A second songwriter credited is a female, Linda Bell, so there is a woman's perspective too. Gave up her virginity to someone who in heinsight wasn't worth it. Or person in the lyrics was a victim of rape or incest. ("Taught me how to live again.") Now this new partner comes into her life, is trusted with her past, and fully accepts her.
