Lyrics for Kill All Your Friends as interpreted by A Red Hotel

Kill All Your Friends Lyrics
Well you can hide a lot about yourself
But honey, what are you gonna do?
And you can sleep in a coffin
But the past ain't through with you,

Cuz we are all a bunch of liars
Tell me baby who do you wanna be?
And we are all about to sell it
Cus its tragic with a capital 'T'
Let it be, Let it be, LET IT BE!

Cuz we all wanna party when the funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
It's been 8 bitter years since I've been seeing your face
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And you're walking away
And I will die in this place

Sometimes you scrape and sink so low,
I'm shocked at what you're capable of.
And if this is a coronation
I ain't feeling the love

Cuz we are all a bunch of animals
that never paid attention in school
So tell me all about your problems
I was killing before killing was cool
You're so cool, you're so cool [SO COOL

Cuz we all wanna party when a funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
It's been 9 bitter years since I've been seeing your face
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And you're walking away and I will die in this place

You'll never take me alive, you'll never take me alive
Do what it takes to survive cos I'm still here
You'll never get me alive, you'll never take me alive
Do what it takes to survive and I'm still here
You'll never take me alive, you'll never get me alive
Do what it takes to survive and I'm still here
You'll never get me [Get me!, you'll never take me [Take me!
You'll never get me alive!

Cuz we all wanna party when the funeral ends
[Ba ba ba, ba ba baaa
And we all get together when we bury our friends
It's been 10 fucking years since
I've been seeing your face round here
And you're walking away and I will drown in the fear.

i only had to listen to this song once to basically get the jist of what its about... placin the name of the song with the lyrics the song is about someone who was in love with antother probably in highschool or somethin and they are able to see that person again for the first time in years when they are re-united at a mutual friends funeral.. when the funeral ends that person has to watch the other walk out there life again after the funeral... they figure that the only way for them to see this other again is after the death of another friend.. hints the name "kill all your friends"

That kid has it so right.
As soon as I read his explination, i litterally said out loud "OMG!"
Lame i know.

MCR are smurfing amazing.

It means that he lost his friends after Highschool, but he is seeing them with every funeral of a friend of him. so he is going to kill his friend to see his old friends back.

oddly enough then, it reminds me of the movie "Without A Paddle"

all of the guys were reunited at a close friend's funeral. but, that is beside the point.

it shows just how much everyone can change, but when that funeral ended... everyone wanted to hang out. they just wanted to have fun, and be teenagers again. but i get the vibe that, it took a course of over three years (hence, eight years, nine years, ten years) and there was three funerals. and, the last friend was maybe the one who has changed the most. you wish you were a kid again, but you're not.

this is basically what's been said before, but i'm expanding on it and stuff:

its about this guy who's at a funeral for an old friend, and probably a series of funerals over a couple of years, and different people attending, so the years change every time in the chorus.

anyways, he's pissed that his friends have changed, and he's the only one who hasn't, and he's mocking who they supposedly are now "So tell me all about your problems
I was killing before killing was cool
You’re so cool, you’re so cool [SO COOL]"

and, he's also pissed that they don't respect the dead friend, that they're not acting how they should be, which could be not crying and stuff: "Cos we are all a bunch of liars
Tell me baby who do you wanna be?
And we are all about to sell it
Cus its tragic with a capital ‘T’
Let it be, Let it be, LET IT BE!" and they are just puting on the sad get-up until the funeral's over: "
Cus we all wanna party when the funeral ends"

and when they leave, he'll stay in their hometown and not change who he is

and maybe, it may be that he hasn't grown up and continues to dwell on the past and stuff, and doesn't want to let go

in short, i reckon this song is about a boy who fell in love with a girl in his friendship group at the beginning of highschool. he then continued to be in love with her but could never tell her this because he was a bit shy (and sociapathic mwah haha), and so it just festered away in him until graduaton and the whole freindship group went thier seperate ways. until the funeral of one of thier friends and they all attended and he was able to see her again, they talked and got a bit closer but at the end of the wake she just left and he was left alone. so i reckon the chorus is talking about how every 8,9, and 10 years he kills one of his friends (hence the name) so he can talk to her.

the line *and i will die in this place* could mean the city, or town he lives in or it could also mean he could die in that place emotionally, like he will die being afraid of telling her how he actually feels. this also fits in with the line *i will die in the fear*

okay so it wasn't in short but i tried.

i would have to say that this another one of the band's get back at all the media and the people that stereotype them. "cause we are all a bunch of animals that never paid attention in school,"- alot of uptight people consider rock artists as high school dropouts. "i was killing before killing was cool [you're so cool x3]" is like when they used the themes of revenge and death WAY before it became the "IT" thing with everyone and before it became the cool thing. in the amount of years "it's been 8..9..10 years," Gerard is probably referring to someone he's known that long. But for "if this is a coronation" line- it's probably for all of the "coronations" we've given Gerard and all of the guys- like when we voted him Almighty God of Rock- the media probably wanted some scathing commentary on the band. SO, I think it's MCR's reply to "scathing commentary" just like other songs on The Black Parade were written for that purpose. Sometimes the media that hates them, gives them coronations of all types- so they can sell stuff that has their faces plastered on the cover per se. And to grayce, I think it is probably somewhat directed to Otter (Matt Pelissier) and possibly in a way to Gee's ex, who he did have almost 10 years of relationship- on the parts that could be about love....

