Lyrics for Hum Hallelujah as interpreted by suchaxsucker

Hum Hallelujah Lyrics
It's all a game of this or that
Now verses then
Better off against worse for wear

And you're someone
Who knows someone
Who knows someone I once knew
And I just want to be a part of this

The road outside my house
Is paved with good intentions
Hired a construction crew
'Cause it's hell on the engine
And you are the dreamer
And we are the dream
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

My words are my faith to hell
With a good name
A remix of your guts,
Your insides x-rayed
And one day we'll get nostalgic for disaster
We're a bull, your ears are just a china shop

I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital
One foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelu
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah)
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelu (Hum Hallelujah)

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

So
Hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
Vow in a parking lot
Till tonight do us part
Teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

it's about a girl and a boy having a one night stand in a parking lot.

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
and
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

then she gets pregnant because they didn't use any protection, and the boy's not sure whether or not to stick around.

I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital
One foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills.

and when he says

i sing the blues and swollow them too.

it's a reference to atavan (anti-depressant)

but you can't really give the song only one meaning

The "I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital: One foot in your bedroom and one foot out the door" thing is to be taken as one long line. He's saying that the chapel's a constant reminder of your mortality and possible death while you're lying in the hospital bed, and so it is that there's a possibility he'll be out of the door and never coming back at any moment; he is not, in short, a faithful lover.

Wow, Pete really loves his idioms and sayings; this song is ridden with plays on them. "Worse for wear," "The road to hell is paved with good intentions," "'Til death do us part," "A bull in a china shop..." geez. Well I love idioms, which is why I love FOB. That's one of the reasons, anyway.

I'd sure love to have the... lack of laziness to analyze this myself, but unfortunately I don't. Perhaps I will later. I just wanted to point that sayings thing out.

Um...I don't really know if this is any real meaning because I know most people want it to mean romance or something.

Considering that FOB is actually an intelligent band, that some of their songs tend to blend together with similar meanings. Taking from what I've read on here about "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" I would have to think that this song is about Hollywood or his connection to the pop music scene.

Its simple speculation on my part, I am not sure if it is legit. Meh, just an idea.

I love this song... it's great
*a teenage vow in the parking lot, till tonight do us part* I love how that pretty much says that teenagers think they fall in love so quickly, then just completely fall right back out.

this is definitely a reference to the atavan incident. if you watch the halfofus interviews, he even mentions that he was listening to a song called 'hum hallelujah.'
"parking lot"- the best buy parking lot
"sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills"- self explanatory
"i sing the blues and swallow them too"- swallowing the pills

and also the fact that fob says that this song means to much to them to turn into a single says something

the great thing about fall out boy is that uve been IN their songs b4, and can take from them what means something to u. In every song there is atleast one line you identify with.
For me, this is about a "hook up" or a relationship that wasnt what a real relationship should be. When you hook up, the girl always looks good to you, so "i thought i loved you, but it was just how you looked in the light" is just how you feel then. i could go on forever, but essentially, its a failed relationship or hook up, that was nothing more. GREAT song like all th others haha

Yes this song is about the overdosing. *sigh* Fall Out Boy... I used to think they were good. But then I really thought about it... and really looked into their lyrics. And I've come to the conclusion... that they are some of the shittiest human beings to ever live. They all are shallow, and f_cked up, and self absorbed. Just my personal opinion.

i definatly think this song is about petes overdose
he was in a best buy parking lot
and it really makes sense
the part 'A remix of your guts,
Your insides x-rayed' obviously makes sense if you think about it
and the rest is just metaphors
"at teenage vow in a parking lot 'til tonight do us part' " he obviously was planning on dying
and "sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills" thats the first thing that came to mind when i first really listened to the lyrics.

I think it's a teenage love in a parking lot...

Also, like I thought "I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital" could refer to like convenience. OR like ringinginmyears said...
A good thing in a bad place...maybe bad timing, or something... IDK..I'm no expert...lol

That got me wondering too and to me it means when you love someone but just because it's there with you. The chapel is at the hospital to offer comfort when things go badly, maybe to pray things to get better or to avoid your reality, same happens with relationships, they can be that escape , but at the same time it's not true love, just something to hold on to.

I do think in some ways this song does refer to Pete doing drugs

but in another aspect I think its about getting a girl pregnant.
Like she was the dreamer and her dream was to be with him
And they got together but he really didn't love her
He got her pregnant
And she got an abortion (remix of your guts your insides x-rayed)
The only thing that really bring him to marry her would be her dying or him in the hospital
(I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital)
They vowed to each other that they'd be together forever (till death do us part)
But he's coming to realize that he really doesn't love her
(I thought I loved you. It was just how you looked in the light) (that could also refer that he liked her looks not her real self)
"Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills" I think references to birth control
and taking a chance without protection every once in a while
Eh I really don't care if thats wrong
Its what struck me the first time that I listened to this song
I love it so much
Especially
"I thought I loved you. its just how you looked in the light"

Well, this song definitely refers to Pete's suicide attempt, but there's more to it than that. To me, it's sort of an explanation of everything he was feeling leading up to the suicide attempt. It's about the WHY for the WHAT we already know.

