Lyrics for Comfy in Nautica as interpreted by emmyotter

Comfy in Nautica Lyrics
try try try try try try (repeated)
try to tell me how to do it
only because i'm new to it
coolness is having courage
courage to do what's right
i'll try to remember always
just to have a good time
try to show me that you know me
do you know what coolness really is?
winning is what you want to
but you're scared to go forth
you try to remember always
always to have a good time
good time (x9)
try and have a softer inside
shut up boy and be a soldier
coolness is having courage
courage to do what's right
try to remember always
just to have a good time
winning is what you want to
winning but you're scared to go forth
try to remember always
always to have a good time
good time

How good is this album? Hopefully the rest of the lyrics will be up here soon...

Anyway, I think this one's the same kind of themes as Brian Wilson sang about on Pet Sounds... growing up, feeling insecure but at the same time trying to find yr secure place in the world etc

This whole album seems to be someone who is going through a maajor self-developement period in their life, "Person Pitch" makes me think of how people "pitch" an idea, well person pitch would be giving a version of yourself a chance --- as for how that applies to the song, well, i'm not sure if he's giving advice to someone, or if its a self-directed vow, but it seems to be a list of life laws that one should strive for. i'm not sure if the "try to remember to always have a good time" is sarcastic, as in how some people block out talking about important things like death, or if its meant to take life as a joke, kind of like Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side." Iono

as for the songs title, hell if i know, maybe Lennox had a sudden moment of clarity in a Nautica store.

awesome some some song

I think its about three types of patience
The patience to explore
And the patience to let someone explore
All at the same time never become angry or upset
At
Your inexperience
Someones inexperience
Confidence and desire to experience
Yet al the root of it all what I love is
How it mentions to never become too serious
And never overlook how important
Humor and fun are.
These are keys to life trust me.

I think in a lot of his writing you will notice one line is the the end of one thought and the begingin of another

“coolness is having courage
courage to do what's right
i'll try to remember always

Notice “i'll try to remember always”…

coolness is having courage
courage to do what's right
i'll try to remember always
just to have a good time
try to show me that you know me

it seems as if it completes and beings the thoughts

well anyhow intentional or subconscious its pretty rad.

I think Nautica is a company that makes clothes, and bedding. So comfy in his bed. I picture him feeling comfortable in his bed, whether with someone else or by himself, and then opening his eyes and seeing a litle tag that says Nautica with their logo.

This song is about figuring out how to live and how in the face of overwhelming uncertainty. The background music is meant to symbolize a sort of totalitarian mass that calls for you to fall in line with a pre-composed model of happiness, whether this call takes the form of corporate controlled culture (nautica) or hipster subversiveness (coolness).Ultimately, Lennox is saying that "coolness" is having the courage to be your self and do whatever you can to enjoy yourself. This is meant ironically, since "having a good time" cannot be the basis for a very meaningful life--yet it's the best we can do given the present circumstances. That to me is the theme of this album.

the song, i'm sure, is in reaction to the way "coolness" is perceived and the fact that some kids feel they have to abide by the so-called scene's standards in order to feel comfortable.
especially at animal collective shows.

the first stanza is about being an newb to a trend and feeling the pressure of conforming.

the second could be one of two things.
a comment on the kids with this personality deficiency who come up and talk to panda like they know him with some kind of cocky pretention becaus of their social status.
OR
the fact that being involved in a fashion trend tends to allow one to weed out who they will and won't associate themselves with with a simple glance.

and third is just saying to be nicer and more understanding and the fact that it's a hard habit to break, being pretentious...
a similar theme to carrots'.

the lines about winning and coolness are very self explanitory.

winning is achieving your goals and not being too intimidated to put yourself out there and try.

coolness is being a good person.

the lines about always trying to have a good time, to me, hint at panda being a fairly self-concious person, which i can relate to, and it seems he has to remind himself everythings fine and to just enjoy himself.

AND the title "comfy in nautica" is stating that he don't give a fuck what he wears and that he'd be comfortable in a nautica shirt as apposed to some of that flashy trendy shit.
it's absolute genious.

...or it's just a song about growing up and self-relfection? sorry guys, i don't think this has anything to do with "the scene" or "hipsters" or "corporate controlled culture". i don't think he's trying to preach anything to anyone.

I agree with therealmcdeezy somewhat, but I think the song itself is more of a satire. Like it's supposed to be a guide on how to be cool. And I think Nautica is a part of it, because all the popular preps and jocks wore Nautica around the time panda bear was probably in high school. Hipster indie rockers won't understand, but if you went to highschool in the suburbs pre-emo/hipster generation, anyone who was cool wore Nautica.

Damn, you guys are reading way too far into the "nautica" thing. It's called that because it sounds like the loop is saying "Comfy in nautica" towards the end, after the singing. It's subtle, but once you hear it, it's so obvious.

Some interesting posts up here!
I definitely agree with some of these posts, Panda encouraging others and himself and me to not put up a front, "coolness is having courage, courage to do what's right". A couple months ago this album was sort of like my bible or I Ching. To me it sounds like he writes them kind of like as something he is saying to himself because it is so important to remember, and his message gets out to others to be comfortable and to be in themselves, well cuz life is what you make it.

"I'll try to remember always, just to have a good time"
Life is too short, ridiculous, and unasked for to not just take advantage of the happening situation of being alive. There is not much point in being hung up, especially on something like 'being cool', having a front, putting up an appearance for others, not for your self. That's why it takes courage to do 'what's right' . . . it reminds me of another lyric off this album "Take a risk just for your self and wade into the deep end of the ocean" ..

Panda rules! Animal Collective all ze vay!
