Lyrics for Hum Hallelujah as interpreted by suchaxsucker

Hum Hallelujah Lyrics
It's all a game of this or that
Now verses then
Better off against worse for wear

And you're someone
Who knows someone
Who knows someone I once knew
And I just want to be a part of this

The road outside my house
Is paved with good intentions
Hired a construction crew
'Cause it's hell on the engine
And you are the dreamer
And we are the dream
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

My words are my faith to hell
With a good name
A remix of your guts,
Your insides x-rayed
And one day we'll get nostalgic for disaster
We're a bull, your ears are just a china shop

I love you in the same way
There's a chapel in a hospital
One foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills
I could write it better
Than you ever felt it

So hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelu
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah)
Hallelujah (Hum Hallelujah), Hallelu (Hum Hallelujah)

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

So
Hum hallelujah
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light

A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
Vow in a parking lot
Till tonight do us part
Teenage vow in a parking lot
"Til tonight do us part"
I sing the blues
And swallow them too

"We will pull your ears and just try to show"

I think this part is supposed to be:

"We're a bull, you're ears are just a china shop"
or something like that. that's how i hear it.

I cracked up when I heard "I Love You The Same Way There's A Chapel In A Hospital."

I think that it means that he couldn't really understand why, but he loved (what I'm assuming is) the pills. Since a chapel in a hospital kinda seems outta place to me.

There are chapels in every hospital though, it's just a very disparate image.

And for the first verse I'm 95% sure it is...

[It's all a game of this or that now, versus that
Better off against, worst friends]

The only part I'm unsure of is the word that comes after versus

And...

[We're a bull, your ears are just a china shop]

Someone said that but I though I should back it up

if this song is about pete overdosing, then i think the verse

And you're someone
Who knows someone
Who knows someone I once knew
And I just want to be a part of this

is that he could be saying he's heard from all these other people that taking drugs/pills are the way out and good for you, and he just wanted to get out of the world he was in, and he heard it was a good way. that's how i took it after i heard it was about his overdose...

It's all a game of this or that *now versus then*

That's what I hear. And I don't know what he says after that, but it sounds like instead of "was friends" it should be "was frail."

this is totally about his attempted suicide. the "teenage vow" stanza is about his soul. "til tonight do us part" totally sounds like a one night stand, it's talking about how he wanted his soul to evacuate his body that night. the hallelujah does reference leonard cohen and jeff buckley, but mostly it's "Hum Hallelujah that Pete Wentz is still alive and well." basically he's praising his life for what it is. and that hallelujah chant part are supposed to be us the fans.

There are a lot of biblical references in this CD, strangely enough. More or less a lot in this song "Hallelujah" often being a Godly praise, 'the road outside my house is paved with good intentions' = 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions', 'I love you like a chapel in a hospital'.

"You're someone who knows someone who knows someone I once knew, I just want to be a part of this"
[This means, to me, that they liked being the small band, still in the surge of things and not high above everyone else. They weren't idolized like they were now, but they were seen as a positive force. It's like silly highschool gossip, the gold times passed.]

Our teenage vow in a parking lot
"Till tonight do us part"
[This stumped me until I read that he had tried to commit suicide in a parking lot. It seems to fit. I kept imagining a girl with a sign in a parking lot proposing to someone in FOB myself, though. Like they just wanted to marry someone famous and hope they lived happily every after until they felt they wanted to get out of it.]
I sing the blues
And swallow them too
[They put on happy faces for everyone else and around each other, but it's hard to live that 'normal' life.]

"Now versus then, better off against, worse for wear" that sounds right. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the hell Patrick was saying there.

Actually, the real lyrics are "It's all a game of this or that. now verses then. better off against worse for wear" and "My words are my *faith* to hell"

I love this song. Probably my favorite from IoH

it is a teenage vow in the parking lot....i listen to this song everyday on my MP3...and i don't think it has to do with just his overdose it sounds more like a guy wanting a girl only for...well you know...cuz when they say "I thought i loved you but it was just how you looked in the light." it sounds like he's trying to reconcile fr his actions. This son rocks!!!Its off the chain.

It's all a game of this or that
Now this is there
that out of all the girls worse for wear
And you're someone
Who knows someone who knows someone
I once knew
And I just want to be a part of this

The road outside my house
Is paved with good intentions
Fire up the construction crew
Cause it's hell on the engine
And you are the dreamer
And we are the dream.
I could write it better than you ever felt it. So...

Hum hallelujah
to stop the day of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light.
Our teenage vow in a parking lot
Till tonight's "I Do" us part
I've seen the blues
And I've swallowed them too.

My words are my fate to hell
With our good name.
We mix up your guts
Your insight x-rays. And
One day we'll get nostalgic for disaster
will it blow your ears or just a china show

I love you in the same way
There's chapel in the hospital
one foot in your bedroom
And one foot out the door
Sometimes we take chances
Sometimes we take pills.
I could write it better than you ever felt it. So...

Hum hallelujah
to stop the day of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light.
Our teenage vow in a parking lot
Till tonight's "I Do" us part
I've seen the blues
And I've swallowed them too.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelu... [2x]

Our teenage vow in a parking lot
Till tonight "I Do" us part
I've seen the blues
And swallowed them too.
So...

Hum hallelujah
to stop the day of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light.

Our teenage vow in a parking lot
Till tonight's "I Do" us part [3x]

I've seen the blues
And I've swallowed them too.

This makes complete sense to me. Well all FOB lyrics do. It's just Pete talking about his overdose. He won't say it though because those memories are something he wants to forget and he forgets it through song.