To me, this song is Pete's way of explaining a dichotomy within himself. There are two different Petes. There is the person he is, and the person he has become ("it's all a game of this or that, now versus then"). He knows that, to some extent, now is better, because of what he has achieved ("better off" goes at the beginning of the line to correspond with the "now" of the line before it). However, success isn't always so sweet (hence the part "You're someone who knows someone who knows someone I once knew, and I just want to be a part of this"... he doesn't really know who he is, or who anyone is anymore. He only wanted to be a part of something, but he got lost along the way.

The next part ("the road outside my house...") is basically explaining that he only meant well, but he's getting hurt. "You are the dreamer, we are the dream/I could write it better than you ever felt it"... a little bit harder to interpret, but I personally think it's saying that he feels responsible for representing the dreams of others... they expect him to write it better than they felt it. There is a theme here of being put on a pedestal and not feeling deserving of it...

"I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light" He thought he wanted this life, but now he's unsure. It's not what it had seemed to be.

"I sing the blues and swallow them too." This seems to be the most obvious reference to the actual suicide attempt.

"My words are my faith, to Hell with our good name"... He's living through this words, but they are working against him.

"We're a bull, your ears are just a china shop." Again, he feels out of place... he doesn't feel like he deserves this fame. He's awkward, like a bull in a china shop. He's afraid of what he might break.

"I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital" To me, this signifies loving out of necessity. People pray in hospitals in desperate times. He's loving in a way that is desperate. He's clinging on to something. Maybe his career, and the way he expresses himself... he needs it, but doesn't necessarily want it all the time.

"Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills." An example of the dichotomy. He can either live or die. He can get better or die. At this point, he's defeated... it makes me think of the point where he'd actually attempt suicide. He chose pills that time.

Basically, this song is about identity. It's about being unsure of who you are, and being afraid of who you might be. He was afraid of what he might become. He wasn't sure what exactly he wanted.

That's just my interpretation; I could be totally off. But that's what I think.

I read somewhere that Pete Wentz once said that it was Leonard Cohens song Hallelujah, that saved his life.

I LOVE this song so much. It's helped me through so many hard times. No matter what people say about this band and this album, they haven't changed as much as people say they have. Like every other band out there, they're just maturing. I drove through a blizzard for this album and I'd do it again!

Its about how hollow teenage love is.
especially for boys...
The "teenage vow" they keep referring to is the vow that most teenage boys make to get laid.
and i know this from experience. LMAO

Yeah this song is about Pete's overdose. Hum 'Hallelujah' is in reference to the song by Jeff Buckley that was playing when Pete swallowed the Ativan ('I sing the blues, and swallow them too').
'The road outside my house, is paved with good intentions. Hired a construction crew, 'cause its hell on the engines'. This is aplay on the saying 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'. He might be trying to say that his home is hell? Iuno about that. Think its really clever though (Y)
Anyways. GOOD SONG :]

We listened to this song in my Morality class in connection with society's skewed view of sex. "You're someone who knows someone who knows someone I once knew and I just want to be a part of this."Everybody's doing it, so I should be, too. "I thought I loved you, it was just how you looked in the light."The general confusion between lust and love."A teenage vow in a parking lot, "'Til tonight do us part.""An obvious twist of part of the vows of marriage, this line shows how some teenagers take sex, a normally intimate and binding act, and confine it to one-night stands."I sing the blues, and swallow them, too."Blue pills, Viagra, anybody?  Kind of evidences the preoccupation with conforming to standards of sexual prowess.

"I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital
One foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills"
The line about "a chapel in a hospital" could mean desparation, a last ditch attempt to get "in" with the higher power, either God, or Peer Pressure. "One foot in your bedroom and one foot out the door" says it's not a real committment, it's just for now. "Sometimes we take chances, sometimes we take pills," could mean unprotected sex versus sex with birth control pills or abortifacients.

The general reference to the Cohen "Hallelujah" song is reminiscent of that song's theme as well. David and Bathsheba were adulterous and driven by lust.

The best thing about FOB songs is that can be interpreted many different ways, so this is in no way the only possible meaning of this song. It is simply one that fits both the song and the unit we were covering in Morality.

Such a good, catchy song, too!

it very well could be about his suicide attempt. i remember reading in one of his blogs, whenever people were asking about thier next single, and the rumor that it was going to be this song, he said something like,
"this song will never be a single, it means too much to us"

Personally, I think the "I love you in the same way there's a chapel in a hospital" has something to do with the idea of faith only being present when it's needed - i.e. being sick, surviving a suicide attempt, etc - or perhaps faith being present when it's too late?
Just speculation.

This song could be about the OD but when I first heard it I thought it was about love and a relationship.

"And you're someone
Who knows someone
Who knows someone I once knew'

It makes me think of someone you used to date but once you break up and not see them for a while you realize that you both are different people.

"So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light"

I took this verse as: I thought I loved you but it wasnt really love, it was something else...

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

And I think this means - Maybe you made a vow to each other to love each other forever but it didnt work so now that its over you sing the blues..

That was just my impression!
