Lyrics for This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race as interpreted by woulduhvtheguts

This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics
I am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words
And (don't really care which side wins)
As long as the room keeps singing that's just the business I'm in

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

I'm not a shoulder to cry on, but I digress

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

I wrote the gospel on giving up (and looking pretty sinking)
But the real bombshells have already sunk (primadonnas of the gutter)
At night we're painting your trash gold, while you sleep
Crashing not like hips or cars but more like p-p-p-parties

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

Bandwagon's full, please catch another

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

All the boys who the dancefloor didn't love, and all the girls whose lips couldn't move fast enough, sing, until your lungs give out

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Now You)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Wear Out The Groove)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Sing Out Loud)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Oh,oh)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

I couldn't agree more with omgitsjami.
"This whole 'scene' bull is an arm's race. Pete's words are so clear, and if half of you knew the shit he's gone through, you'd CLEARLY understand this song."

seriously.

the scene is over.
if you want it.
(you know...like john and yoko...)
anyway, why do they have to swear? it reminds me of panic! at the disco.
and i'm sick of seeing "gangsters" in everything.

i think this song is amazing. i NEVER thought FOB had it in them but apparently they do and just for this song they deserve every dollar, fan, and fame they've ever gotten.

everyone who has written a comment seems 2 make the assumption that pop music is bad. not all pop music is terrible. the only reason everyone want to trash it is because to them it means conformity, it means kelly clarkson and it means ashley simpson. that's only one small part of the pop scene.

and in case you didn't notice your precious FOB is from the pop scene. i own every album and it has pop written all over it. it's not punk, punk is dead to me, they stopped making it when the millenuim rolled around.

and FOB didn't sell out to the music company. just because they became famous doesn't mean they sold out. it means someone realized their potential. If they really had sold out to the music company this album would be another FUTCT. why would producers want to screw around with good thing? and why would they launch thier friends and enemies tour with such small venues and sell tickets to only long time members of their web club thingy?

those people who call themselves true fans are liars. a true fan respects a band's growth. they don't leave when their fav band gets famous and cry "they've sold out" that's idiotic. just like a real friend, a real fan is happy when a band achieves the fame and pay they deserve. so shut up you posers

I THINK THIS SONG IS ABOUT HOW EVERY1 IS JUMPING into the gangster and emo scene

while they been emo for the longest time

there practically were the ones that bought it back

when u look at ppl today

they try to b 3 things

gangster

emo

or hardcore

so in a way it is an arms race who can take over the music industry

this song is such a great song, its so different...thank god they didn't write another FUCT or tried to recreate TTTYG. the video is awesome, it is their best so far.
well, as for the meaning, for the people that said that it was a response to TBS Spin, i couldn't agree more. although i think that there's more to it. i think they are mocking (like other people said before) the kids that only listen to them because its on mtv. like the whole "now you" thing. but going back to the TBS thing, when he says "Crashing not like hips or cars but more like p-p-p-parties" Adam once fractured his hip, and could only perform sitting. i don't know if they crashed any cars, but it would make perfect sense if they did. also the p-p-p-parties could be mocking Adam, because he sometimes likes to stutters when he sings. just my opinion.

This song is, yes, an attack on the 'scene' that FOB has become a part of (if you can call it that). These themes have been showing up since their FUCT days.

However, this song is also a DIRECT RESPONSE to Taking Back Sunday's "Spin," which was a song mocking FOB's rise to fame. Adam writes in Spin, referring to fame in the music industry, "I heard that this is where, where the party is..." and Pete responds with, "Crashing not like hips and cars but more like parties." It's pretty clear.

However, FOB also makes it clear they don't care who wins or loses in this "feud." But Pete definitely wanted to have the last word.

..maybe this whole song is meant to be ironic in a way..

they are talking about "the scene" being decieveing, and i dont really listen to fob, but this isn't really their style you know..

iono just a thought
kinda neat beat to it though

If you've seen the video, they parody so many artists, like...Avenged Sevenfold in Seize the Day with the guitar solo on the coffin (or it could just be a tribute to Slash) and how Peter Wentz awakes from his coffin just like the Helena video by My Chemical Romance.

Just thought I'd like to point that out. :]

I love the coffin scene, I laugh so hard when Joe gets on it.
Anyway, yeah, I agree, it's like they're fed up with all this scene shit and want everyone to know

I also love their ability to make fun of themselves, it's great

ok, so I heard this song on the radio for the first time a couple of days ago and I must agree with a few of the past comments that though it is different, this is definately FOB. I recognized Patrick's voice right away. You can't say they sold out because Patrick (and Joe, I think, and maybe Pete too) are into hip hop and this obviously was influenced by it. All of their albums have been radically different, from their early EPs to TTTYG to FUCT, so I expect this album to be fresh and different and that's what I love about FOB, they aren't predictable.

