Even if you'd never stray from me
I question your fidelity.
There'd always be a shroud of suspicion
And my heart's a liability
With your hands marooned so freshly red
You'd wrap your lips around my neck.
Try and force to love the thought of me.
Simple motions make me ill.
Was it bitter when you tossed and turned
on his undercover mattress?
Did it feel so good?
Hope it felt so good.
Don't know what I'd do
if you lost sleep over little old me.
He's so much better.
They're all much better.
Take off your sweater,
your shoes, and your shirt,
and get to work.
Maybe this is just a work of art--
scripted players in a play of lust.
Hope the end is well worth waiting for--
everything you wished it'd be
Was it bitter when you tossed and turned
On his undercover mattress?
Did it feel so good? Hope it felt so good.
Don't know what I'd do
if you lost sleep over little old me.
He's so much better.
They're all much better.
Take off your sweater,
your shoes, and your shirt,
and get to work.
Oh my god, what have I done?
Now my darling, put your clothes back on.
Oh my god, what have I done?
Now my darling, put your clothes back on.
Because you can't be caught red-handed if you're not red-handed.
My darling, I would never say those words to you,
I was pulling out my heart so I could pin it to my sleeve
On display for you to see, I'm on display.
Because you can't be caught red-handed if you're not red-handed.
My darling, I would never say those words to you.
I was pulling out my heart so I could pin it to my sleeve
On display for you to see, I'm on display.
Oh my god, what have I done?
Now my darling, put your clothes back on.
Oh my god, what have I done?

He knows she strayed, ouch, he’s killing his soul for her?! Yep.
For this song, consult the police’s “Roxanne”
Its “his” under cover mattress, I think that ms. Leading is being yelled at for going out of her way to sex someone. And the boy is engaging in angry sex.
“scripted players” hm.. someones behind it all perhaps “hope the endings well worth waiting for” again the theme of thinking your life is a story.
Soooo… then he learns something of himself as he realizes that he has wronged his leading lady. He is on display?? Well the veil will only be lifted if you show your soul. Remember that line?
My mom said that you learn a lot about yourself by dating and loving: case and point.
The scene is abstractly bloody, not literally bloody. The red hands, grabbing his heart Indiana jones style.
Then, there is the Coda of a harp. This is him and her making up. And then having sex, if the guitar solo in the next song is that. Or they break up. Lets find out.
Its so much better, they're all much better"
Considering the song is about trust and jealousy I'm pretty sure this is the Dear Hunter's inferiority complex talking.
He thinks about the time he spent with her and how her hands were "marooned so freshly red" and refuses to believe that she ever really loved him if she could be unfaithful, when the reality was probably that she had no choice.
Unable to see this, He gets incredibly bitter and upset and throws a bunch of insults her way; "Take off your sweater your shoes and your shirt and get to work" being a particularly below the belt comment, I thought.
This song seems to be a turning point on the album; the point when his heart is truely broken. From here onwards, the style kind of changes.
It fits the story seeing as this CD is: Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading.
"Was it bitter when you tossed and turned
On an under covered mattress did it feel so good hope it felt so good
Don't know what I'd do if you lost sleep over little old me
Its so much better, their all much better
Take off your sweater your shoes and your shirt and get to work"
This is where he realizes he can't accept her profession since she'll be with so many men who aren't him and it drives him crazy thinking about it.
Id question your fidelity
Thered always be a shroud of suspicion
And my hearts a liability"
He knows she's a prostitute, and he figures if she can just have sex with guys as a job, she could just as easily sleep with them because she's used to it. She's a whore and it is expected of her.
"With your hands marooned so freshly red
Youd wrap your lips around my neck
Try and forced to love the thought of me
Simple motions make me ill"
He knows when he goes to see her, that she has been with other guys just before him, "marooned so freshly red". She is just doing what she thinks he wants, to make him feel loved.
