(Try)

Try to tell me how to do it
Only because I'm new to it
Coolness is having courage
Courage to do what is right
I'll try to remember always just to have a good time

Try to show me that you know me
Do you know what coolness really is?
Winning is what you want to
Winning what you're scared to go for
You try to remember always to have a good time

Try and have a softer inside
Shut up, boy, and be a soldier
Coolness is having courage
Courage to do what's right
And try to remember always just to have a good time

Winning is what you want to
Winning what you're scared to go for
And try to remember always to have a good time

General Comment:I had no clue people take brand names this seriously! Are you kidding me? I guess cause I was born in the 80s when I was into grunge I didn't care cause I was conditioned in it subliminally. Now I just make sure my outfit looks "cool" in my own way not anyone else's standards nor according to brands. Shit I'll shop at Target who cares. Ok so I do like Dr. Martins I can't help it. But shit I agree with PB I walk into Cal Arts a artsy fartsy school and you feel so conscious of yourself your like shit what am I wearing and doing here? But then I think I'm going to have a good time here and not care cause I made some cool friends from this school and they are cool cause of their character not cause of their hipsterness nor clothes.

General Comment:You guys are sure it's "Coolness is having courage," and not "Goodness is having courage?" That's kind of disappointing, I thought it was a really clever play on the word "good":

"Goodness is having courage, courage to do what's right.
I'll try to remember always, just to have a good time."

That seems to make more sense and lend some substantial meaning to the line about having a good time, but you could be right, it does sort of sound like "coolness," and if he's talked about coolness in interviews then that pretty much rules out my interpretation.

General Comment:Regardless of the context this song was written in, the innate meaning seems apparent: "Coolness," as in that staple thing people are always striving for, which is what they think other people want to see, what will make them attractive... instead of coolness meaning that, being cool is about the integrity of always reflecting on and striving for what's right, which takes a lot of fucking courage in the face of most everyone else's criticism. In spite of that noise, try to have a good time and keep being a cool-headed, soft-hearted person concerned with ethics, even if it's not what others view as a "good time". Soldier on, keep on trying, despite the adversity. And when you come upon that adversity, play this anthem and don't forget what coolness really is.

Incidentally, I think there's a bit of irony in this song regarding "shut up boy and be a soldier." When you act gently, people will think you're weak and treat you badly and try to tell you how to do it "right". They are conditioned and projecting. Gentleness is a strength that takes far more courage to employ (and continue employing) than yelling and shooting.

General Comment:For me the thing is more than obvious: He is in love with a chick but he is far too shy to go forward. So he is trying to convince himself to stay calm and think he is just having a good time, and so he could control his shyness. And at the same time he is asking her to be a little more patient with him.

Actually, this is only an interpretation of something a little more general: his shyness about something new or different, and how he tries to control his emotions in order to be able to face it.

General Comment:I may be off base here, but Nautica is the first name of a pr0n star. I'll leave the 'comfy in' part of it up to interpretation.

Song Meaning:"I'm really stoked about the way a certain pair of shoes can make me feel," he admits. "I started thinking about coolness--I just started kind of to not like it, the whole concept of coolness. So I thought, Well maybe I'll try and come up with my own definition for it. What do I think is cool? Stuff like a guy walking an old lady across the street, I think that's cool. Good deeds--and doing good stuff for yourself and for other people, as cheesy as it sounds. So the song's a bit about that: wishing people wouldn't only feel comfy in Nautica. Feel like they needed to put on a certain brand of clothing to feel like they're awesome."

General Comment:"only because i'm new to it"

life. the concept of this entire album is "how to live your life and stay true to yourself." we're all new to it. everyone lives it differently and we need to embrace our individuality, taking what we like from mass culture, and, alternatively, from our own mind and perceptions which influence our life decisions - "whats good for me/ain't for you." Furthermore, he maturely urges us throughout the album to refrain from judging those who do not "fit" into our living mode because "coolness" is not fitting in, contrarily it is possessing the courage to find what best fits for you; what's "right" for you.

General Comment:Some interesting posts up here!
I definitely agree with some of these posts, Panda encouraging others and himself and me to not put up a front, "coolness is having courage, courage to do what's right". A couple months ago this album was sort of like my bible or I Ching. To me it sounds like he writes them kind of like as something he is saying to himself because it is so important to remember, and his message gets out to others to be comfortable and to be in themselves, well cuz life is what you make it.

"I'll try to remember always, just to have a good time"
Life is too short, ridiculous, and unasked for to not just take advantage of the happening situation of being alive. There is not much point in being hung up, especially on something like 'being cool', having a front, putting up an appearance for others, not for your self. That's why it takes courage to do 'what's right' . . . it reminds me of another lyric off this album "Take a risk just for your self and wade into the deep end of the ocean" ..
