Lyrics for Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? as interpreted by wendyclear-atticus

Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? Lyrics
Penny for your thoughts but a dollar for your insights
Or a fortune for your disaster
I’m just a painter and I’m drawing a blank.

We only want to sing you to sleep through your bedroom speakers
We need umbrellas on the inside, give me get me right
They say quitters never win
We walk(ed?) the plank on a sinking ship
There’s a world outside my front door that gets off on being down

I could learn to pity fools as I’m the worst of all
And I can’t stop feeling sorry for myself

We only want to sing you to sleep through your bedroom speakers
We need umbrellas on the inside get me right
They say quitters never win
We walk(ed?) the plank on a sinking ship
There’s a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down

They say quitters never win
We walk(ed?) the plank on a sinking ship
There’s a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down

We only want to sing you to sleep (your bedroom speakers whoa)
We only want to sing you to sleep

They say quitters never win
We walk(ed?) the plank on a sinking ship
There’s a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down

They say quitters never win
We walked(ed?) the plank and we walk(ed?) the plank
There’s a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down

Broken down on memory lane and all together we’re alone.
Broken down on memory lane and all together we’re alone.

In the first bridge, I think that "give me get me right" is actually "give me a spine".

'All together we're alone" I love that phrase.

i think the last two lines are actually "broken down on memory lane, alone together, we're alone."

i love this song. it reminds me of "sophomore slump.." with "we're well read and poised, we're the best boys" vs. this song and "we only want to sing you to sleep in your bedroom speakers". the two songs almost walk hand in hand.

This song makes me think about people who never pity anyone but always pity themselves just because they don't notice that they say a lot of things that are smart and true and have great advice but they never use it themselves. They say a bunch of things like(forgive and forget ext...) But they never forgive and forget themselves but that's just what it reminds me of.But i love the opening peice and the tune.

Yes, I think that's probably what it's about. Having all the advice for people and never taking it yourself:

"I could learn to pity fools as I’m the worst of all
And I can’t stop feeling sorry for myself"

The band can feel like they're helping people ("The therepists pumping through your speakers" anyone?) but they can't stop feeling the way they are.

"There's a world outside my front door that gets off on being down" backs this up too, they feel like they owe the fans a service by writing the music. Similar in ways to Carpal Tunnel ("We're so miserable and stunning") and others on the album, it seems to be an underlying theme to most of the songs.

Yeah, I think alot of the songs on the album seem to say like, "hey, w'ere doing this for you guys. love it or leave it." This song doesn't really stand out to me that much. i like the words and the meaning alot, but it just kind of sounds like something off of FUCT but a littler pop-ier with The Matches thrown in. But don't get me wrong, its still great.

It think it's
"We only want to sing you to sleep with your bedroom speakers"
And "we walk the plank on a sinking ship"

I love the line "I'm just a painter and i'm drawing a blank"
and "walking down on memory lane, alone together we're alone"
er, whatever that line is.

When I first heard this song I thought "WHOA, Patrick sounds REALLY high like he did back in TTTYG."

It's a good song and I love the line "We only want to sing you to sleep through your bedroom speakers." since they techincally DO sing me to sleep.

gets off on being down? that's pretty dirty. this song is about looking at the past and wondering about quitting at their careers. it seems to be a message on the record. maybe there won't be a new record after Infinity On High. That's why we should cherish every song and record. because every one could be the last. that is why pete scared me with his suicide attempt...

'There’s a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down'
would probably mean that by being down only can they write good songs and that since has been making them a big hit.
which would relate to how their world can get off only when they start feeling miserable.

hm, sounds logical?

"Penny for your thoughts but a dollar for your **insides**." Not insights, as written in the pamphlet.

Like f.o.b.truxoluv said, I think a lot of this CD is about how this could always be the last one so cherish every song they come out with -- not because I don't think they'd ever quit, but something bad could happen at any moment. If they lost a member it just wouldn't be FOB anymore.

The "there's a world..." line, I think it means that their fans really only want to hear the misery and not the good aspects of being famous. They want a deeper look into the rockstar's life and that rockstar has to make their lives shimmer and shine to hide that they are just ordinary people beneath it all.

Consciously not one of my ultimate favorites, but I have been finding myself switching my radio back to this song repeatedly.

Ahhhh I love this song so much.

As for those corrections, I have to admit that it really does sound like "Dollar for your INSIDES" and "ALONE together we're alone". But honestly, I really think that "Penny for your thoughts but a dollar for your insights, or a fortune for your disaster" is an awesome line. It works better that way.

Same with the other one. "All together we're alone" is so good.

"There’s a world outside my front door that gets off on being down"

i took that as meaning all the 'emo' kids that act like being depressed and down is the cool thing. if thats what it means, then that line is one of my favorite ever from a song.

this song reminds me of tttyg's homesick at spacecamp.
*Tonight the headphones will deliver you the words that I can't say.*

*We only want to sing you to sleep through your bedroom speakers*

it also reminds me of sophmore slump...

just my opinion

i think it's actually "a dollar for insides".

and at the end, i think it may be

"we're broken doown on memory lane ALONE TOGETHER ALONE"--referring to the writing process, also described by chuck palahniuk in one of his novels.
it basically means that writing is like a cycle.
you isolate yourself[the alone part]. then you have to go talk to and associate with people, to promote your work[the together part].

or that line could be just about relationships or something.
