Lyrics for Kill All Your Friends as interpreted by A Red Hotel

Kill All Your Friends Lyrics
Well you can hide a lot about yourself
But honey, what are you gonna do?
And you can sleep in a coffin
But the past ain't through with you,

Cuz we are all a bunch of liars
Tell me baby who do you wanna be?
And we are all about to sell it
Cus its tragic with a capital 'T'
Let it be, Let it be, LET IT BE!

Cuz we all wanna party when the funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
It's been 8 bitter years since I've been seeing your face
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And you're walking away
And I will die in this place

Sometimes you scrape and sink so low,
I'm shocked at what you're capable of.
And if this is a coronation
I ain't feeling the love

Cuz we are all a bunch of animals
that never paid attention in school
So tell me all about your problems
I was killing before killing was cool
You're so cool, you're so cool [SO COOL

Cuz we all wanna party when a funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
It's been 9 bitter years since I've been seeing your face
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And you're walking away and I will die in this place

You'll never take me alive, you'll never take me alive
Do what it takes to survive cos I'm still here
You'll never get me alive, you'll never take me alive
Do what it takes to survive and I'm still here
You'll never take me alive, you'll never get me alive
Do what it takes to survive and I'm still here
You'll never get me [Get me!, you'll never take me [Take me!
You'll never get me alive!

Cuz we all wanna party when the funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
It's been 10 fucking years since
I've been seeing your face round here
And you're walking away and I will drown in the fear.

Oh ok I get this song! the meaning of kill all your friends is answered on just one word, BETRAYAL.
I think this song of talking about how a certine person(a friend maybe) betrayaled there other friend in such a horrible way that the other friends want revenge. (Sometimes you scrape and sink so low,
I'm shocked at what you're capable of.
And if this is a coronation
I ain’t feeling the love) and this lyric (Well you can hide a lot about yourself
But honey what are you gonna do?
And you can sleep in a coffin
But the past ain’t through with you)

I think I agree with TheRipper on the meaning of this song. In Gerard Way's new comic book The Umbrella Academy, I think the title of the second issue or something is "We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals." So the only seeing each other at friends' funerals and therefore "kill all your friends" so we can see each other more often, sounds like a reasonable meaning.

Please Gerard, your metaphors are becoming WAY TOO HARD TO DECODE!
Uhh lesse... talking about how friends stab eachother in the back or gossip about eachother. That's the obvious one, maybe..
Breaking up with a friend..
Well anyways, I've never found alot of MCR songs make sense anyways. The new album is alot better at making sense in the lyrics though.

This is one of my favorite songs. Although my interpretation is far from correct. This is what I pull from it nonetheless. Which is the beauty of lyrics when everyone can pull something different from it.

Too me, this song is about a group of friends, and excluding one of them, one by one. "Because we're all bunch of liars" "Because we are all a bunch of animals" It happens all the time. Friends that gossip and emotionally destroy their so-called friends.

"We all wanna party when the funeral ends" Make me thing of the group of friends laughing at this excluded friend's misfortunes and defeat. And taking pleasure on thier misery. Even though, they may soon turn on each other just for the sake of drama.

"So tell me all about your problems
I was killing before killing was cool
You’re so cool, you’re so cool [SO COOL]"

So tell me all about your problems, that makes me think of someone who is listening to another friends problems but plans to use it against them to "kill" them.

The main character knows this is the "cool" thing to do, to put people down to rise up to the top. He claims that he was killing before it was cool. So it's in his nature. But seems to have an underlying guilt about the whole thing, as he says that he'll never be taken alive. As in, he knows all the things he's done to his "friends" will come back to haunt him.

Anyway, my interpretation is probably really wrong. But I like to think this is what it's about.

I think its about not forgetting where you came from.
like, wherever you go, whatever you do, you have to remember where you came from.

and the "characters" in the song had been friends at school, and when they graduated had gone there separate ways , one character had gone on to a bigger and better thing, whereas the other person had stayed in where they grew up.

they hadnt seen each other in years, when a friend dies had he/she came back for the funeral.
the character realises that this person has changed.
not necessarily for the better.

and the character tries to change the person who stayed in town.

(possibly about someone they went to highschool with in jersey?)

