If I find my way through the darkest of days,
Will I laugh about the things that kept me awake?
But if my greatest fear paints itself so crystal clear,
Will I run away or will I hide?
And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night.
And curse the moon so dull and bright,
My heavy soul can't stand the light.
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones
In the desert sun I watched my nerves come undone.
One by one my strings they tangled into knots.
And ever since that day, deep in Santa Fe.
I've learned to hate myself for giving everything away.
And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night.
And curse the moon so dull and bright,
My heavy soul can't stand the light.
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones
And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night.
And curse the moon so dull and bright,
My heavy soul can't stand the light.
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones

the end. :p
"If I don't come home tonight
Just know I tried my best to fight
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night"
Like that could be about him fighting the war and him telling his wife or family that he tried his best to fight. I could be wrong, but I like to think of it this way.
Will I laugh about the things that kept me awake?"
The singer is going through a difficult time obviously -
from the tone of the song, it's safe to say a
failing relationship is to blame. He has a lot
on his mind, most-likely over-analyzing things,
Asking “what if” questions, searching for vain
Answers to questions that may not even need to be asked.
"But if my greatest fear paints itself so crystal clear,
Will I run away or will I hide?"
Something seems to stand out in his mind as the cause
of everything and only adds to the confusion. He's
afraid that the truth will be realized and, unfortunately,
match what he's thought all along - she's seeing someone
else, whether it be an ex, new fling.. we're left to guess.
When that happens, he's not sure how he will react.
"And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night"
At this point, he's letting her know that if
they are no longer together, he did his best
to save what they had. The third line hints
that he plans to keep trying despite what happens,
though it will most-likely be a wasted effort.
"And curse the moon so dull and bright,
My heavy soul can't stand the light.
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones"
The moon is most-likely the girl - he can only
think about the good times, the reasons he likes
her which results in his heavy soul - he's going
to miss her and all of the oddities and experiences
they shared. Burning straight to the bones is another
way of saying he has deep regret and will miss her.
"In the desert sun I watched my nerves come undone.
One by one my strings they tangled into knots."
The desert sun implies loneliness since there is nothing
to be found in such a barren place. This girl was probably
his best friend, in addition to his lover. They probably
shared everything with each other, save for the parts that
were their undoing, which were most likely on her end. Tangled
strings is most likely referring to his stomach and the
feeling someone gets when someone they care for is pulled away.
"And ever since that day, deep in Santa Fe.
I've learned to hate myself for giving everything away."
The location is negligible - it sounds like he cut things off to
save himself further heartache, or he risked prolonging it by
staying/pursuing her; however, the chorus that follows once again
and is reiterated at the end implies that he will continue to
pursue her, even if it's not directly.
This song is melancholy, both in beat and verse. It makes one think about past times
as most people go through something like this at some point in their lives. When a
relationship reaches a certain point, it's best if the hurting person lets go - it
will ease the pain, though it may be a lot at first, it will gradually fade. In the
meantime, the other person can see what the "new" (possibly new, possibly an ex)
interest yields and probably forget about the singer. It can go many ways from here,
from the two never speaking again to the girl realizing she made a mistake - only time will tell

Anywho, I definitely agree with whoever said it was easier to take it as a general idea and not try to nail down every phrase. Overall, I think this is about a relationship that has had problems, but now they're facing something really big and it's seems to be affecting this guy pretty profoundly.
I think they've been trying to figure their problem out for a while and where it says
"And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night."
He's telling her that if they can't get something figured out tonight, to know that he's trying and that he doesn't plan to loose their entire relationship.
There. No suicide:)
"If I find my way through the darkest of days,
Will I laugh about the things that kept me awake?"
When he come back to her && sees her again, will he find it silly he was ever afraid of loving her in the first place.
"But if my greatest fear paints itself so crystal clear,
Will I run away or will I hide?"
If when he sees her, his fear is greater than before, will he run away from her && end up hurting them both.
"And if I don't come home tonight,
Just know I tried my best to fight.
Please don't think I plan to lose to the night."
If he doesn't see her, he tried hard to fight his fear && if he can't do it, please don't be mad at him.
"And curse the moon so dull and bright,
My heavy soul can't stand the light.
It burns me straight to the bones, my bones"
The moon is love. It's right there, he has to face it. The pure power of it overwelms him.
"In the desert sun I watched my nerves come undone.
One by one my strings they tangled into knots.
And ever since that day, deep in Santa Fe.
I've learned to hate myself for giving everything away."
He's left && has began to regret it somewhere along his trip. He thinks it's possible love could be the best thing to ever happen to him.
This song is amazing.
I would love to know what happened after he saw the girl.
"ive learned to hate myself for giving everything away"
and with the moon, as someone said, it reminds him of his missing happiness, his heavy heart cant take it.
beautiful song, really sad. ahhh i love this band.
