Lyrics for Where Have You Been as interpreted by PunkRocks64

Where Have You Been Lyrics
they call holidays an option for a reason
i hear your coming back to life just for the fourth
i've been catching all your ghosts for every season
i pray to god you won't come back here anymore

do you pray with him, too?

they should deliver all my blessings in small brown paper handbags near the porch
i wished i'd known that you were bleeding while i sat and watched you reading with the lord

i read with him, too

when you look at me
i'll be digesting your legs
cause i can hardly see
whats in front of me these days
and those days, too.

i've got to take what i'm making
and turn it into something
i've got to take what i'm making
and turn it into something
for you
i've got to break what i'm making
and turn it into something
i've got to break what i'm making
and turn it into something
for you

God, where have you been?
God, oh God, where have you been?
God, my God, my God, where have you been?

After seeing them live tonight and hearing this song played (as well as speaking with Andy on the subject after the show), I can guarantee you that it is not "joy" but is "God."

And when playing the song live, he occasionally interchanges "Child" and "Father, Son, and Holy Ghost" with "God." The lyric "child" instead of "God" was brought to his attention by his mother.

He explained the meaning of this to me, saying that while many people in life have asked "God, where have you been?" at the same time God is perhaps saying "Child, where have you been?"

PunkRock64—thanks for the insider view. They are a great band, with brilliant lyrics. The spirituality in their music is intense, honest and refreshing. This song is no exception. Check deathway.com for an interview with them. ;-)

I also appreciate the inside info.

Nevertheless, in the album version, it definitely sounds like "joy" instead of "god". At least for the first couple times.

the lyrics near the bottom should be:

"i've got to break what i'm making
and turn it into nothing
i've got to break what i'm making
and turn it into nothing
for you"

Yeah, like all of you guys I saw them with brand new, and to be honest...they were better. I was so impressed by this band and this song. I think it's a really interesting take on the search for God, saying that he is really searching for us and waiting in a sense.

I had never really heard of them before i went to this brand new concert yesterday and i can honestly say it was one of the most amazing things i've ever seen.

Jesse from brand new came out and sang with them, and at the end when he yells "God, My god, where have you been" he got off the mic and walked up to the front of the stage and just started yelling it over and over, everyone stopped, his voice went right to your bone.

It was the most chilling experience. and the best live performance i've ever seen.

to all of you debating whether it's "joy" or "god"... it could always be "Jah" on the album.

that's really what it sounds like to me.

I think he's saying "child, where have you been." That's what he sings live.

Andy changes what he says, when he feels like it.
Joy, God, Child - he's used them all before.

i like this song soo much at first i thought it was about ghosts then about an imaginary friend.
i think its about him wanting god to be there with him so he imagines him sitting there and doing everything he dos. i think that hes loseing faith. but god has been there the whole time

fyi- its "joy, where have you been?" x 5 followed by "joy, my god, where have you been?" then "joy, my god, my god, where have you been?" and finally " joy, my god, where have you been?" x 2.

maybe that'll clear that up.

it's j. i'm in the band.

its, "God, where have you been."

occasionally, Andy substitues a handfull of words live (child, father, son, ghost)... but he has never said Joy. maybe that will clear up some confusion.

It's gd poetry, but a tad too vague and persoanl for us observers to dissect. J? First verse, please?

yeah I can create an account and pretend to be in the band too, but I'm not a fuckwit like you little teeny bopping wankers.

Don't believe everything you read. He sings joy several times on the album. Clearly. Very clearly. Accept it.

First, my vote is also that andy is saying Joy on the album at least several times. It sure doesn't sound like "god"

My take on this song...

It sounds like the story of a father with a drug addiction and zealotous relationship with Christ who is physically but not emotionally around for his child, except to lecture him about Christ. Hence, the child misses his father, whom for many children, is the physical manifestation of God on earth. (Which is to say that a child's first representation of God the Father is their own father. Also, children tend to deify their parents and see them as perfect beings and persons to emulate) So, here this poor child has no father/Father to turn to - i'm sure he feels God the Father has abandoned him, too since he got stuck with such a crappy father...and of course that would suck the Joy out of his life...and he tries desperately to get his father's attention but to no avail...because his father is too busy getting stoned and waxing philosophic about Christ...

too literal?
