Lyrics for There is So Much More as interpreted by zach_12

There is So Much More Lyrics
When I heard the news,
My heart fell on the floor
I was on a plane on my way to Baltimore
In these trouble times its hard enough as it is
My soul has a known a better life than this

I wonder how so many can be in so much pain,
While others dont seem to feel a thing
Then I curse my whiteness,
and I get so damn depressed,
In a world with suffering,
Why should I be so blessed?

I heard about a women who lives in Colorado,
She built a monoment of sorts behind the garage door
Where everyday she prays for all whom are born
And all whose souls have passed on
Sometimes my trouble gets so thick
I can't see how Im gonna get through it
but then I'd rather be stuck up in a tree
Then be tied to it

There is so much more.

I don't feel comfortable witt the way my clothes fit
I cant get used to my bodys limits
I got some fancy shoes to try and giggle away these blues
They cost a lot of money but they arent worth a thing
I wanna free my feet from the broken glass and concrete
I need to get out of this city
Lay apon the ground stare a hole in the sky
Wondering where I go when I die
When I die.

how are there no comments on this beautiful song? it is about how he feels almost ashamed that he is so blessed with the way he was born. he wishes for simpler things in life because material items don't offer him anything and just remind him that he has more than many.

The first comment really summed up this entire song. Sometimes having it all idoesn't make living in this world painless, because you're still living in this world with all this pain and whatnot, and though you're shielded from it you're not ignorant to it.

The title sets out the agenda of mystery and beauty, "My soul has known a better life than this" shows the continuity of us all and the unknown, "a better life than this" condemns us all; there have been better times in the past, maybe the simplicty idea of the first comment?

I think the first lines are some of the most beautiful i've ever heard, as i do about most brett lyrics to be honest. I feel it highlights his empathy, "my heart fell on the floor" are very strong words and truly capture a sense of pain.

Moving to the 3rd verse;

"I heard about a women who lives in Colorado,
She built a monoment of sorts behind the garage door
Where everyday she prays for all whom are born
And all whose souls have passed on"

Firstly; i think the statement that he "heard about a woman" shows that he is livnig with a faith, the idealic view of a woman he has never met, only heard of, who has such a strong faith that she prays every day for all who are born and all who ahve passed shows the strength of her faith, a monument of sorts could be suggesting that we really only appreciate what we are told to; statues made by governments, the 7 wonders of the world or stone henge when in reality we should appreciate the beauty of hope and what has meaning to us.

With regards to the "then i curse my whiteness" and his luck, i think this is brought up again with the tree, "But then I'd rather be stuck up a tree, then tied to it" brought imagery of slavery and just luck in what we are born in to; why should one person be tied to a tree, unable to escape, while another is born with a greater chance of success in life and ease? I'm not sure exactly what i'm trying to convey with my interpretation of this song, but i think we can all agree it's a thought provoking and beautiful song.

I love this song.
It always gets me going whenever I hear it, it makes me think.
I think it's "I got some fancy shoes to try and KICK away these blues" .. that makes more sense than giggle, I believe.
Brett Dennen is such a talented and beautiful songwriter/singer ... this song has everything and more.

There is one IMPORTANT word mistake to notice, although it's quite a difficult one to interprete from his voice. In the third verse about the woman in Colorado, he speaks of a monument of SALT. This woman actually lives in Colorado, and she has this monument that holds a grain of salt to represent each person in the world. Everyday she adds one grain of salt for each person who is born into the world, and removes a grain for each person whos "souls have passed on". The message conveyed in her monument is that every single person alive today deserves recognition as a unique individual and as a defining part of the human family. Check out this site i found after a ton of searching, on this salt monument, http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=268&i=90 What an amazing parallel to Brett's message in his song, bringing together the souls, the eyes, and the experiences of a entire people, who, although they try to ignore it, are all connected, and the emotions and terrible experiences that cause us all to feel like we're alone, certainly affect the souls of the enitre world.

I have been lucky enough to see Brett preform 4 times (and even got to meet him), and before one of his shows, he went on a local radio station to talk and sing a few songs. The radio host asked him about this song, and he explained a lot of it, including the first part when he's talking about being in the plane. The news that he hears about was finding out the results of the previous election- and it made his hear fall to the floor. The feeling was mixed among his counterparts on the plane. As indyflip has discovered, a lot of his writing it quite literal, and to me, this simplicity makes his songs all the more honest and beautiful.
The second verse makes my heart explode every time I hear it because I can so identify with the nearly unbearable shame and sadness; unable to see why people just don't understand some things, like the stupidity of war, inequlity, etc., (he also expresses this in songs like I Asked When and Ain't No Reason)... yet somehow managing to find hope in humanity; knowing that if we tried, we could make "a better life than this".

I think what he means by the line "but then I'd rather be stuck up in a tree than be tied to it" is that he wants to be the one responsible for the problems in his life, not someone else. I love Brett Dennen, he has a terrific sound. Joshua James is another great artist I would recommend to any fans of Dennen.

This is absolutely beautiful.
I think the tree metaphor means he'd rather be up a tree because you can always climb down even if you are afraid but if you are tied to a tree, there's no way out.
For example I think in western liberal society we have all these problems we think are overwhelming but we still have the power as individuals to overcome them. Yet say in a different country, you feel like you have a complete lack of control over your own life.

I think he is cursing his whiteness b/c of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 (mass killing of hundreds of thousands of Rwanda's Tutsis by Hutu militia). He says, "When I heard the news, My heart fell on the floor I was on a plane on my way to Baltimore.......I wonder how so many can be in so much pain, While others dont seem to feel a thing Then I curse my whiteness, and I get so damn depressed,In a world with suffering,Why should I be so blessed?" Who knows...but why else would he curse his whiteness? Just discrimination in general I guess. I do know that anyone who was white was "allowed" to flee Rwanda and after they left, the killing continued.

Could it be... He hears of some terrible news dealing with the world, another culture, or other variation of and has a heavy heart for what has happened to other innocent people and yet why are others so lucky to live or inflict pain. He is torn between feeling burdened by crisis and questioning his luck but at the same time being thankful that he isn't forced to live a certain way (tied to the tree?) but able to swing freely through out the tree of life (stuck up the tree)? I guess the beauty of the song or most intriguing songs in general is the uncertainty in the meaning.

I believe the news he got on the plane was the sad, sad 911 tragedy. If so, how sweet his words to remember that day. I was at work. Saddest day of my life.
I also think the verse "stuck up in a tree than to be tied to it" means that we all face daily problems whether it is financial problems, having a butt for a boss, the car is breaking down, or even your son won't straighten up and fly right .... but .... being tied to it may mean the very sad, sad hold that drug addition plays, or maybe being in a violent controlling marriage with no way out ( it seems), or even jail. With these being your life, the regular problems do not seem no way as overwhelming in comparison.
