Sandy, the fireworks are hailin' over Little Eden tonight
Forcin' a light into all those stoney faces left stranded on this warm July
Down in town the circuit's full with switchblade lovers so fast, so shiny, so sharp
As the wizards play down on Pinball Way on the boardwalk way past dark
And the boys from the casino dance with their shirts open like Latin lovers on the shore
Chasin' all them silly New York virgins by the score

Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life forever
Love me tonight for I may never see you again
Hey Sandy girl, my baby

Now the greasers they tramp the streets or get busted for sleeping on the beach all night
Them boys in their high heels, ah
Sandy, their skins are so white
And me I just got tired of hangin' in them dusty arcades bangin' them pleasure machines
Chasin' the factory girls underneath the boardwalk where they promise to unsnap their jeans
And you know that tilt-a-whirl down on the south beach drag
I got on it last night and my shirt got caught
And they kept me spinnin'
I didn't think I'd ever get off

Oh Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us
This pier lights our carnival life on the water
Runnin', laughin' 'neath the boardwalk with the boss's daughter
I remember, Sandy girl, now baby

Sandy, that waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me
I spoke with her last night, she said she won't set herself on fire for me anymore
She worked that joint under the boardwalk, she was always the girl you saw boppin' down the beach with the radio
The kids say last night she was dressed like a star in one of them cheap little seaside bars and I saw her parked with Loverboy out on the Kokomo
Did you hear the cops finally busted Madam Marie for tellin' fortunes better than they do
For me this boardwalk life's through, babe
You ought to quit this scene too

Sandy, the aurora is rising behind us
This peir lights our carnival life forever
Oh love me tonight and I promise I'll love you forever

General Comment:"The narrator of 'Sandy' is an adolescent loser, the kid whose shirt gets stuck in the fun-fair ride, leaving him stranded and looking like a fool. You'd think he was ruining his chances with girl: he can't stop telling her about his humiliations, about the girls who led him on, about the waitress that got tired of him. He can't even hand her a line without blowing it: 'I promise I'll love you-forever?' Springsteen's voice squeaks incredulously. Oh, there'll always be another girl; adolescence is something you grow out of. But that's cold comfort and Springsteen's offering something warmer and more immediate: the moon is rising, the organ notes twinkle like stars, the 'sha la las' are triumphant and irrestible. The chorus promises romance despite the odds."

General Comment:This song has to rate as one of the greatest ever in any genre. In it Bruce captures what it is to be young but on the cusp of growing up. The protagonist is looking back on his erstwhile playground. Clearly he knows it well but he is is leaving the next day, he has out grown this place. There are feelings of regret, and of grading admirations for those that remain; the switchblade lovers, the pinball wizards and the boys in the casino. He knows them well they have been part of his landscape.

He knows to that he is leaving behind the girls. The factory girls and the New York virgins who have come out to the bright lights and the vicarious danger of the Jersey Shore for the 4th of July holiday. Chances are he has had his romantic and sexual encounters with these girls. They were transient like the waitress who will no longer set herself on fire for him. Not only that but she has turned her attentions elsewhere to another 'lover boy'.

    They are in the past.

As for Sandy there is no clear indication that he is offering to take her with him, just that if she loves him tonight he will love her for ever in return, though there is a wonderful tempting hint that he might take her along for the ride:

"for me this boardwalk life is through babe
You ought to quit this scene too"

    Did she go with him?

    Fast forward to Thunder Road.

A tour de force of a song. Brilliant imagery, cohesive narrative and more emotion than one man deserves to pack into a lifetime let alone one song. It stays young in my head the way I do.

General Comment:In college I worked in a small amusement park near the ocean. While not exactly like the type of park Bruce sings about, I have always had a connection to this song. It is hard to explain but the tempo and sound of this song always gives me the exact same feeling as I had at the end of summer when the park was getting ready to close, it got chilly at night, and all my friends were going back to school. This is a very personal comment I know but that’s what great songs do.

General Comment:Bruce is definitely one of the best songwriters/entertainers ever! I love this song and I always think Sandy is the beach. He is getting ready to leave the area, and the way of life that goes with it. He goes to the beach one last time, thinking he is going to make it big and when he does he might not come back. Long live The Boss! What would we ever do without him?

Song Meaning:This song shares similar themes and images with other Springsteen songs, which resonate deeply with people throughout the world. The Jersey Shore imagery works on two levels: On one level, the seedy boardwalk environment represents prolonged adolescence: The song's protagonist is ready to put the cheap thrills and casual liasons of his youth behind him. He looks back wistfully at his colorful adventures, but he yearns for a committed relationship and traditional family life as an escape from the sordid alternative that he has come to know too well. On another level, the decaying amusement park backdrop is a symbol for the decline of all urban America over the past 3 decades, a land stripped of its productive capacity, and dotted with huge relics of its once-great past, from bankrupt auto makers to shuttered defense plants and steel mills. With nothing productive to do, his characters try to amuse themselves with pinball and latin dancing, get into trouble, and search for love. While Bruce and his characters see no clear path to a better future, they route for Madam Marie, the fortune teller who presumably once predicted a bright future for him, despite police's more-likely conclusion that he was headed for a life of crime. Bruce's ability to express all these these improbable hopes, struggles and search for joy and dignity make him one of the greatest poets our times.

My Interpretation:I really like how the allusion in the first verse to "Pinball Wizard" by The Who triggers a double meaning in the "pleasure machines" line in the second verse. It's a very subtle parallel structure.

General Comment:nobody reps jersey like bruce does. anyone who's been down the shore knows these images well. i myself went to high school with quite a few girls who "dressed like a star in one of them cheap little Seaside bars".

General Comment:Yes. Therefore he might be updating Sandy. Just random talk. No greater, genius meaning behind the sentence.
