I want in like a substitute
I've been working awful hard for you
But you don't say, you just hold your breath
So I can't touch what I haven't yet
She's a cold one and it hurts me so
And it's a dark path and a heck of a cold
And she can feel me just like she did before

Oh we'd be so free
Happy alone
Sharing a smile
So far from home

Push in and I pull it away
It's a hard part but the true love way
Girl you want it like I want it now
With your smart mouth and your killer hands
We could both share all that I have made
For a young man it's a heck of a wage
And I feel crazy when I see your face

Oh oh oh oh ho oh

'Cause we'd be so free
Happy alone
Sharing a smile
So far from home
And we would laugh
Laugh till we cried
Making a song
Making a lie

And people say I'm crazy for walking this town
And people say I'm bigger for walking this town
And people say maybe they're just wandering around
And people say I'm bigger for walking a'

And we'd be so free
So happy alone
Sharing a smile
So far from home
And we would laugh
Laugh till we cried
Making a song
Making a lie
Happy alone

Lyric Correction:Why are the lyrics ALWAYS WRONG on songmeanings.net And they're not just a little bit wrong, it's like every other line is wrong, and the song is so distorted it doesn't even make sense. I have yet to read a lyric on this site that is 100% correct, not even 80% correct... the best you can hope for is maybe 75% correct lyrics.... I just don't understand....

General Comment:Sorry to be a Johnny-come-lately to this but it's:

    Pushin' and a-pullin'
    Waiting's the hard part
    But the true love way.

    Now it makes sense, yes?

General Comment:I think some people are way off. The song is really simply talking about being a rock 'n roll star and slut and lying to girls the few girls you are appealing to you because they won't sleep with you to do so.

First verse he talks about some girl he wants and can't get.

Chorus is the things he'd say to get her into bed. And it carries on the same pattern.

And then he kicks it home after the second chorus "You making me lie."

Listen and think about it in this context and it's quit simple.

General Comment:I think its about a past relationship that went wrong due to timing. He wasn't in the place he wanted to be. No that the timing is right he feels, she won't give him another chance. Thats the way I see it.

"I've been working awful hard for you
But you dont say, you just hold your breath
So I cant touch what I havent yet
Shes a cold one and it hurts me so
It's a dark path and a heck of a toll
She could kill me just like she did before"

General Comment:I think it's a possibility he could be referencing to the same girl from "Milk" when he says, "She could kill me just like she did before." He says, "Kill me," repetively in that song when he found out the shitty truth.

General Comment:I'm almost positive galalorien has it right on. This song is about a guy wanting to have sex with his girl who his still a virgin. There's a slogan in christian circles to keep young kids away from sex, with the slogan "True Love Waits." And we all know of the Followill's christian background and their songs about sex. It could be the same girl from the song "Happy Alone." But the guy is willing to go the love route in order to get with her sexually, going for the "true love way."

General Comment:I just got introduced to this song and I love it. I don't think this song is about sex/affair at all. As others have mentioned, it's about wanting to be with someone who simply doesn’t feel the same for you. Or maybe you’re already with this person in a sense but she’s not giving you her all. “Pushing and pullin weight” is about each person doing their part in the relationship but yeah, sometimes it’s hard to do as sometimes it’s easier to shut down and ignore problems, hoping they will pass…no relationship is perfect and each one takes effort from both sides to maintain and yeah, it can be hard but if you’re committed it’s the “true love way.” Great song.

General Comment: I misheard the lines as "with the bullshit, all that I have made, for your man, it's a heck of a wage." Always thought this song was about an affair.
