It's about a gut who wants to tell his girlfriend how much he loves her, so he uses the bird metaphor. He means that he knows that she could hurt him, but he loves her (or does he mean love in general?) It takes the girl by surprise ("She said "what?" He said "you."She said "what are you talking about?" He said "you".)

Gosh I love this song. :D It's so sweet. The meaning is pretty obvious, I'd say. She scares him to death and makes him really nervous, but in the end he still thinks she's beautiful and he loves her. It's a story about young love.
