I've just had the craziest week
Like a party bag of lies, booze and then deceit
And I don't know why I want to voice this out loud
It's therapeutic somehow

So I'm moving to New York

'Cause I've got problems with my sleep
And we're not the same and I will wear that on my sleeve
So I'm moving to New York
'Cause I've got issues with my sleep
Looks like Christmas came early
Christmas came early for me

I put one foot forward and ended up 30 yards back
Am I loosing touch or am I just completely off the track
And I don't know why I want to voice this out loud
It's therapeutic somehow

So I'm moving to New York
'Cause I've got problems with my sleep
And we're not the same and I will wear that on my sleeve
So I'm moving to New York
'Cause I've got issues with my sleep
Looks like Christmas came early
Christmas came early for me

Song Meaning:Well since every song on the album is about love loss and desperation I guess this should be pretty obvious. It's a breakup song or a lost love interest which makes him move to New York (metaphor for wanting to get away from it all). Figure the rest out for yourselves. :)

General Comment:I interpret it in a different way. A relationship makes sense to me.

Moving to new york because of sleeping problems doesn't make sense,
As a city is loud and noisy and so forth, so its self destructive.

Not the same, could be a direct reference to a person.

I find the line about christmas to be sarcastic , sung to himself
To comment on the nature of the shitty place he finds himself in.

    Well that's my opinion.

General Comment:To be honest I've got quite a different take on the meaning of this song:

He had a "party-bag" full of lies (something to do with the a girl perhaps) and now he just can't sleep.. because he keeps thinking over and over to whatever happened.. and he's going a bit mental, he realises it (just loosing touch or getting off the track.. the dialogue with Steve the guinea pig) and he decides to move to New York (playing a bit on the concept that is the city that never sleeps, but I think the truth is that he just wants to move to change the scenery around himself)

If you notice on the video he's all but happy.. it seems completely indifferent to everything and everybody.. So I guess that "Christmas came early" needs to be read in a sarcastic way..

    Other clues..
"wearing your heart on your sleeves" is an english (as british englis) phrase that means to be open about the way you feel.. So.. "we are not the same and I'll wear that on my sleeves" can be read as: Things are obviusly not as they were and I'm gonna be bloody open about it.. Perhaps so honest that I'm gonna shout it out loudly.. which "is therapeutic somehow"

Obviously this is just my take..

General Comment:"And we're not the same"
if the girlfriend blah blah theory is true maybe this means that they aren't the same - him being straight - her being a lesbian - kind of obvious but i think more than one meaning was intended

"and I will wear that on my sleeve"
meaning she embarrased him and disapponted him in public or infront of his friends.. or just made himself feel stupid for loving someone who wasn't interested

"looks like christmas cam early for me"
maybe it does actually mean christmas came early.. if hes moving to newyork - im not sure what the times are but perhaps christmas does come earlier than in britain (not sure if it comes before U.K or after)

love the wombats - their lyrics are so witty :)

Song Meaning:For me the line "Christmas came early for me" is like he got to NY and it's such a bright, full of lights city that it looks like its Christmas decoration even thogh it's not Christmas yet.

For me it is just him trying to find the place where he belongs.

General Comment:ah i love this song, i just heard it randomly at a party and hav been obsessed for a while now haha..
for me its really about how he's had a rough time, been getting into a lot of trouble with drinking etc. lately
also he's life isn't doing to well, he keeps stuffing up i.e 'put one foot forward and ended up 30 yards back' so him moving to New York is like his solution for it and im guessing the 'problems wit my sleep' is cause New York is the city that never sleeps (like everyone else above has been saying)
well thats my take.. but then again im not very good at this stuff

General Comment:and i am surprised that noone came up with the following (pretty simple) "christmas came early"-interpretation:
Loads of people around the world (mostly women ^^) are dreaming of going christmas shopping in NYC. you know, this giant tree, millions of stores, hopefully some snow and so on. So by saying that xmas came early this year in this particular song he probably means that this time theres a different reason for visiting NY than the usual one.

General Comment:i think that it is about trying to fit in.

one foot forward and thirty yards back
    - i think that is saying as soon as you try to fit in with fashion or something, it changes and you are out again, if that makes sense?

we're not the same and i'll wear that on my sleeve
    - he is different to the 'in' crowd

moving to new york cause i've got problems with my sleep
    - i agree with the interpretation that new york is a town that doesnt sleep and he is trying to fit in or something.

    christmas came early
    - im suprised noone has picked up on this on yet. this phrase is commonly used to show that something good has happened.

    meh, i tried.
