Well, it would've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know
Oh, the dashboard melted
But we still have the radio

Oh, it should've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know
Well, you told me about nowhere
Well, it sounds like someplace I'd like to go

Oh, it could've been
Should've been worse than you would ever know
Well, the windshield was broken
But I love the fresh air ya know
(The dashboard melted, but we still have the radio)

Oh, it would've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know, oh!
(The dashboard melted, but we still have the radio)
Oh, we talked about nothing
Which was more than I wanted you to know-oh-oh-oh-oh
Now here we go!

Oh! It would've been
Could've been worse than it had even gone
Well, the car was on blocks, but I was already where I want
(It was impossible; we ran it good, we ran it good)

Why should we ever even ever really even get to know?
(It was impossible; we ran it good, we ran it good)
Oh, if the world don't like us
It'll shake us just like we were a co-oh-oh-oh-old
Now here we go!

Well, we scheme, and we scheme, but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well enjoy it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon
Every dawn you're surprising
And the evening was consoling
Saying, "See, it wasn't quite as bad as"

Well, it would've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know

I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes
After you had proved my point wrong
It wasn't like I'd let it go, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
I just wanted to catch the last laugh of this show

Yeah, it would've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio
(The dashboard melted, but we ran it good, we ran it good)

Hard-wired to conceive; so much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs; tiny giants made of tinier giants
Don't wear eyelids so I don't miss the last laugh of this show
(The dashboard melted, but we still have the radio)

Oh, we could've been
Should've been worse than you would ever know
(The dashboard melted, but we still have the radio)
Well, you told me about nowhere
Well, it sounds like someplace I'd like to go-oh-oh-oh-oh
Now here we go!

Well, we scheme, and we scheme, but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well enjoy it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon
Every dawn you're surprising
And the evening was consoling
Saying, "See, it wasn't quite as bad as"

Oh, it would've been
Could've been worse than you would ever know

General Comment:This song actually has absolutely no inherent meaning. It was completely improvised.

"On the first night we (Marr and Isaac Brock) just set up two amps opposite each other and just got louder and louder and improvised. I just started playing 'Dashboard,' which I'd been playing a few weeks before and forgotten about. And he instantly started improvising the lyrics, which knocked me out. To see someone produce those lyrics just off the top of his head is amazing: I've never seen it done in such a way."

Isaac didn't really come up with it with any intentional meaning, but that doesn't disqualify any meanings one might find in it.

General Comment:I think the song is just about the brighter side of things, it could be worse.

"Well, the windshield was broken but I love the fresh air you know"

Each incident in the song I think is meant to be open to interpretation but I think the overall message is that things could be worse. I think the message makes itself clear at the end of the song when this is said:

    Every dawn you're surprising,
and in the evening one's consoling
Saying "See it wasn't quite as bad as"

Oh it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.

My Interpretation:I think this song is about tripping on acid...The dashboard melted...but we still had the radio. Think about it, it makes total sense!

General Comment:I was thinking that maybe the car represents a relationship, the radio still works (it's entertaining) but it's not going anywhere so they might as well give it up, "we havn't crashed but we might as well tow it" just a thought.

Song Meaning:As much as I love to interpret Brock's cryptic lyrics, I'm pretty sure I remember reading that he simply improvised these lyrics on the fly while he was rehearsing with Johnny Marr. I'm not sure they can be said to mean much more than they mean at face value. The lyrics seem to be based more on sound than metaphor.

General Comment:I'm a pretty firm believer in that this site should be linked, "SongOpinions.net." It is stupidly rare that I'm able to find what is to be considered a valid interpretation of 'song meaning' and not have to sort through a ridiculous amount of opinions from others as to whether or not the song/artist/band is good, bad, changing, etc.

For me, the purpose of viewing this site is NOT to get like-or-dislike-based opinions from others, but rather, possible (valid) interpretation of a songs MEANING.

Having said that, is anybody out here aware of any other site available to substitute this one because, ..this one has kind of gone to shit and frankly, I've grown tired of the effort required here to pick through pages upon pages of, again, like-or-dislike-based opinions that typically have absolutely zero relation to the possible (or actual) MEANING of what this site is linked to advertise: song MEANING(s)?

Thank you to any folk who provide useful, alternative links not only for me, but for others who are interested as well. :)

General Comment:This song is ultimately about everyday life, its monotony, and life from the average man's perspective.

Picture the car mentioned as a person's life.

"Well, the dashboard melted but we still have the radio." Neither the dashboard or the radio are necessary to run the car, but when this guy looks at a melting dashboard in front of himself his first reaction is, "Holy $^#&, the car's gonna blow!" Ultimately, it doesn't, just another unecessary part of the car removed from forces of nature that MAYBE could've been prevented, but he could keep driving. After realization he is still ok, he justifies it with focusing on another unecessary component; the radio. Although not important, his lifelong car trip would SUCK if he didn't have his radio, which for the listener could represent their passion, whatever it might be.

General Comment:Anyone else think this song is could involve tripping out in a car and various realizations about life...?

"Oh the dashboard melted but we still have the radio"
His vision is starting to melt.

"Oh it could've been, should've been, worse than you would ever know"
"Oh it would've been, could've been, worse then it had even gone"
"Bad Trip", could have been worse?

"Well the car was on blocks but I was already where I want
(It was impossible, we really could, we really couldn't)"
Can't go anywhere on the drugs but he doesn't need to, because he's fine seeing everything he can imagine from right where he is.

"Why should we ever even ever really even get to know?"
(It was impossible, we really could, we really couldn't)
Thoughts about death, afterlife, meaning of everything.

"Oh well the world don't like us; it'll shake us just like we were a co-o-o-o-ld"
We're just little organisms growing on a host for life, earth, which is flying threw space.

"Well we schemed and schemed but we always blew it"
Perhaps scheming existence and meaning of life. No one ever figures it out.

"We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon
Every dawn you're surprising in the evening was consoling"
The planet is feels is a big mystery, you can go in any direction. And life is beautiful in every direction.

"I was patiently erasing and recording the wrong episodes
After you had proved my point wrong it wasn't like I'd let it go-oh-oh-oh, oh oh oh"
I just want to catch the last laugh of this show"
Hmm, Perhaps he was thinking that the world was going to end. Even though whoever was telling him everything was fine, he is convinced the world is going to end and he wants to be the last one to watch it end in order to get the "last laugh" of this show we call life.

Hardwired to conceive, so much we had to stow it
We are genetically programmed to find a mate and make babies... Like a cheap genetic trick to keep our population thriving. Human population is increasing and we can only live on earth. Just like every other living thing lives to increase population, bacteria, parasites, fungus, etc.

Even needs have needs, tiny giants made of tinier giants
Everything seems to work off of together. Like our giant body is made up of giant cells. Those giant cells are made up of giant structures that need Oxygen and various other things. Those giant structures are made up of complex atom structures. Atoms made of Neutrons, Protons, Electrons. Protons, Neutrons made of Quarks. From the biggest star in the galaxy, hardly imaginable, to the smallest known components of matter. Everything needs something else for it to exist or survive.

And Life..."it would've been, could've been, worse then you would ever know"
