Put your lanterns all across the maze,
So I won't feast on fallen,
Bitter rain who brought the stings and dead,
And who will part the train,
Cause I can't see you,
I'll open up my brain again,
(repeat)

Either you are paying tons of money.
Have a really really good hook up
or are buying the second pressing.
Considering Spirit theyve gone was originally like what five hundred or less prints

i thought i posted this comment in this song already.. but i played this song for a girl and it was the first animal collective song she loved.. she kept asking me to play it over and over and in the end i gave her the nickname chocolate girl.

i have a theory after
"Still she had to speak loud" since there was a line missing i thought i'd try. and what i heard ended up altering my opinion with a different take on the next few lines as well.. enjoy or discard.

cause hearing isn't higher then rhythm
and meets him and picks her sunday flowers in the autumn
and quietly still drinking with the boys and their friend
and prays long in hopes of something better to show them
and holding tightly
and the sound is dead.... etc

well thats it. i guess the sunday flowers supports the praying line. who knows. lyrics can be tough.. glad there are so many contributing!!

Someone posted my lyrics and Avey said they were far off... but he didn't want to give them to us because it would spoil the mystique. Makes sense, I guess. I doubt they are brilliant. Their hidden aspects make the song better.

A guy gave me a mix CD of songs awhile ago and this song was the opener or a range of cryptic songs arranged as a type of message. I still puzzle over this song, it's quite cute.

perhaps the end of the song goes like this:

put your little daughter 'cross the knees
so i won't feast and follow
better love the rain who brought the stings ended
and who will pop the triggers
i can't see you
i'll open up my brain again

These lyrics seem completely wrong to me.
I have the lyrics I think are closer but I'm not sure if I should post them.
Anyway, this song is so dreamlike. I think it's about the singer falling in love with a girl he met in a dream. She's chocolate girl because when he woke up she just sort of melted away and the only thing left is a sweet aftertaste.

The lyrics seem terribly off to some of you because AC made a mistake on the original pressing when they skipped Track 3 "Untitled" on the song listing on the back, accidentally naming it "Penny Dreadfuls". If you have an early version of the album, chances are "Chocolate Girl" is actually "Everyone Whistling", the track right after it.

He definitely says, "I'll take you for walks among the patients."
Not, "I'll take you for walks in the ocean."

Also, it's, "Our fuzzy tabby cat," and not, "our frozen tiny cow."

A lot of this song remains a mystery, but those lines I'm sure of.

The "who will part the train" part, sounds like "who will I portray" to me.

I think this song is about a father watching his daughter grow up and fall in love, where he's finding it difficult to keep himself out of her life so she can figure things out for herself. I feel like he misses the days when he used to be able to hold her hand and teach her things as they went, and he still wants to let her know that he loves her and is there for her if she needs help. She can turn to her father for help instead of her girlfriends or someone untrustworthy.

That's just my interpretation though.

Animal Collective sounds really blithe when you listen to it, but you'd never know looking at some of the lyrics.

It seems clear there are no fixed lyrics to this song. It's evolved tremendously over the years, and even since the 2008 performances, the general tones, sound and lyrics have changed (and improved). The version they’ve been playing throughout 2009 is stunning: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=103811402 I recommend listening to it over all others.

The indiscernible and sometimes obtuse lyrics make it difficult to ascribe song meaning. But it seems that the song is about watching a girl, whether a friend, sister, daughter, etc., grow and fall in love. The relationship with the girl seems platonic, mainly considering how elated Avey Tare sounds when he sings “She met a pretty boy!” And I love the lyric about the chocolate girls' relationship with that boy: "he kept around while was changing/ she would think that he woudl tell his friends about the girl!"

I love how the lyrics merge the mundane with the nonsensical; it adds to the incredible charm. (“She met a pretty boy/ and they would twirl around the curtains/ and she would cream until the wine she bought had settled in”).

In short, I see this as a peculiar, platonic love song.