I would also like to point out that most people here (as with many other songs) have simply stated whether or not they like this song, etc. and not what it means. When I looked up the lyrics (essential to any FOB song..I love Patrick's voice but it usually is hard to understand what he's trying to say), anyways, when I looked it up, this is what sruck me right away:

THIS REMINDS ME OH SO MUCH OF THE MOVIE LORD OF WAR!

it was a brilliant movie, and I think FOB is paying tribute to it, as well as the disgusting state of this dog-eat-dog society, and the repercussions thereof.

[also, I love the part in the video when they vindicate Pete's, well, you know, the photos...very clever, but that's to be expected from FOB]

well,
I love this song,
it's so different
not what I'd expect from Fall Out Boy,
but it still has the FOB flair.
I agree with Bella___muerte.
it is very distinctly FOB.
can't wait for the album.
I don't care what anyone says, I love it.

to me this song is talking about how
people aren't making music for the right reasons as youngblack_fabulous said,
and how people are making music now almost as a competition
like
"Who can get richest fastest?"
or
"who can get to number one on TRL the fastest?"
it's tlaking about how lots of music isn't genuine anymore.
anyone agree?

i really like this song, its very differnt from their other songs and catchy. "bandwagons full, please catch another" is sucha good line. its really true, i mean most of FOB's fanbase now is 7th grade girls who enjoy 50 cent and anything on mtv. its really sad. i mean fall out boy even has dance dance on ddr, come on. i just cant stand people who only like sugar were going down and dance dance and only like FOB because they get play on mtv. GODDDDD, listen to some real music and bring back the FOB scene

I can't stand Fall Out Boy, but I must say this song is pretty good. I think it might only be because it does not sound anything like their other songs. Whatever the reason may be, I like it.

oh and also i agree with whoever said that just cause u heard sugar on the radio doent make you a true fan but i mean if u did hear sugar and took the time to liten to their other songs and albums and have insight on them and at least know ALL of their names(not just petes) and what they play and like info like that then you could be a true fan. this site is no longer about the meanings because in these 90 some comments i've seen perhaps 2 that acctully say something about what the song means...

YOu know, i'm beginning to think that all the people who cry foul and bash FOB for their lyrics "not making sense" don't even try.

They expect some cheesy cliched lines that are gonna be obious and poppy. So then when it doesn't look like it makes sense, they go "Ohp! Well thats that! I knew they sucked."

With FOB -you have to look deeper. Otherwise you will sound like an idiot.

This one isn't even all that hard!

You can basically get it all from the first verse:

-I am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words.

He's the songwriter(arms dealer), writing songs (weapons in the form of words), which btw, is a nice follow up to My heart is the worst kind of weapon.

With me so far?

-Don't really care which side wins, as long as the room keeps singing...that's just the business I'm in.

The "weapons" songs are all he does. He doesn't influence us to do anything with them. He just writes them. thats it. Theyre not supposed to care what we do with them and his lyrics, they're not supposed to care if we "get it" or not (don't care which side wins), as long as we all keep singing along and buying records (as long as the room keeps singing). And you can't get mad at them for it, because thats the business that they're in now.

Just like actual arms dealers - have you ever seen Lord of War? - Arms dealers would sell guns to Israel AND Palestine; they don't care who wins, as long as they keep buying guns. Thats just the business they're in.

Powerful song. Not really bashing the scene, per se, but more bashing the bashers, saying, "look. We know what you think. And guess what? We don't really give a shit. We're gonna do what is expected of us, and thats making good music, whether you agree or not."

And this song could SOOOO have gone on FUCT so i don't understand why everybody is all "OOOHHHHH FOB SOLD OUT THEY SUCK BLAH BLAH FRICKING BLAH."

This is still fall out boy. Shut up.

And i can say that, seeing as how i've known them since before a lot of people here did.

They grew up in my backyard. I knew them when they were just playing in basements and parties for fun.

You know the DVD where they just had an acoustic in somebody's living room?

Stuff like that.

So....its still them. You don't like it? Then you're not a Fall OUt Boy fan. You're just a fan of a record (TTTYG or FUCT....you pick. I could even say AEWYG, but i'm sure half of you wouldn't know what i'm talking about)
