    Song Meaning:The song is more about the loss of his relationship with his friend than it is the relationship with the girlfriend. He talks about how his friendship was closer than friends but "more like a brother". He speaks on the intentional decpetion leaving the friend "no room left to defend". He understands the type of person his friend was but assumed he wouldn't betray him in such a way. Not only did the realtionship with the woman dissolve but also their friendship and in turn the relationship the friend had with the woman. It also seems that there is a bit of hurt in the fact that the friend placed the woman in the middle, or the it could have been that the whole need to get her was a game to the friend because of the end of the song "how could you be so careless with her heart".

    General Comment:amos lee served time and when he went away with the army, one of his best friends slept with his girlfriend. One night he "carlessly" tried to drive her home drunk and got in a wreck that killed her

    General Comment:This song may appear as though the writer is bitter that his friend slept with his girl... "and as you laid beside her i hope it felt good my friend"

    but the last line changes things... he's not bitter about that.. he's bitter that his girl got hurt in the process... it goes from "how could you be so careless" to "how could you be so careless with her heart"

    General Comment:I don't like to think of this song as cheating. The part that says "When I left, I should have known better" makes me think differently. I know he says it's about cheating, but I think it's about how he was with a girl, and when their relationship ended, his best friend started dating her, which ended their friendship.
    I just don't like songs about cheating =)
    Anyway, I saw Amos last night in concert. I'm pretty sure it was the most amazing concert I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of concerts.

    General Comment:When I saw Amos Lee last year in concert, he said that this song was about a best friend of his who had an affair with a woman Amos was dating, ending both relationships.

    General Comment:this song is about a man who was with a woman he really loved, but she cheated on him with or left him for his best friend. the song is directed to the best friend, and is about his remorse about losing the friend as well as the girlfriend. he's saying he should've known, and that he hopes it was worth it in the friend's mind.

    also, i think the lyric is "in turn lost each other" not "in time"

    General Comment:seems a troubled man got involved with a girl, and he didn't have the ability nor was prepared enough to commit and make their relationship work. in the course of their relationship falling out, his world seems to come apart as hers seems to have as well
