If this song were written today, it would be "a shrill pat on the back to an economically well-off youth-obsessed generation, steeped in drugs, smug protest and [post]-AIDS epidemic promiscuity", but let's not forget that many of yesterday's "hippies" actually stood for something, and some died or were beaten standing up for those beliefs. Your comment comes from the cynicism of today, and you don't think of how things used to be.

As for the meaning, well, yeah, you got me there, its all about promiscuity in my eyes too, and my heart goes out to the other gentleman who worked his 60+ hrs / week to find his wife 'loving the one she was with'.
Regardless, if you can't have the one you love, why not try someone else? See how it develops, of course if that can be done without stepping on anyone else's toes. I have a brother who will remain single for years, then find a semi attractive girl, that will fail after a couple of years, and it repeats. Me, I like having a partner, so if I can't get a supermodel, I just lower my standard, and have fun with the one I'm with... hope that doesn't offend anyone.... peace out.
