Lyrics for Lollipop as interpreted by Pebble

Lollipop Lyrics
Hey, what's the big idea?

Yo Mika.

I said,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
I said,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.

Sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.
Say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.
say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.

I went walking in with my mama one day,
when she warn me what people say,
live your life until love is found,
'cause love's gonna get you down.
Take a look at the girl next door,
she's a player and a down right whore,
Jesus loves her, she wants more,
oh bad girls get you down.

Singing,
Sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.
Say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.
say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.

Mama told me what I should know,
too much candy gonna rot your soul,
if she loves you, let her go,
'cause love only gets you down.
Take a look at the boy like me,
never stood on my own two feet,
now I'm blue, as I can be,
oh love couldn't get me down.

Singing,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.
Say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.
say love, say love,
or love's gonna get you down.

I went walking with my mama one day,
when she warn me what people say,
live your life until love is found,
or love's gonna get you down.

Singing,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.
Say love (say love), say love (say love),
or love's gonna get you down.
say love (say love), say love (say love),
or love's gonna get you down.

Mama told me what I should know,
too much candy gonna rot your soul,
if she loves you, let her go,
'cause love only gets you down.

Whoa-oh, whoa-oh, whoa-oh, lollipop.
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh, whoa-oh, lollipop.

Sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down,
say,
sucking too hard on your lollipop,
or love's gonna get you down.

Hey sorry everyone but the truth about this song is that it is about x. it is saying that if you suck on your lollipop (lollipop x) to much and too long long is gonna et you down because you won't feel as happy anymore after taking it for a long period of time. Mika knows his song is play a lot in rave clubs and he was sending a hidden message to not go overboard. Thanks folks

"sucking too hard on your lollipop" means to dwell over something (usually love related) until it becomes obsessive.

The message that I got from this song was that one should not suck too hard on their lollipop, otherwise they will not see the love around them.

. . . . -shrugs- It's a catchy, cute song. Might coreograph to it sometime :3

in one of my favorite movies there's this quote I like:
"Without the sour the sweet ain't so sweet."
I think that's basically kind of what this song is saying, in a way.
Like, enjoy the sweet stuff
cuz sooner or later you're gonna have to deal with the sour....

i agree with cuteforapigmy. in the song mika even says "too much candy gonna rot your soul". when you think of lollipops you think of childlike innocence, yet you also think of sugary desires. it's very ironic in its own representation... and is thus a great metaphor for young kids gone bad (instead of leaning towards the former con notation of lollipops, they give into their desires of love and sex far too early)

advice from his mother to him:

if some girl is suckin too hard on your lollipop, you better let her go or she's gonna get hurt and bring you down. i dont think the lollipop represents innocence at all...

right?

I think the lollipop shows her innocence, and basically if you suck on it too hard, the lollipop will get smaller and eventually gone, so hes all like take your time, enjoy the lollipop (innocence, young life) while you still have it. before is too late and you have to deal with grown up stuff like love

omg this is HONESTLY the best song EVER!!!

lmao.

and its about him telling his sister to "slow down" in a sense and just take everything including sex at a reasonable pace... but hes basicly just sating if u go too fast then everythings just gonna go wrong and "loves gonna get ya down" that is my interpretation.. so yuppers...

I feel so stupid! My ex-boyfriend gave me this CD 3 weeks before he dumped me unexpectedly... And 5 months later I still can't get over him... Love really got me down. I should have just listened to Mika.... ='(

I think it's more along the lines about falling in love at a young age. He says it's no good because you can get hurt, or crave it, and wear it thin by going for it to much, not just mentally but physically.

Before reading this page, I had a very dfferent idea of what this song was about. Going with what Schock was saying (though why the hell did you capitalize every damn word?), I also thought the contrast between lyrics and music was interesting, because the lyrics were so cynical seeming and hopeless while the music was very happy and energetic. I first thought that the song was claiming that entering into a committed relationship was only setting yourself up for pain and heartbreak, much more than it was worth. The lines "Suckin' too hard on your lollipop, oh love's gonna get you down" and "too much candy's gonna rot your soul" then meant that striving for love was just going to cause you to become bitter (because the relationship will inevitably fail to satisfy the need for love) and a more miserable person. As in, the more/harder you try the worse it gets.

However, after hearing what he had to say about it, reading the lyrics out of the actual booklet, and seeing the picture behind said lyrics, I am more than willing to believe that the song's meant to convince his sister to save herself sexually.

I think the song is about not getting obsessed with love (sucking too hard on the lollipop) because it will break your heart. Instead, you just "live your life until love is found" and think about other things, moving along until you find something that works for you. So, don't spend your whole life searching for love, or you'll forget to live it and ultimately be disappointed by the results of your search.

"Jesus loves her, she wants *moooore*" is pretty darn funny.

Okay, I don't understand this:

Take a look at a boy like me,
Never stood on my own two feet,
Now I'm blue, as I can be,
Oh, love couldn't get me down!

If love couldn't get him down, why is he blue?

Alternate interpretation: I sometimes hear it as "love, COME GET ME DOWN!" He's always been real dependent on his lovers ("never stood on my own two feet") and now he's not in a relationship so he's blue and he's saying, as he does throughout the rest of the song, that love gets you down, but it's *love*, so you want it to get you down! Thus adding a layer of unexpected depth!

I don't think the explanation he gave about telling his little sister not to have sex makes much sense, in context. If he had just left out the part I quoted above it would have all tied in together for a single (and depressingly conservative >:| ) message. I also kinda think he just really really wanted to work a song around this particular double entendre so there's not any sort of strongly intended meaning at all besides "Go get up and dance to a guy singing about lollipops! go do it! right now!" but that doesn't really come off well in interviews so he was like "UH, UH, MY SISTER"

i think its basically about holding on too tightly to the one you love, ie 'sucking to hard on your lollipop'
because then it says about 'if she loves you, let her go'
as opposed to the theory about not losing your innocence too soon...

if you suck too hard on your lollipop love's gunna get you down.

Great song.
I agree with schock that the lollipop is a metaphor for innocence. I don't, however, think it's literally about taking things slow, but more figuratively about being careful about giving away your heart.

I think the irony of sad lyrics with happy music is purposeful. When I felt like my love life was plotting against me, I listened to this song and I felt happy. This song does not create pity for failure in love, but instead makes it easy to swallow.

For that reason, the sexual conotations of this song could be the opposite of taking this slow. In fact, I think if you analyze this song from a sexual perspective, it could mean that you shouldn't be scared about getting your heart broken by the person you have sex with, but instead should be prepared for it and don't treasure love or physical virginity to much. However, I don't think the purpose of this song is sexual, and I disagree with the first few people who commented on this song.

CATCHY AS HELL.
His whole album is like this,
I'm betting 20 bucks.
And this is my fave song from him
The beat is so catchy,
and the lyrics make me laugh.
