Turn around there's those eyes again.
Turn around fake indifference and I.
Watch their cold, dark sillhouettes disappear.
A hundred bodies fill this room.
And all their faces overdone.
Pain is foreign, foreign to us.

I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?
Roses, roses cold.
Roses, roses sold.

Turn around red and whites again.
I'd sell my kicks for one more low tar.
Fever hand in hand with shoelace bracelets.
Why are some girls so naive?
He didn't unbutton your blouse to see.
A better view of your heart.
Oh yeah, can't blame you for trying.

I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?
Roses, roses cold.
Roses, roses sold out.
Roses, roses cold.
Roses, roses sold out.

Sing it soft.
Make it slow.
Apples parachute the boys back down.
Fill it up.
Overflow.
A new, improved modern way to feel.

I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?
Was it something I did wrong?
Was it something I did wrong?

General Comment:I am in love with this song again! I was pretty much obsessed with Meg & Dia for months on end, basically a really long time I can't even keep track of. You know how obsessions die down, but now I'm back on the band wagon. Mainly because of this song! I AM IN LOVE WITH IT!!! I really kinda had no idea what this was about. There were lots of expressions I just couldn't get at. I merely dismissed them as Dia's just totally abstract writing style that we have all come to love. But your guys' interpretations really helped me.

So I agree this is about a one night stand. Or this could be about a girl who has lost her virginity at somewhat of a young age. Or another possibility, I see this song could be about a prostitute. Or rather, a girl who just has sex due to insecurities about love and herself, or for whatever reasons she has.

First verse, she is in a cheap motel like one poster said. Or possibly in his room. Either way, she knows the motel is trashy because of its cheap cost and what people do there.. (sex!) She's trying to imagine how many people have done business in that room, or maybe if they're in the boy's room, how many girls he has taken in there. She doesn't know their faces, and they're cold because sex isn't really love if it's a one night stand now is it? The many girls she is trying to imagine and count are all faceless and unknown, she will never know them and neither will the boy. Cold and dark silhouettes, they all disappear one by one out of the room onto their own lives he will never know about. We've also come to associate love with warmth, and there is no love in the sex the boy has shared with all the girls, or in one night stands in hotels, so it's cold, empty, void and dark. Their faces overdone, girls who are trying to impress with too much make up, overdoing their looks, etc., or maybe prostitutes (you know how their make up is terrible sometimes!)

Bridge/Chorus is mainly the coming to reality type of stuff. She knows he is going to leave her in the morning. She has never gotten to know him better as most girls wish in a relationship. The intimacy, sharing your stories, that kind of thing. Hence the, "I don't even know you".
"You won't even know I'm gone" is suggesting that he's going to brush her off and discard her. He's not going to care what she does with her life once they both leave, he's going to move on.
"Was it something I did wrong?" Girls tend to blame themselves for everything. She's probably thinking that she didn't try hard enough to destroy that outer image of the boy (tough guy, tortured soul, typical Jock with the I-don't-care-about-anyone logic, that kind of stuff) and to get to know him. Maybe she's blaming herself for letting him have what he wanted thinking it may help nurture a possible relationship between the two. But obviously, it's the one night stand, and nothing is gained from it.

    Here's the really amazing part.
The chorus is simple yet so abstract!
I see that the ROSES could be of the girl's virginity. Precious, beautiful, that kind of artistic & complex idea. If it's about a girl losing her virginity, she's probably upset and regrets that her first time is nothing worthwhile. She's cold, and her feelings are cold. The whole relationship was meaningless, despite any good intentions, everything between them was cold.
Or the roses could be a bribery. Flowers, bribes, chocolates, get the girl to fall in love with you, sex her up, then leave.

Second verse is also amazing. Reds and whites could suggest roses. I also think it could be blood on white sheets after the.. you know!
"I'd sell my kicks for one more low tar". Maybe this girl has tried so hard to please her man, that she's done drugs or just smoked for him too. For the prostitute idea, this could be how she is thinking of herself, and how into the addiction she is. How much she screwed up all of her life in everything she chose to do and how much it ruined her.
The rest mainly speaks for itself.
"Why are some girls so naive?" and until the end of the verse, the girl is wondering how girls (or other people in the same situation can be so stupid). They think having sex even with good intentions will make everything better, even though it once began as being a sacred intimacy that can only be shared between 2 people who love each other so profoundly and unconditionally. In this case, it is being said that he didn't unbutton your shirt (have sex with you) to try and get to know you better. He didn't have sex with you because he wanted to fall in love, or at least try to fall in love with you anyway. He just wanted to get away for awhile, and with all the other pleasures of sex. The girl then remembers that she herself did this, ("Oh yeah, can't blame you for trying") and realizes the consequence or the weight of her choices, and she understands why people in her situation choose the path they did. She now sees that many girls are innocent and have sex because they don't know any better. She can't blame them for trying because she too was clueless, but now she knows.

