If it’s good to complicate than both of us are doing fine.
Just keep your eyes on your part & leave me alone to mine.
If it’s good to instigate than we’re fast horse, bet on us.
I’m not calling you an animal I think we just fight too much.
C'mon, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
even diamonds start as coal.
We’re both aligned in framed of mind but circumstance has got us good.
& now you’re seeing a side of me I wished no one ever would.
Yeah, if it’s right to pick a fight, we’re fingers in a sugar bowl.
Love isn’t perfect, even diamonds start out as coal.
Come on, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
even diamonds start as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete & infantine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give it time girl, the fire feels divine.
The sweetest things they burn before they shine.
We think way too much
look at us losing touch!
A promise is a promise until…
Yeah, in spite of this we’re doing just fine
even diamonds start as coal.
Give us time to shine
Even diamonds starts as coal.
Even diamonds start as coal.
We’re incomplete & infantine
even diamonds start as coal.

General Comment:I totally agree with jrd33! Me and my girlfriend have been through some fights and arguements recently. I have no intention of letting her go. Not everything is gonna be perfect in a relationship. It all starts out as coal, but as time goes on it gets better and better and becomes a diamond. Incubus is amazing, this has to be in my top 5 favorite by them.

General Comment:and he says, "youre seeing a side of me I wish noone ever would"... this is true there are bad parts of every person and to truly love that person you must love the good and bad parts. Though you may not agree or be attracted to those bad things, it helps to love that person fully, good and bad, beautiful and ugly. Im talking about bad habits, maybe external imperfections, and even character flaws. Try hard and be amazed by the diamond that is formed.

General Comment:Coal is the beginning of the relationship and is true. Also when he says "keep your eyes on your part and leave me alone to mine", this is important - keep your criticisms to yourself unless they are well thought out and spoken about in an intelligent and loving way which seeks to contruct not destroy the other person. He says "your part" which means that there are different roles in any relationship, and if you try your best to just do your role no matter how hard it becomes, don't cave in and pick at the other person's role - stick to your role no matter what and let God work on the other person.

General Comment:You could also look at the Diamond part, as the 60 year anniversary. (Silver is 25 years, Gold is 50, Diamond is 60)

General Comment:i guess what i think this is is the second part of a relationship....oil and water being the first part. This isthe more confident side of the relationship, saying things may be bad now, but it *will* get better! I completely agree with HisDudeness on that :D

General Comment:i think this and "oil and water" are two different viewpoints on the same relationship and its problems.

"oil and water" is pretty self-explanatory, saying that it's just not gonna work out no matter what is said or done.

"diamonds and coal" is the other side of that argument, saying that all relationships need work and that nothing is perfect. you need to work on the relationship if you want it to last.

General Comment:Where did the good ole days go? It's called maturing. Bands change over time and if you adore them, you'll accept it (maybe not like it, but accept it).

I love this song. My boyfriend and I saw them in concert a few nights ago and this song just fits our current relationship so much. We've started fighting a lot but we're not going to break up...after three years, we've been through too much to let some silly fights ruin everything. I loved this song when it first came out but now I'm in love with this song after hearing it live!

General Comment:WORST Incubus song ever. Reminds me of a Police song, which I like, but hearing Mike play like this is embarassing. I laugh everytime Brandon says "I'm not calling you an animal, I think we just fight too much." That is soooo cheesy and not Brandon at all. Where did the good ole days go?
