Lyrics for Snakes and Martyrs as interpreted by .tommy doll

Snakes and Martyrs Lyrics
everyone makes the same wave
at the same time
(like pebbles on water)
and we call all those interrupting lines
(sons and daughters)
a community
so lets join hands in song
blessed unity

but brother, i don't wanna know you
i don't even wanna know you
and sister, i don't wanna know you
i don't even wanna know you

but we're trapped
in this lovely mess
i hold you close and smile
fake, like they do way out west

so many medicines
for so many heads
and i'd help you clean the skeletons
from under your bed but

i don't even know you
how could it be me that sends you?
darling, didn't your mama
tell you not to let no stranger bend you?
probably someone here that could
help to mend you
but it's not me
got my own anxiety

sadness isn't any way to explain
you'll probably crash heads throughout
(i know you're crying tonight,)
the force of this place
(no end in sight)

it's as simple as the way
you wear your untied shoes(?)
and your righteous brades (????)
but all i know is your blues
ain't like my blues
and why would they be?
if there's one commonality
it's that that feeling is mutual
given time, you'll see
you'll see

Those are WAY off. Here's another stab at it.

Everyone makes the same wave at the same time
Like petals on water
And they call all those into the dim light
Sons and daughters
A community
So let’s join hands in song
Blessed community

But brother I don’t want to know ya, I don’t even want to know ya
Sister, I don’t want to know ya, I don’t even want to know ya

But we’re trapped, in this lovely mess
Hold you close and smile, fake
Like they do way out west

So many men are sent for, so many heads and
I help you clean the skeletons from under your bed
But, I don’t even know ya, how could it be me that sends you
Darling, didn’t yo’ momma tell you not to let no stranger bend you
Probably someone here that could help to mend you

But it’s not me
Got my own anxiety
Sadness isn’t any way to explain
You’ll probably crash heads through out
Possibly slain

It’s as simple as the way you wear your umpire shoes
And your righteous face (I’m faithful)
But all I know is your blues
Ain’t like my blues
And why would they ever be

If there’s one commonality, it’s that that feeling is mutual
Given time you’ll see
You’ll see

here's what I can hear...

Everyone makes the same wave at the same time
Like petals on water
And they call all those interrupting lines
Sons and daughters
A community
So let’s join hands in song
Blessed unity

But brother I don’t want to know ya, I don’t even want to know ya
Sister, I don’t want to know ya, I don’t even want to know ya

But we’re trapped, in this lovely mess
Hold you close and smile, fake
Like they do way out west

So many medicines for so many heads
I help you clean the skeletons from under your bed
But, I don’t even know ya, how could it be me that sends you?
Darling, didn’t yo’ momma tell you not to let no stranger bend you
Probably someone here that could help to mend you

But it’s not me
Got my own anxiety
Sadness isn’t any way to explain
You’ll probably crash heads throughout
Possibly slain*

It’s as simple as the way you wear your [something]** shoes
And your righteous rays*** (a rainbow)
But all I know is your blues
Ain’t like my blues
And why would they ever be

If there’s one commonality, it’s that that feeling is mutual
Given time you’ll see
You’ll see

* There's definitely something here, "possibly" sounds right, "slain" is harder to make out and might be something else

** This word doesn't sound like either umpire or untied to me. Please, if anyone has more ideas, please post them. The phrase might also be "[something] issues"

*** This word could be damn near anything, but it didn't sound like "face" to me.

It's not "like pebbles on water" or "like petals on water", it's "like bubbles on water"...

Oops, didn't mean to hit "Add" so soon..

Anyways..

Here's how I hear it..

Everyone makes the same wave at the same time
(like bubbles on water)
And we call all those interrupting lines
(sons and daughters)
A community

So let's join hands in some
Blessed unity

But brother, I don't wanna know you
I don't even want to know you
Sister, I don't want to know you
I don't even want to know you

But we're trapped
In this lover's lament*
Hold you close and smile
Fake
Like they do
Way out
West

So many medicines for
So many heads, and
I'll help you clean the skeletons from
Under your bed, but

I don't even know you
How could it be me that sends you
Darling
Didn't your momma
Tell you not to let no stranger bend you
Probably someone here that could
Help to mend you

But it's not me
Got my own
Anxiety

...and after that it gets sloppy.

hmmm...while i do appreciate the great concern for lyrical accuracy here, isnt the name of the website songmeanings.net? i mean no one has said a thing about the meaning yet.

Personally the song is about the role of pretense in our society. the song, to me, is about the lengths people go to in order to look unique, which of course makes us all look the same.

thoughts?

madhattern8k: I'm not so sure about that.

I get the vibe that the song talks about us being encouraged to just "feel the love" for every stranger we pass by (or be "martyrs" our community). ("so lets join hands in song, blessed unity")

However, we often don't want to make the effort to get to know absolutely everyone we see. ("i don't wanna know you, i don't even wanna know you")

So we put in a minimal effort to maintain our image. ("i hold you close and smile, fake, like they do way out west")

And then there's a bunch of other reasons for not putting in our full effort to help, like not knowing how to fix the stranger's problem ("probably someone here that could help to mend you, but it's not me"), preoccupation taking care of our own problems, ("got my own anxiety"), etc.

Really, chances are that we have no place helping each other, for all the various reasons, and that's the only thing we all have in common. ("but all i know is your blues ain't like my blues, and why would they be? if there's one commonality, it's that that feeling is mutual.")

Humans are intangibly intertwined with one another, but without any true human compassion in a world of proud individuals, quandaries such as war, famine, injustice, and oppression will not be remedied without a proactive society that works as a single unit.

I think you guys are right, about you know, the " feel the love " vibe, and the people who aren't feeling compassion for others. I always personalized it, and thought of it as a relationship, like you know, a partner doesn't want to feel for the other and they don't share the same sad feelings.

Like me and my ex, we had different things we thought of as blues. She was worried about herself, I was worried about others.

Here are the lyrics as I hear them. I think they're pretty close to being 100% correct.

-----

Everyone makes the same wave at the same time
(Like pebbles on water)
And we call all those interrupting lines
(Sons and daughters)

A community
So let's join hands in some blessed unity

But brother, I don't want to know you
I don't even want to know you
Sister, I don't want to know you
I don't even want to know you

But we're trapped
In this lovely mess
Hold you close and smile fake
Like they do way out west

So many medicines for so many heads and
I'll help you clean the skeletons from under your bed, but
I don't even know you
How could it be me that sends you?
Darling, didn't your momma tell you not to let no stranger bend you?
Probably someone here that could help to mend you

But it's not me
Got my own anxiety

Sadness isn't any way to explain

*********************************************
*This is where everyone seems to get confused.
*If you split the channels, Tunde's voice can
*be heard in the left and Leah's can be heard
*in the right.
*********************************************

TUNDE: We'll probably crash heads throughout
LEAH HAYES: I know you're crying tonight
TUNDE: The force of this game
LEAH HAYES: Drunk and insane

It's as simple as the way you wear your unpolished shoes
And your righteous braids
(A rainbow)
But all I know is, your blues ain't like my blues
And why would they be?
If there's one commonality, it's that that feeling's mutual
Given time you'll see
You'll see
