A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

Juliet says hey it's romeo you nearly gave me a heart attack
He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shoudn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong juliet?

Come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as I was just another one of your deals?

Well you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say oh romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie I'd do the stars with you any time

Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above Ill love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?

A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

General Comment:Just another one of my Husband's "memory songs". He screwed around with an old slapper 30 odd years ago, and managed to fall in love with 'it'.
She dumped him, and he ended up back with me, and we've been together ever since. He thinks I don't know about his "memory songs" and how much she meant to him, but I do, and unfortunately I discovered them all too late. I could have found MY soulmate, but I stuck around with a guy who has never really wanted me, or loved me like he loved HER. I guess I will always be 2nd best!!

My Interpretation:I seriously created an account because I wanted to share my interpretation of this specific song. I see a movie in my head when I listen to it. Enjoy seeing it my way. :)

"A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade, laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made. Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade, says something like you and me babe how about it?"

A man is in love with a woman from his home. He's been away but has returned for her. He's been low key until he sees her but once he sees her, he excitedly shouts declarations of his love for her through their hometown streets.

"Juliet says, 'Hey it's Romeo. You nearly gave me a heart attack!' He's underneath the window, she's singing 'Hey la, my boyfriend's back. You shoudn't come around here singing up at people like that.
Anyway what you gonna do about it?"

She pretends to be startled but unimpressed by his public declarations of love for her which indicates that when he left, they were secret lovers and he left against her wishes. She felt jilted and like he was ashamed to let anyone know he had been with her because he just disappeared without ever declaring his love for her before so asks him what he intends to do this time, as if to say, "Are you just gonna leave me again?"

"Juliet the dice were loaded from the start and I bet and you exploded in my heart, and I forget, I forget the movie song. When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?"

He tells her that the odds were against them becoming a couple to begin with, which indicates they are from different class systems. Maybe he's a poor boy and she's a rich girl that he unexpectedly fell in love with but he knew it was fate. He felt such deep love for her while they were together that he wanted to be worthy of her so he left and the feelings only grew stronger while they were apart. They shared special memories and though he can't remember exact details anymore, he hopes she will forgive him and understand that he had to go away in order to grow into this man and he's proud of the love they shared.

"Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame, both dirty, both mean yes and the dream was just the same 'And I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real. How can you look at me as I was just another one of your deals?'"

He reminds her that they came from different worlds and both of them were ashamed of where they came from because their lifestyles were "dirty" and "mean" in their own way but they shared the same dream to rise above their backgrounds so he went away to become the man he wanted to be, someone he is proud of and someone who is worthy of her so she could be proud of their love. He's hurt that she acts like he's no one special.

"Well you can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold, you can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold. You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, now you just say "Oh Romeo? Yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him."

He tells her that she can pretend she is in love with men who are clearly not worthy of her yet denies him her love when he has earned it. He reminds her that she promised him she would always be in love with him. He's shocked she acts like he's no one special.

"Juliet when we made love you used to cry, you said I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die. There's a place for us, you know the movie song. When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?"

He reminds her that they used to be intensely in love and, again, that she promised she would always love him. He tells her he knows she remembers being intensely in love with him but is angry and hurt that he left. He pleads with her to please understand and forgive him.

"And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be, all I do is keep the beat and the bad company, all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme. Juliet I'd do the stars with you any time."

He tells her that he misses her and wants to be in love with her again, that all he does is try to keep going despite the bad company he's had. He tells her he's been motivated and inspired by his love for her, his actions prove it and that he'd spend forever with her if she'll let him.

"Juliet when we made love you used to cry; you said I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die. There's a place for us, you know the movie song. When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?"

He reminds her again that they were intensely in love, promises he'll always love her until he dies (alluding he wants to marry her) and pleads for her to understand and forgive him again.

"A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade, laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made.
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade, says something like "You and me babe, how about it?"

Humbled by her resistance, he tries again, softly declares his love and asks her if they be together again.

The song ends leaving the listener to wonder if she took him back or not.

Hope you enjoyed my thoughts. Thanks for reading. :)

General Comment:I'm reading comments saying nobody is saying what the song is about. But I don't really want to read 3 pages of comments and check if that's true.

ANYWAY...the meaning of the song can be found in the Dire Straits section.
Every person that commented the song there gave interperetations, so go to the Dire Straits and find the song there.

General Comment:Most of this song is referring to the play, it's not quite accurate, but it does include a lot of points that people have overlooked.

This part is referring to the play, where, after the party where Romeo and Juliet meet, he wanders around the town thinking of her, until he ends up in her back yard and hears her proclaim her love for him. He then tries to convince her that he loves her back, but she won't hear it, because she is worried he might be taking advantage of the fact that he knows she loves him. The "anyway what you gonna do about it?" refers to Juliet telling Romeo that if his intentions are pure and he wants to get married, he should tell her servant the next day:
"A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

Juliet says hey it's romeo you nearly gave me a heart attack
He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shoudn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?"

In the play, Romeo focuses a lot on fate and the stars and the heavens. Betting on dice is all chance, and that is how Romeo looks at his life. The movie song refers to the song "there's a place for us," which it says later in the song. The time was wrong because the day of Romeo and Juliet's marriage, Romeo gets in trouble with the Prince and is banished, so they can't be together.
"Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong juliet?"

Romeo comes from the house of Montague, and Juliet comes from the house of Capulet. These houses are both alike in dignity, which in the play means they were both rich and in this song means that they were both mean for hating each other:
"Come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as I was just another one of your deals?"

The chains of silver and gold refer to Juliet becoming engaged to the County Paris, after Romeo was banished. You can fall for pretty strangers is Romeo contemplating how he fell for Juliet, she promised him everything, but now she thinks nothing of it:
"Well you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say oh romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him"

This is where you know that the movie song is referring to "there's a place for us". it goes back to the empty promises and the bad timing:
"Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?"

Romeo realizes that he isn't perfect, that he's not the best, and he doesn't think he's good enough for Juliet but that doesn't matter because the one thing he's good at is loving her. He kisses her through the bars of orion because they could only see each other at night, under the stars. Also, the play Romeo and Juliet is based on a play called Pyramus and Thisbe. In this play, Pyramus and Thisbe can only talk through a hole in their wall, they kiss each other through the wall, and curse it for keeping them away from each other; it's like a cage. The bars of orion are like the cage that keeps Romeo and Juliet from being together in public, under the stars is the only way they can see each other, but its not ideal:
"I can't do the talks, like the talk on TV
And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be.
I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you.
I can't do anything, except be in love with you!
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion
Juliet I'd do the stars with you any time"

Same thing, reminiscing, remembering broken promises, bad timing:
"Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above Ill love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?"

At the end of the play, Juliet pretends to kill herself, so she can run away and be with Romeo, but Romeo thinks she's died for real. He goes back to where she is in a tomb, which is sort of like a mausoleum; its not underground. He's sneaking around, because he's not supposed to be there, steps into the tomb and proclaims his love for her, while killing himself:
"A lovestruck romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?"

General Comment:The Killers version is great, but the Dire Straits version is better. You have to give credit to the guy who wrote it. The Killers didn't change it all, which is a good thing.
