Lyrics for Dismantle.Repair. as interpreted by eltroyo11

Dismantle.Repair. Lyrics
One last glance from a taxicab
Images scar my mind
Four weeks felt like years
Since your full attention was all mine
The night was young and so were we
Talked about life, God, death, and your family
Didn't want any promises
Just my undivided honesty
And say oh, woah
Things are gonna change now
For the better
And woah, oh
Things are gonna change
Oh, they're gonna change
I am the patron saint of lost causes
A fraction of who I once believed
(Change)
Only a matter of time
Opinions I will try and rewrite
If life had background music
Playing your song
I've got to be honest, I tried to escape you
But the orchestra plays on
And sing oh, woah
Things are gonna change now
For the better
And woah, oh
Things are gonna change

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Give me time to prove
Prove I want the rest of yours
(Prelude)
Call this a prelude to a lifetime of you
It's not that I hang on every word
I hang myself on what you repeat
It's not that I keep hanging on
I'm never letting go

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Save me from myself
Save me from myself
Help me
Save me from myself
Save me from myself
Oh, woah
Things are gonna change now
For the better
And woah, oh
Things are gonna change

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me

It's "talked about life, God, death, and your family." The lyrics are on MySpace.com/anberlin

"I am the patron saint of lost causes" and the "Give me time to prove..." verse. excellent! I can't wait for the rest of cities.

There's something about this song that I really relate to. Maybe it's just my interpretation though... Being completely honest with someone, and that person figuring you out for who you are. Feeling like you're moving in the right direction, only to feel completely lost four weeks later. Trying to escape the feeling, but holding on out of sheer hope... I love it.

I always like Anberlin's music the first three or four times through.. and then it gets stale. Hopefully the new album will be different. This song, however, sounds pretty similar to their previous release. Though I've been on a more poppy kick lately, so I like this.

I agree with you completely on some songs. However, it's hard to deny that Stephen Christian is one of the best songwriters in this scene. And I do think Cities will break their trend of writing albums that are great for a week and dead for a week, then come back the week after that. Judging by the first two songs, it definitely will be better than the last 2 records.

in reply to the last two posts...i understand what you're saying, i've felt that way about other bands, just not anberlin. I love these guys and have seen them live countless times. They put on the best shows. However, it's your right to feel how you want, so thats cool with me.

But yes, the first two songs (godspeed being the other) are unbelievable. This song i think is about a new love in his life. Something was not alright at first, idk what, but things are gonna get alot better now they're together. Alot like me and my girlfriend now. We had to go through some rough things to begin our relationship because one of my best friends had feelings for her. And i had to talk to him and tell him about the unbelievable connection she and i had. it sucked, he was mad. but "things are gonna change for the better" she assured me.

I love this song so much (does my username say it all?)
I agree with what's been said, but I see this song fitting into so many situations.

1) A relationship, but she wasn't happy with it for some reason, probably because he was selfish since he says "Save me from myself", and she told him this "your words cut me through", and so she said "things are gonna change" meaning that she'll leave. but he's "never letting go" because he truly loves her, and her words broke him down, and now he's going to change because he loves her.

2) Or basically, the relationship is abusive, but he loves her too much to completely let go, and thus he feels broken, but things are going to change because he so broke the only thing left to do is repair.

3) Relating it to stuff I'm going through now with a friend: he gave her everything he had ("undivided honesty"), but she never truly cared ("lost causes"), and he knew this would happen, so he tried to avoid falling for her but he fell in love anyway ("i tried to avoid you but the orchestra plays on"), and though he gives her so much care, she gives him nothing but selfish or shallow or ungrateful words, which "dismantle" him entirely because he loves her so much. Yet, he can't leave because he just gets so caught up in the pain of the constant rejection "hang on what you repeat", and now he's finally hit a point where the relationship ended, but he's not done yet because she dismantled him, and it's time to repair.

and the whole "hands like secrets" line i think can go two ways as well:
hands as in "im ready to strangle you i'm so hurt, it's so hard not to"...but i don't think Christian is that violent >_>
or...hands as in "i would normally reach for you, but i know i can't because you're just going to break me again and again...

that was long, sorry. ^^;;

This song quite frankly, is a reflection on past relationships and how he has handled them. He regrets how he's acted in the past (things are gonna change for the better...). He wants to work on how he handles these situations in the future in a more Christian light(I am the patron saint of lost causes...(Change)... Only a matter of time...). the second verse coould very well talk about how he wants to bring God into his life more and help him with this. this is his "prelude to a lifetime of you." Dismantle and repair could simply be what God does to him; Picks him apart and sees exaclty who he is and with (God's) help, he can be repaired.