"Was it bitter when you tossed and turned
On an under covered mattress did it feel so good hope it felt so good
Dont know what Id do if you lost sleep over little old me
Its so much better, their all much better
Take off your sweater your shoes and your shirt and get to work"
He's confronting her on her lifestyle. Asking her if she enjoys it, and if she ever thinks about him while she's doing it. And yes, I think he is just being arrogant when he tells her to "get to work"
"Maybe this is just a work of art
Scripted players in a play of lust
Hope the endings well worth waiting for
And everything you wished it be"
He's second guessing everything now. If she can pretend love, maybe everything is all a lie.
"Oh my god what have I done
Now my darling put your clothes back on
Oh my god what have I done
Now my darling put your clothes back on
Cause you cant be caught red handed
If youre not red handed
My darling if I ever said those words to you
I was pulling out my heart so I could pin it to my sleeve
A display for you to see Im on display"
He's upset for getting mad at her now. He regrets saying what he said before. He wants to take it back. He figures its all been in his head that she's been cheating on him.
"Maybe this all just a work of art..."
He's coming to grips with it all. He's accepting her profession. Hence the, "you can't be caught red handed if you're not red handed." Accusing a whore of infidelity would be like accusing a war vet of murder.
all opinions
Even if you never strayed from me
Id question your fidelity
Thered always be a shroud of suspicion
And my hearts a liability
after seeing portly entering, and the pimp, telling him
"Hey there"
"Good day"
"Is there a service I can possibly propose?"
"Ms leading seems to me to be a proper butterfly"--Boy
"Then I suggest you pack your bags and learn to drive!"
he to "open is eyes, and what do you see here?"
With your hands marooned so freshly red
Youd wrap your lips around my neck
Try and forced to love the thought of me
Simple motions make me ill
Their second meeting, with Boy's doubt becoming more vicarious
and he can't take it,
and as they prepare to have sex, he he's about to break, due to the strain,
Oh my god what have I done
Now my darling put your clothes back on
well that's basically him saying he made a tremendous mistake ever following her off the Delphi Express
"Cause you cant be caught red handed
If your not red handed
My darling I would never say those words to you
I was pulling out my heart so I could pin it to my sleeve
A display for you to see im on display"
Well, Ms.Leading can't be caught red handed if they had nothing in the first place, he didn't know that she was a prostitute, he would had never say "i love you", because, basically, he had been completely open, just to be sown up when boy. discovered she cheated on him with Portly.
well indeed he is quite mad, which he never sees her again, they only communicate through letters, hence "Dear Ms.Leading", and "Black Sandy Beaches" is about all the letters sent, and what happened after.
"Vital Vessels Vindicates" takes a complete turn away from Ms.Leading, and talks about him going onto the war ship
Since then, the question has been eating at him and finally he explodes. He guesses (perhaps because of his mother) that Ms. Leading is a prostitute and has been playing him, so he yells at her and treats her like a prostitute.
Then he stops himself and tells her to put her clothes back on. He feels ashamed for having treated her like that. This time, he takes a calmer approach and tells her that he doesn't know whether or not she is a prostitute and that he would probably have been paranoid no matter what.
He also realizes because of this display of emotion that he is much more in love with her than he thought, and thus more vulnerable to getting hurt. This thought is what leads him down the path of breaking up with her.
But I took some time today and read through all the lyrics and listened to all the dear hunters songs and i have to say that I got the impression of that "the boy" knew all along that she were a prostitute but still fell in love with her. I think that he is kind of obessed with her and thinking about her all the time and that she is also starting to have feelings for him "Dont know what Id do if you lost sleep over little old me"
But that's just my theory of course :)And this is definately my favortie TDH song.
to sum up what happens in other songs, leading up to this:
Ms. Leading, as we all know is a whore. He walks in on her having sex with another man in The Dime, so then he runs away to the lake and the river...
this song:
ms. leading follows him to the lake and the river, and from there she confronts him, telling him it was nothing.. he then says that no matter what that after he'll always question her fidelity, and that he can't do it.. And then he feels bad because he scares her back to the city..
I think??