    Sing it soft.
    Make it slow.
Apples parachute the boys back down.
    Fill it up.
    Overflow.
A new, improved modern way to feel.

This could suggest singing or serenading her. Anything to get her in bed with him. Make it slow; can you refer that to sex? Or on a more lighter subject, it could be just whispering words of love into her ear. Say it slowly so she can take them in. Say words to her slowly so she can reassure herself that she is doing the right thing for the both of them.
"Apples parachute the boys back down". Don't really know about that butt thing, but I guess it's the only thing that is logical and works! Strong attraction, the booty, sex appeal, anything brings people in general out of the clouds to pay more attention to you. That's how it works, attractive people get the attention, ugly people are shoved away. Parachuting the boys back down, because their heads are in the clouds. They think way too highly of themselves, and if you think about it, people with too much air in their heads could cause them to float into the skies. That's what your ego can do to you.

"Fill it up, overflow". This could be implying having too much to drink, then taking her to bed after. Or it could be with feelings. Make her fall deeply in love with you, and make her care so much about you that she would do absolutely ANYTHING for you. Hence, the sex. Whether the boy is taking it the "nice & slow boy" route or is getting right to the chase, he's going to get what he wants.
Sex, is the new-improved modern way to feel. No more do many people sit on porches and read books, walk on beaches and take in nature. Do kids take walks anymore. Society says no. Everyone watches TV, computer, music, or just stays in front of a screen. Or everyone is always loud, no one is silent. The world is never silent. Everyone is so busy and restless. We have come to different standards. Sex is the way to go. Sex is recreational and fun. Don't waste your time on love, because that takes forever. We all know that logic.

That is what I think about it anyway! I have such a brand new appreciation for this song now! I will be listening to it for quite awhile now. You gotta love Meg & Dia!!!

General Comment:i kind of think that part of this song is from a guy's point of view?

Turn around there's those eyes again.
Turn around fake indifference and I.
Watch their cold, dark silhouettes disappear.
A hundred bodies fill this room.
    And all their faces overdone.
Pain is foreign, foreign to us.

--in my head, they are in bed after having sex. and he turns over and she's watching him, but he acts like he just doesn't care about her at all
and she gets out of bed and walks away

"a hundred bodies fill this room" i take it to mean that there have been a lot of people through this bedroom, mb like a cheap hotel? i don't think it necessarily means that at the moment there are a lot of people in there
"all their faces overdone" girls that try hard to impress a guy, wearing a lot of makeup
"pain is foreign to us" us as in guys? pain is foreign because they never wanted anything else out of a girl?

    I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?
    Roses, roses cold.
    Roses, roses sold.

--it was just a hook up, a one night stand
he'll leave her in the morning

Turn around red and whites again.
I'd sell my kicks for one more low tar.
Fever hand in hand with shoelace bracelets.
Why are some girls so naive?
He didn't unbutton your blouse to see.
A better view of your heart.
Oh yeah, can't blame you for trying.

--he would sell his shoes for a cigarette
    fever= nicotine high?
shoelace bracelets= he DID sell his shoes for a cigarette?
"can't blame you for trying" can't blame girls for wanting more than a night of sex?

if i could make up a story about this song,
it would be that some guy loved this girl, or at least really liked her
and one night some stuff went down and they winded up having sex
and here is the part i would throw in the roses:
he gets up in the morning, and she's still there. he runs out to buy her roses, red and white ones, red to express his feelings for her and white for purity (meaning like the sex they had was out of love?)
but when he gets back, she's not there anymore.

so later he gives up on looking for relationships and is just interested in the hookups
one morning, after he's crept out of the hotel room where he had a one-night stand, he walking down the street on his way home, and he passes by a flower stand and he sees red and white roses that remind him of that one night
and he starts wondering why girls are so naive, expecting more than just sex. but he can't blame them, because he once used to think that way too.

yeah, i don't know about the rest of the song. /:

General Comment:i got out of it that some dude has done them wrong, and he goes on and does other girls wrong. she knows this, and it pisses her off. like when she says 'why are some girls so naive?/He didn't unbutton your blouse to see. i think she's mad that this guy who cheated on her goes around doing the same thing to other girls, and she's also kind of blaming herself when she shouldn't be. i got that when she said 'was it something i did wrong?' hey, thats me. :P