Much of this can be seen in the lyrics but it takes a bit of digging to figure out exactly what (Stephan) is getting at. Figure it out for yourself in his blog (he wrote an entry before he wrote this song and it inspired him to write a song about it). http://modesty.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

The first verse in the first part of the song is all about thw writer and what he's going through. He's most likely seeing someone who is falling apart or dying. "One last glance a taxicab, Images scar my mind" He is thinking a lot about this person. "The night was young and so were we Talked about life, God, death, and your family Didn't want any promises Just my undivided honesty" The writer spent some time talking with this person about things that a dying person would need to talk about.

I am the patron saint of lost causes
A fraction of who I once believed
(Change)
Only a matter of time
Opinions I will try and rewrite
If life had background music
Playing your song
I've got to be honest, I tried to escape you
But the orchestra plays on

Patron Saint of Lost causes refers to Jude, or Judas (one of Jesus's 12 apostles). THIS IS NOT JUDAS ISCARIOT. Jude wrote the self-titled book located before Revelations. He was called the patron saint of lost causes because his book tells a lot of how we need faith when we go through tough times in our lives. Even though the writer feels like Jude (where he can have faith in God during hard times) now, he used to be in a place where he was a lot worse off. The writer has tried to escape his problem completely, but the problem is still there (i've tried to escape you) (playing your song....orchestra plays on)

The prechorus is God's or someone asurance that things are going to get better, change from a bad feeling.

"Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases like knives
You words can cut me through
Dismantle me down
Repair
You've dismantled me
You've dismantled me"

The chorus is talking about God. I think i'm wrong, but hands may be refering to praying to God. Like I said, i'm probably wrong. The next part I am sure about though. In Hebrews 4:12, it talks about how God's word is a double-edged sword that cuts into us and judges our toughts and attitudes. God dismantles us and then repairs us into people who are righteous and holy in His eyes.

Hey b2thedizzle89, I just thought it was kinda interesting/funny how your interpretation was much like Stephan's actual meaning behind the song. "He was called the patron saint of lost causes because his book tells a lot of how we need faith when we go through tough times in our lives." You should check out his blog on April 04. Theres quite a bit more meaning behind it than the complete Christian meaning you give it. Given it IS mostly about religious renewal, theres other points in his life where he could use the analogy of "patron saint of lost causes" check it out!

this song im sure isnt about god, but its about how this girl can do so much to him. she can DISMANTLE and REPAIR him, lol. he cant keep his hands away from her, like the way he can't keep secrets from her. its about love and how this girl can break him down and repair him but he can't stay away from her. by saying the wrong thing she can "cut him through". he wants her to save him from himself, because he believes that shes the only one who can. they had something special, and it's as if he won't let it die. that's just what i think. a beautiful song.

"Hands like secrets are the hardest thing to keep from you". This line just blew me away; I see it as him struggling to stay away and not being able to touch the woman (or man) he wants to.

This song just reflects my life at the moment; cliched, I know but I've never listened to a song only to have it just click. Amazing.

On the deluxe edition DVD for this song, Stephen Christian says that this song has to do with Dismantling yourself and getting rid of the bad stuff and habbits in your life and putting new ones in. That's kind of what he said... anyway, the way it's written it seems like someone trying to escape God.

"Playing your song
I've got to be honest, I tried to escape you
But the orchestra plays on"

Those lines make me think of how God will always come after us to help us (the orchestra plays on), even though we've run from him (I tried to escape you).

The line "Save me from myself" could refer to the bad habbits of the person in the song... then after that, "Things are gonna change now
For the better" could refer to him changing and getting rid of those habbits...