Devilchild has it from a media stand point, if that's what the song is refering to. On the literal side, "Kill all of your friends" may have something to do with Gerard's grandmother passing away. Depending on when the song was written. The song is refering to one funeral, not a series of funerals, because he is referencing how long it has been since he has seen some of the people there. 8, 9, and 10 years. Believe me, I hadn't heard this song when my grandmother died a few months ago. I made the statement at the funeral, " It sure is a shame the only time old friends and family get together is at a funeral". I literally could've written this song in the parking lot! I saw people there that I use to be close with that I hadn't seen in 3 to 10 years! We all put on our acts, talked about our lives and went our separate ways( after the dinner part of course)! The angry individual in the song seems to be someone close to the deceased, they have probably spent their entire life in close proximity to them. The individuals he is refering to are the "out of towners" so to speak who have resurfaced because of a death. They never visited or spent time with the deceased when they were alive but they show up to sell their grief because it's "tragic with a capital T ".
Knowing it's all just a put on, "if this is a coronation I ain't feeln the love". Leaving the individual wandering what the other people think of him. They all leave and return to their lives while he remains to "die in this place" that they all migrate back to every time someone they know passes away. Refering back to the coffin, at the beginning of the song, meaning you can't escape what people say or think even after your gone. So who do you think is going to show up to cry over you at your funeral that hasn't spoken to you in years? Think about that and there is your non media meaning!

i absolutely love this song too! but...i'm afraid i have a different interpretation.
if it fits in with The Black Parade concept, then i've always invisioned it as the point that The Patient goes to/imagines his funeral. instead of everyone celebrating his life, their actually condeming it. in fact, making a mockery of it. (it's also reminded as an anti-Helena song.)
outside of the concept, i've always thought of the funeral as a metaphor for a high school reunion. i think Gerard's all ready had a ten year one pass (Ray, too, i believe). maybe he went to it and realized how people have changed towards him b/c now he's famous and all. maybe he's own 'friends' have turned against him and Gerard feels betrayed. and this song could be saying, "hey, it's been awhile since you've known me, i've changed. stop pretending like i'm that same person!"
by the way, TheUmbrellaAcademy, i'm glad you noticed the same saying in the upcoming comic book as i did! in the free comic book day one, the title is also from this song too! maybe the whole song is actually a preview of the comic? hmm...

Me and a friend came up with a odd and most likely wrong meaning to this song.
A man was taken to prison for killing his friends, one of the ones he didn't kill is visiting him, then he's watchinh her/him walk away,
"And you walking away and I will die in this place"
This place being prison. The funeral bits are most likely about him seeing his friends at the funerals of the murdered ones. Sounds like a cool story xD

I think this song is about fake friends. People that pretend to care about you but stab you in the back.
It's about ending a relationship with those people and being happy about it.

"Cos we are all a bunch of liars, Tell me baby who do you wanna be?" I think is about how pople lie and pretend to be someone their not, pretend they are your friends. Or how you lie and act like someone else to fit in with your "friends".

"And if this is a coronation
I ain’t feeling the love" I feel it refers to when they do all this nice things, are nice to you, etc. but you feel it isn't honest, there's no love.

The part "So tell me al about your problems" Makes me think of when they pretend to care about you, but they really don't.

But of course it can be interpreted in many ways and makes sense. :3

It's not really a matter of interpretation. The whole song sums up a plotline in Gerard's graphic novel (I think it's a graphic novel, anyway) called Umbrella Academy. A line from the song, "...But the Past Ain't Through With You," is one of the chapter titles.

It's about a character called the Rumor, who gets done in by her own unique powers and through the prowess of her so-call friends-- Any lie she says, happens.

my favorite line is:

"And you can sleep in a coffin
But the past ain’t through with you"

I like this because it made me think about something I never thought about, how dieing doesn't necessarily stop your past, like not everything is gonna disappear instantly

I think it talks about how hypocritical, fake, and low most people really are.

The "Kill All You Friends" deal (and the chorus), to me, is basically saying that it's sad that someone has to die before we actually notice, respect, and love them. Some people act like they were best friends of the person who died at funerals when, in reality, they probably had so much shit with them or just ignored them.

Brilliant song.

If it means about the friends being a bunch of backstabbing people who gossip and betray you, then I can totally relate to this song.

But I also agree it could tie in with the patient story.

I think everyone might be taking all the mentions of death and killing a little too literally.

"I was killing before killing was cool" is obviously a referance to the "emo" trend.

"We all wanna party when the funeral ends" I think is just saying that it's the hard times that bring us all together, or possibly to shock people. Heaps of people I've played this song to are really outraged by the lyrics, but we DO all party after a funeral, don't we?!

And of course, there's references back to their school days. Judging by Disenchanted, Teenagers, the filmclip for I'm Not Okay, they just had a really rough time at school.

That's my opinion anyway. =]

To me; this song is making fun of the emo thing, to me it's like... "woo my friend left this world!!!" and, also about the "because we are all a bunch of animals who never payed attention in school" makes me think of how kids don't pay attention in school (duh) and end up not knowing/wasting there life. the line "if this is a correnation i aint feeling the love" makes me think of how like.. if you wanna be emo there's not much love to join.. haha i love emo kids don't worry
