Brian
Top marks for not trying
So kind of you to bless us
With your effortlessness
We're grateful, so strangely comforted

And I wonder
Are you putting us under
'Cause we can't take our eyes
Off the t-shirt and ties combination?
Well, see you later, innovator

Some want to kiss, some want to kick you
There's not a net you couldn't slip through
Or at least that's the impression I get
'Cause you're smooth, and you're wet
And she's not aware yet
But she's yours

She'll be saying, use me
Show me the jacuzzi
I imagine that it's there, on a plate
You're whole rendezvous rate
Means that you'll never be frightened
To make them wait for a while
I doubt it's your style
Not to get what you set
Out to acquire the eyes are on fire
You are the unforecasted storm
Hup

Calm, collected and commanding
(Top marks for not trying)
You leave the other stories standing
With your renditions and jokes
Bet there's hundreds of blokes
That have wept 'cause you've stolen their

Thunder
Are you putting us under
'Cause we can't take our eyes
Off the t-shirt and ties combination

Well, see you later, innovator

Song Meaning:I feel like there isn't much sarcasm in the song, not sarcasm but legitimate awe. I think the band were a little surprised with Brians presence, perhaps even a bit jealous. However they felt like he was a little too easy to hate, and with reason, since apparently it seemed like this Brian could steal some of their "Thunder".

My Interpretation:I think this song was meant to be very sarcastic. It is kind of saying, "Yeah Brian, you're so cool because you get so many woman with your edgy look."

He references the t shirt and tie as the "cool new look" which represents today's "scene" crowd. The singer is basically saying, "yeah you're cool, we get it. YOU'RE SOOOOOO ORIGINAL."

General Comment:This is my favorite AM song! This song would always get me so energized. I think this song is about a guy named Brian who uses woman for his own personal gain. But hey that's my opinion.I can sort of relate to the song a bit.:3

    Also as for the article:
"When asked to say a little about the song's protagonist, Alex Turner replied, "I can't remember Brian now... I don't know if he were in my imagination or what... it's a blank spot in my brain... I think that's what he [Brian] wanted."[6] He later explained in NME that Brian had been a guy that they had met backstage in the band's dressing room at a gig at Studio Coast "Ageha" in Tokyo Japan, and that "When he left the room, we were a bit in awe of his presence. So we did a brainstorm for what he was like, drew a little picture and wrote things about him," while guitarist Jamie Cook added "He was right smooth, very LA. He just appeared with like a business card and like a round neck T-shirt and a tie loosely around it, I'd never seen that before. It felt like he was trying to get inside your mind. We were checking out his attire; it inspired us.""

General Comment:lol for some reason,I sense sarcasm in this song. I like to think that he's actually making fun of the Brian guy. Particularly with the 'see ya later, innovator!' bit.

Love this song. Absolute genius <3

General Comment:Brian is my business partner in Japan. Not suprised he hasn't posted a comment. A big AM fan who casually mentioned whilst having a burger in Tokyo that he met the band with his wife and son back stage and passed me the pic with the family and the band. Did laugh with the shirt, tie combo. He is a smooth cat and a great friend. Super song by the way!

General Comment:This song is used as the soundtrack for the review of the 3d week of the tour de france 2008. You can watch the review at:

There, they clearly used it as one big reference to dope. It's inspired on the first verse:

    Brian
    Top marks for not trying
So kind of you to bless us
    With your effortlessness
    We're grateful so strangely comforted

The less effort, the less attacks, the less we fear that one of the cyclists will be caught for dope. 'we're strangely comforted'. It's a 'blessing' for cyclisme, because cyclisme wins back the trust of the viewer.

It's a great use of the song, and i will néver forget this great bound between the marvelous song and the great video.

General Comment:they said it's about a guy they met after one of their gigs. Apparently he made them feel wired and after he left they wrote down things about them. Alex turner said the lyrics are just them guessing what he think he's like.

General Comment:I love totally Arctic Monkeys, I think they are just awesome.
I love this song, it was their first one I found out.
505 and Teddy Picker are also damn great, but this one is special.

It doesn't matter what the lyrics mean (it does, but not as much as you think). It doesn't matter if it is "lacking" or "dripping" (talking about fluorescent adolescent, whick also I like pretty much); the message of the song is there and it matters, not one or two words.

    kiss.