Perhaps loving or liking someone for so damn long, but never telling them.. and the only time they ever see that person is at funerals for their mutual friends..

"Its been 10 fucking years since
I’ve been seeing your face round here
And you’re walking away and I will drown in the fear"

-Having to wait so long to see them
-And that person constantly walks away without a word, and this person is finding it so fearful

First verse: is about the fact that your lies will catch up with you, and that people easily swallow lies cos they are liars themselves.

"And we are all about to sell it
Cus its tragic with a capital ‘T’
Let it be, Let it be, LET IT BE!"
This part is a kinda like sarcastic hit on the people who stereotype them.

The chorus: seems to be about so-called friends who haven't been around suddenly showing up, expecting open arms, just to leave again when you are down and out.

"Sometimes you scrape and sink so low....
Cos we are all a bunch of animals
And never paid attention in school"
This refers to the lengths someone has gone to, to gain perhaps popularity or trust. Yet he never believed that person or took in that situation bcos chose to avoid brain washed or easily impressed.

"So tell me all about your problems
I was killing before killing was cool
You’re so cool, you’re so cool [SO COOL]"
I guess this refers to the fact that MCR's ideas writing style are been imitated by others and its becoming a trend?

"You’ll never take me alive, you’ll never take me alive
Do what it takes to survive cos I’m still here
You’ll never get me alive, you’ll never take me alive.."
He's saying that they(the ppl who 'used' them if you cud say that) will never take them down without a fight and they better watch out cos they will still be around.

Overall, this song seems to be all about the media hype that has overwhelmed the band so their ideas have become somewhat trendy.
Or else about lies and friends screwing you over sort of buliding you up only to take you down again
I know some people probably mentioned similar thing before, just my thougths anywayz.

I think a lot of it is about how he realized that they all got together for funerals and that's how they [he and his old friends] would see each other. So then he and his friends kept killing each other off to see each other [which I think explains the 8 years changing to 9 years changing to 10 years because someone dies every year or something]. I think the "walking away and I will drown in the fear" has to do with his friends leaving yet again and the knowledge that another person has to die before they get to see each other.

"We are all a bunch of liars" - they know that they're killing each other but they just go about it like it's normal and don't really discuss it.

I think the b-section is about how they won't kill him to add to their funeral list, he'll never be taken alive.

"Scrape and sink so low, I'm shocked at what you're capable of" - he's wondering how they all sink so low as to kill people to see each other.

I might just be taking it too deeply, indigo_blu's explaination is viable, too.

I think this is a song about a person killing their old friends from high school, but in a different way...

To me -- and this could just be my sick-o noir obsession talking -- it's from a point of view of a guy, talking about a girl he keeps seeing at his friend's funerals. She knew them in high school, and basically she's been going through and marrying these guys, or going out with them, and then killing them. The guy is afraid that the girl will kill him and he wants to try to stop her. So that's where all the "You'll never take me alive," "I will die in this place," "I will drown in the fear" stuff comes from. He's not going to let her kill him, damn it.

"We're all a bunch of animals that never paid attention in school"... Reminds me of my school. :)

Oh... And I've listened to this song about 20 times today. I love it a lot.

However, I want to add that I don't think it's necessarily unrelated to the story of the Patient. I'd love to see some interpretations of how could tie in.

Maybe it's the Patient going to a friend's funeral? Or maybe it's his "friends" showing up and raising hell because he's gone. That would be cool.

going along with what everyone else is saying about change
it seems like what hes trying to say
is that now that everyones back together
everyone has changed but him
and the only way everyone can get along again
is if a friend dies
"cuz we all wanna party when a funeral ends"
because now that a friend dies they all get back together despite the fact their all different
so the point of the song to kill all your friends is sarcastic saying if you wanna keep it the same and have fun just kill everyone

There might be a double meaning here:

1) I don't think it's about a funeral, rather, it's a commentary on a self-destructive group of "friends" that has grown so distant that they would only see each other at funerals.

2) Also a mockery of the ridiculousness of popular emo culture. (Perhaps as a response to the "emo" label?)
Plus other points which have already been made..

WeAllLoveThem_MCR,
To me it sounds like part of the story, because it's like the song is from the view point of one of the patient's friends after the funeral, like "It's been 8 bitter years since I've been seeing your face". It's kinda like the friend is talking to the patient. Actually, it really could be, because it goes. "And you can sleep in a coffin but the past ain't through with you". So maybe...

pommedeterrific took the words right out of my mouth. first time i heard this, i thought it was a commentary on emo and the labels placed on them.
"we are all a bunch of liars tell me baby who do you wanna be?" - they're labeled sellouts and fakes

"we are all about to sell it 'cause its tragic with a capital T" - they're a gimmick

"sometimes you scrape and sink so low i'm shocked at what you're capable of" - media bashing/haters

"and if this is a coronation i ain't feelin the love" - others label them as the definitive band of our time (coronation as kings) yet they're constantly being hated on

"i was killing before killing was cool" - they were hte first to popularize themes of revenge, etc.

"you'll never take me alive, do what it takes to survive 'cause i'm still here" - we'll last no matter what anyone says

That's just what I get. I also see the whole changing and growing apart from people you once cared about, and only seeing them when one of the group dies.

Hooray for Black Parade b-sides!
