I think the narrator realizes that no matter how much she loves "sad eyes", she's just impairing them and so I think she gives up on loving them so that someone else can make "sad eyes" happy.


That's what I hear, anyway.

My very short interpretation;
They were in love.
She hurt him.
He resents her.
He still loves her but he pretends otherwise. She knows this, she can tell he's lonely
but she feels there is nothing she can do but leave him alone. "but it seems now, there's nothing you want me to do"
she gives up trying to "take the sadness from those eyes" she goes away "for a long, long time" but still he hasn't came looking to her "passed my door"
Everyday she wants to tell him she loves him and make those sad eyes happy eyes, but she keeps her "love as light as a feather" and her "heart breaking in the dark" she doesn't tell him.
she's "trying to hold it together" after all it was her who did the hurting.

Again, to put my personal interpreation to this... I see the guy as like my ex who was missing his friend who went to uni because he actually had feelings for her, and there was nothing I could do... and nothing I can do now... to stop the pain he feels.

The first verse is wanting to deny the truth behind his sad eyes.

The next part is trying to work through it, and doing normal things but it still not being good enough.

Then there is the acceptance that nothing she can do is good enough because he has to make himself feel better alone. 'Keep my love as light as a feather' - trying to just be there as a friend. 'Keep my heart breaking in the dark' - not showing him, or others, how much she is hurting over the impossible situation too. 'Come and spend the night... ' - just wanting things to go back to how they were before.

In turn, she forgets about her own hurt, focussing on him.

He has a deep sadness - perhaps depression - and it is distancing him from her. She can't reach him. She keeps things together practically, waiting for him to reach out to her. She tries to make her love for him light, not another burden. She knows he feels the pain of their strained relationship and that he feels lonely in his depression. Yet he cannot do anything but alienate her, and she is unable to draw him out of himself. It's an unbelievably sad song. I've been through this and for me, it captures the mood perfectly.

The lyrics are wrong at the end (I think).

Anyway, I love this song. It reminds me of my friend, who I don't like in anyway like that, but I do love him as a friend. And he's in love with a girl who I used to be really close to, and she's going out with HIS best friend, and he's recently split up with his girlfriend (another close friend) and he just wants to be comforted by the girl he's in love with, and I can't do anything.

so have i..
to me it talks about a relationship, a long one..they have been thru a lot,and then suddenly something comes between them be it things or people..they strive to make it work,but theyve just got really tired.
however, no matter how tired,worn out..no matter if the passion is gone,there is something still there
..they try to save it,but its just not working out..they're both depressed,something is growing cold,something has lost its spark,but the essence is still there..their bonds are so strong,that its just unbearable to admit that its ending..he grows distant,trying to pretend like nothings going on,while everything is going on..he smiles and he's sad..doesn't want to hurt her,because she means almost everything..they've been thru so much s*it together,that such an ending seems impossible..she gets the point.anyway,she has started feeling very differently for a while,but decides to try for both of them,tries to make it worth for the two..but no matter how hard she tries,the shadow is still there..in his eyes,like some dark cloud..they dont seem to communicate..she tries desperately to make it work,but every time she makes one step ahead he makes two back..like somethings broken..but she tries to ignore it..at the end she has realised that there's nothing more she can do..she's exhausted by trying,alone..she loves him like hell..but he just grows more distant,breaking down the bonds..tries not to pressure him,tries to make her presence as "light" as possible since "other" things are wearying him out and at the meanwhile inside she's dying,bleeding slowly but steadily..no matter how strongly she feels about him.he meant to her more than anyone might ever mean..they just had to let it go..sometimes its just hurts like hell knowing that there's nothing more to do.

Can't listen to this song once without crying.

My dad's father (my grandpa) died not too long ago, and I can tell that my dad has been feeling depressed. I know that he tries to cover it up when he is around me, because he's not an open person, exactly like me, also an attempt to not worry me. But, like this song describes, I could tell by his sad eyes that he's torn apart.
