In a 2005 commencement speech at Emory, Tom Brokaw said:

" . . . real life is not college; real life is not high school. Here is a secret that no one has told you: Real life is junior high.

The world that you're about to enter is filled with junior high adolescent pettiness, pubescent rivalries, the insecurities of 13-year-olds, and the false bravado of 14-year-olds. "

Absolutely spot on, isn't it?

It's a very good song but the song and the video together are just brilliant. Rarely do I see that happen. It's already one of the highlights of my year in music.

i don't know why, but when i hear this song i can't help but associate it with a break up..
every time i hear it i think of tattered relationships and bitter aftertastes and irrationality and backbiting and all that...

well i have to agree that pretty much all these guesses would be correct, however I have to agree with ahab and Lazy, but mainly with ahab. This seems more like a personal thing, like the person is in te after affects of a breakup or dispute with a friend, and now are enraged and saying things, like "all those opposed can rot in hell," kind of like an, I don't care about anyone or anything attitude. But I do like pretty much all the ideas hear. :]

I think Lazy is right when he says that this is a take on religion and how all the self-righteous say that believe in what I believe or your wrong. However, I think this can be applied to a broader sense of things. Also, I think the part about sticking together is about how were finding things out together and we need other opinions to help mold our own or something to that a(e?)ffect.

I would stick with the religion idea as a meaning for this song. Considering all the members of the band are Christians. I believe that the song may be about the post tribulation beliefs of the rapture. (the belief that Christs return to earth will happen after the anti-Christs reign on earth) And the song would be about living as a Christian on earth until Christs return.

I think that could be right, but i originally saw it as a more personal thing. Like one friend insisting that they're right, and anyone with a different opinion can rot in hell, and their friend may be one of those people. and then the bridge part (well it's high time...) kind of adds to that..
but then again Lazy's idea is just as good.

very ambigous song...the lyrics kinda make me feel it could be a vague take on relgion. More importantly, the self-rightous people in charge of religion. If you don't believe their words and beliefs, you are damned to hell. All the while with this "we're in this together" type of message that they really don't back up. The last bit kinda seems like one man's stand against this system. But yeah, no clue. any ideas?
