Lyrics for Hum Hallelujah as interpreted by suchaxsucker

Hum Hallelujah Lyrics
It's all a game of this or that
Now verses then
Better off against worse for wear

And you're someone
Who knows someone
Who knows someone I once knew
And I just want to be a part of this

The road outside my house
Is paved with good intentions
Hired a construction crew
'Cause it's hell on the engine
And you are the dreamer
And we are the dream
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

My words are my faith to hell
With a good name
A remix of your guts,
Your insides x-rayed
And one day we'll get nostalgic for disaster
We're a bull, your ears are just a china shop

I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital
One foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelu
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah)
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelu (Hum Hallelujah)

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

So
Hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
Vow in a parking lot
Till tonight do us part
Teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

Yeah, the overdose thing makes total sense in this song, though slightly disguised by condescending teenage romances.

Hum halleighlujah, not just referencing the song he was listening to at the time of OD, but also praising the fact that he's still alive.

We're a bull, your ears a china shop.

The news of pete's OD emotionally crushing a lot of their fans.

etc. etc. listing more would probably be redundant.

At the risk of sounding totally random, does the song (lyrically) remind anyone else of (a modern-day) 'Romeo & Juliet'? The whole 'teenage vow' and the consumption of pills...I dunno. It probably IS about Pete's OD but its just something else it reminds me of!

i agree with it being about pete's OD. but my friends and I are being driven crazy by one question. The part where they're singing:
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelu
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah)
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelu (Hum Hallelujah)

what is that from!? it sounds oh-so familiar but we just can't put our finger on it!
can anyone help me out here!

you can't just say Leonard Cohen, cause that's not fair to the song. I know he wrote it, and originally sang it, but everyone knows this song because of Jeff Buckley, not Cohen.

Buckleys solo guitar version is the version you hear most on TV shows and movies and such where "Hallelujah" is played.

It's frighteningly powerful. Anyone who hasn't listened to it, ought to.

Yah, I definitely interpreted this as him talking about his suicide attempt in the parking lot.

"I sing the blues and swallow them too", Xanax pills are blue, and I know the songwriter takes them.

"There's a chapel in the hospital", it's kind of a funny line. He probably noticed this while he was in the hospital and thought it was interesting.

in Kerrang! mag, and in K! only, pete wentz said that leonard cohen's alleluia is in here because it was playing at the time of his overdose.

This song can mean many things, from PEtes's overdose to anything,
I think that this song is about a guy who used to like a girl a lot, then she got a boyfriend, and he felt like she always played him "its all a game of this or that", he really wanted to just be with her "the road outside my house is paved with good intentions", but he knew he could never have her since she was out of his league and everyone said it couldnt happen "we are the dream", and after she got a boyfreind he realizes that he never really loved her but that it was just a deep lust, but he still "loves he in the same way" he could write her feelings better than she could feel them because she never even knew he liked her, he still loves her, but realized "it was just how u looked in the light" that made him have this deep lust for her.

This is my favorite song on the cd. It's very catchy and Patrick Stumps voice is the most amaingly beautiful thing I've ever heard. Also Pete Wentz is a genius when it comes to writing song lyrics.. he has a way of making the song relate to everyone by the topic its about like teenage romance drama, just life in general.. but somehow finds a way for the lyrics to have an underlying hidden meaning like this one about his drug overdose.. thats talent.

"I love you in the same way- theres a Chapel in a Hospital"
A Chapel and a hospital are totally opposite, one is the Church and the other is science. The Church shouldn't be there theoretically, but people need it, so it's there. Perhaps related to the song?

Pete tried to commit suicide to the song "hallelujah," like some people said here. I especially like the line, "I sing the blues and I swallow them too." Like the blue pills.

I think "I sing the blues, and I've swallowed them too" is a play on words, saying that Pete swallowed the Ativan (even though Ativan isn't really blue).

Exactly...swallows his "blues" by swallowing Ativan...isnt ativan anxiety medication?

The road outside my house
Is paved with good intentions
Hired a construction crew
'Cause it's hell on the engine

Well it depends whether it's officially "hired" or "hire the" as both make a difference. But I think it's saying that, although the road outside his house (any road really) is paved with his good intentions, he has none, so it's hell on the engine. If he "hired" the construction crew, it tried to fix it, and it either worked or didn't. If he wants to "hire the" construction crew then he wants help.

The teenage vow in the parking lot- a vow to himself. Teenage, maybe immaturity, or isolation as felt as a teenager. And obviously something to do with the Best Buy thing. "Til' tonight do us part" when they had to pump his stomach? Also, "Remix of your guts, your insides X-rayed" could be the x-rays, and the chaos it wreaked on his body.

"I thought I loved you, it was just how you looked in the light." Illusions; things he thought were right, or one way, and they weren't.

Is it just me or is "Golden" the perfect closer to this song, at least lyrically?
