Lyrics for Golden as interpreted by wendyclear-atticus

Golden Lyrics
How cruel is the golden rule
When the lies we lived are only golden plated
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
And thought I *carry carrots??* for everyone to see

And I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies,
to stay away from me

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
When the sewage of youth drown the spark of my tears

And I knew the lights of the city were too heavy for me (too heavy for me)
And though I carry carots for everyone to see (everyone to seeeeee)

And I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies,
to stay away from me
and pray that they don’t grow up to be

This is one of my favorite songs on the album, for sure. A lot of people have said to me that they don't like it, but I think it's amazing. It's full of emotion and passion, and sounds unlike anything they've done before.

A fucking plus.

I absolutely love this song, it is so far from what they usually do, and it is so deep and with fantastic lyrics.

The first verse I think refers to how everyone/himself is living a lie, being fake, only rich on the outside when really they're hiding their true selves and they can't really handle it (lights of the city too heavy), and he carries carots (of gold) for everyone to see that he's made it.

I'd like to think that "and i saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies" is the person having to look through so much, when a person in life doesn't like to look at their enemies, but this person looks at their reflection, and sees god crying... finally seeing that he's doing the wrong thing?

I'd love to know what everyone else thinks of this line because it is the most haunting on the album and I love it to bits.

"Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams, When the sewage of youth drown the spark of my tears" - Trying to get somwhere, make a dream come true through ideas, but with the "sewage" everyone is now throwing out there and the ideals that they are living, these dreams are 'drowned'??

Let me know what you guys think.

"Carrots" is probably "karats" because as he's using metaphors like "golden plated" it would make sense t carry on the theme and talk about "karats", as in diamonds and things of that nature.

I agree with Timmy_no7.
When I first heard this song,
IMy head spun.
I couldn't believe it was FOB.
But I didn't necessarily hate it.
I actually, like Timmy_no7 stated, found it to be very deep.
The vocals are amazing in this.

Hands down the worst song on the album. They should've just left it off altogether.

my mistake, i spelt karats/carats wrong. Both with the same meaning of gold.

@ tjwells: this is the new fall out boy... if you think this is the worst song on the cd, then hop off the new bandwagon and go listen to someone else instead of complaining.

yeah, i love the song. it seems like it would have been more of a b-side but i'm glad it made the cut. I can't listen to it everytime, like when I'm in my car belting out every word, but given the right timing this song blows me away.

i think the religion aspect of the song is more of a metaphor of finding meaning in something. Maybe not necessarily God, but bigger meaning in life and being the person you are.

And I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies
[maybe realizing that things your enemies say might have some meaning behind them, and they could be right.]

does anybody else get chills when the back-up "aaah--aaah--aaah--ahhh"s come in? Holy hell.

I think this song serves as a musical interlude between the two halves of the album. Don't know why, it just seemed like that to me.

I'm one of the people who love this song, I don't get what the haters of this song mean.

i suppose the gold references may be because pete is always saying that his insides are copper when he wishes they were gold

Haha.
The lyric is "And though I can't recare it's for everyone to see".

And this is my favourite song off of IOH, personally. The chorus is beautiful. And I'm honestly no good at analyzing songs so that's all of my input.

I love this song, it's one of the best off the CD. Patrick sounds SO sad when he sings it.

The best line is when he belts out "And I Saw God Cry In The Reflection Of My Enemies".

i love this song, its my favourite of the cd and so different from their other songs.
i love it when he raises his voice in "enemies"
i don't really understand the lyrics but they do sound sincere.
and this *almost* makes me cry; "And all of the mothers raise their babies, to stay away from me"

i might be hearing things but at the end of this song when he says "...and pray that they don’t grow up to be" i think he says "be me".
but that could just be my hearing.

How cruel is the golden rule
When the lies we lived are only golden plated
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
And thought I **carry karats** for everyone to see

And I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies,
to stay away from me

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
When the sewage of youth drown the spark of my tears

And I knew the lights of the city were too heavy for me (too heavy for me)
And though I carry **karats** for everyone to see (everyone to **see**)

And I saw god cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies,
to stay away from me
and pray that they don’t grow up to be

it is about looking your enemy in the eyes and seeing you were wrong the whole time. maybe an apology made to "heychris"? petey did mess around with chris' girl. that isn't cool. i think he realizes how wrong he was. also, it kinda highlights the reason he attempted to kill himself. he seems depressed in this song, but finds the will to go on.

But wouldn't this song being sung to "heychris" make the other song to "heychris" [Thnks Fr Th Mmrs], be useless?

CORRECT LYRICS:
How cruel is the golden rule
When the lives we lived are only golden plated
And I knew the lights of the city were too heavy for me
Though I carried karats for everyone to see

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
All all the lovers with no time for me
And all the mothers raise their babies to stay away from me

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
When the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
And I carried karats for everyone to see

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
All all the lovers with no time for me
And all the mothers raise their babies to stay away from me
And pray they don't grow up to be me

Everyone keeps getting the line 'When the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens' wrong. it's teens, not tears.

It also makes much more sense with teens, because that would suggest bullying (sewage of youth) and how it ruined his teen years.

He carries himself around like he's the shit but he's really got nothing to show for it or back himself up. He's crumbling inside. He wants people to stay away from him, but he wants them to look at him and say, "You're a good person".

I don't really know what the electric dreams/sewage line is supposed to mean, except perhaps they had something stunt their growth into adulthood by starting this band.

Like someone else said about the god line, too, it's like he's looking at himself and his actions from a new perspective, from his enemies' eyes, and seeing how he was wrong.

I am pretty sure the mother line has to do when that one mother sent a letter to their labeling company complaining about Pete saying that people who couldn't be respectful to homosexuals and the like needed to return their merch and leave. The mom was mad that he shared his "political views" with pre-teens and that she didn't pay for her to daughter to hear him cuss with his sailor mouth and give his opinions; that she and her daughter were there to listen to their music and nothing else.
