Lyrics for Angry People as interpreted by Alpha13

Angry People Lyrics
That's the problem, dear, with angry people
They try to go it alone
Digging in and making cranky feeble pleas
That other angries disown
Angry people think a good solution
Is getting others involved
So they surround themselves with happy people
And watch their smiles dissolve

We just drag them down
We just drag them down
We just drag them down
Until they're just like us

Angry people get so sanctimonious
Telling us what to do
Hoping no one outs them all as phonies just cause
We are all phonies too
And those of us who once had wives and families
Understand what I mean
What was once a calm and peaceful refuge
Is overtaken by spleen

'Cause we just drag them down
We just drag them down
We just drag them down
Until they're just like us

I am the singer in the band
We're only trying to lend a hand
And though it's not what we had planned
We understand

That we just drag you down
We just drag you down
We just drag you down
Until you're just like us

In a square a thousand angry people
Are waving signs in the air (HEY!)
While a million other happy people
Are trying hard not to care (BACK OFF!)
You see, the happy people's biggest problem
Is they're never fearing the worst
While the rest of us will never sleep until
Your happy bubbles are burst

Yeah, we just drag them down
Didn't I just drag you down
Just watch me drag you down
Until you're just like us
Until you're just like us
Oh, until you're just like us
Until you're just like us

First off, you MUST see this song performed live. Seriously, go buy your tickets right now!

And now that that's out of the way: The more I listen to this song, the more I think maybe it's about politics and, specifically, the band's having been criticized for "getting too political." Along the same lines as "Maybe You're Right" and "take it Back," in other words.

There are some POV changes that I can't pin down. Some of the verses are in the POV of those being criticized, trying to invalidate the protesters--and the band writing protest songs--by writing them off as "angry people" trying to drag you down, etc. Others are from the band's perspective: "just trying to lend a hand," and trying to burst the happy people's little bubbles regarding things like the disaster in Iraq, global warming, etc.

Or maybe I'm wrong and it's just a silly song.

Yeah, It's a great song.

It's about angry people. I would know, throughout all of high school, I was one of those "angry, angry people". You know, those types who say "everything" is bad, pick arguments, and generally try to make people feel bad because they feel bad. You, know, the people who are all dark and depressed and cut their hair weird and turn EVERY SINGLE THING into a political argument.

But in the end, they see the truth. So the song is about the angry people, who see the world as being terrible, and CONSTANTLY complain about it, and the happy people, who are completely ignorant about the world and are able to be happy. So it's a battle between the depressed angry wise losers, and the happy, stupid masses. And in the end it doesn't matter because both sides are hypocrites and have faults.

It also talks about how people try to avoid learning about social issues (like Iraq, Global Warming) because it just makes them feel rotten.

When BNL first launched their Blog (bnlblog.com) Steven Page got a lot of criticism from fans for talking about politics too much. Also, their album Everything to Everyone contained a lot of political content and was pretty much a flop.

In my opinion, the "angry people" in this song are people who like to talk politics, specifically the band, and how apathetic people just don't want to bother. The bridge especially expresses, "I am the singer in the band/We're only trying to lend a hand." Steve Page doesn't like that people criticize is desire to discuss politics.

I saw BNL perform live for the first time last November. The dance/fight they perform at the end of the song is hilarious.

I love the POV shift in this song. As I interpret it, the first chorus uses a non-inclusive "we" in the "We just drag them down," meaning that the singer's group of angry people drag others down, leaving the listener out of it.
Later, it's 'We just drag YOU down," pitting the listener with the happy people.
Finally, the verse complains about the happy people, and uses the inclusive "we," meaning "you and I just drag them down." He then immediately points out that he dragged the listener down to his side.

or not.

Maybe this is just because I love literary references, but does anyone else make anything of the "We are all phonies too" as a reference to The Catcher in the Rye? It's kind of funny and it makes sense, because this song kind of seems like an anti-CITR, because the main character is trying to get people out of their innocence (or ignorance).
