Lyrics for This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race as interpreted by woulduhvtheguts

This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics
I am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words
And (don't really care which side wins)
As long as the room keeps singing that's just the business I'm in

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

I'm not a shoulder to cry on, but I digress

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

I wrote the gospel on giving up (and looking pretty sinking)
But the real bombshells have already sunk (primadonnas of the gutter)
At night we're painting your trash gold, while you sleep
Crashing not like hips or cars but more like p-p-p-parties

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

Bandwagon's full, please catch another

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

All the boys who the dancefloor didn't love, and all the girls whose lips couldn't move fast enough, sing, until your lungs give out

This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Now You)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Wear Out The Groove)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Sing Out Loud)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
(Oh,oh)
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

Also if they weren't trying to experiment with sounds then you'd complain they sounded the same.

i met patrick and andy at a show in 2004 in england once. they were really nice. they were really 'scene' then, all the scenesters had come to their show to watch them.
now they're fanbase is fat 14 year old girls. who masturbate over pete wentz.
not something i plan on being part of :)

I hated this song when i first heard it.

It's SO different from anything they've ever done.

I don't beleive it's the real FOB at all, but i'm realling starting to like the song.

I hope the new album doesn't all sound like this. It's far too poppy.

I LIKE THE OLD FALL OUT BOY.

But good on them for trying something new.

I guess ?

I'm pretty sure it's "primadonnas of the gutter", not "we're the diamonds of the gutter".
Well, on my version at least.

All you snobs who hate the Mtv crowd are idiots. Kids don't like the song because its on Mtv, they like the song for the same reason you like the song, because its a cool ass song.

Who the hell cares if you heard of fallout boy because you researched the latest signed bands and you were their fan for however long or if you heard them on the radio.

Either way, you heard them and you like them cause of the music they make. If they make good songs, why wouldn't they want everyone to hear them. Idiots. This whole music "scene" needs less stuck up ass holes like you people and more people that just appreciate good songs whether you like them to dance to or like them because of their deep lyrical meanings, whether you liked them since they formed or whether you just found out about them.

Fallout Boy makes cool songs, therefore I am a fan of theirs. I don't give a rats ass about how long you've been listening to them.

And I'm still yet to completely understand all the lyrics. By the way this is a song meanings site, not some random blog for your opinions on fallout boy. So yea, thanks for everyones views on the lyrics that put them, I'm still not decided on what this song means completely tho. It could be a lot of things.

I've been reading around, and i officially LOVE TAASIAAR andCTOL, i am perspiring from the irony.

this aint a scene..., was purposefullt made "poppy" to get all the pop ppl [that Pete hates] to like the song, FoB is in fact, bulleting the words at the mocking birds, and theyre singing. So, all the poopy ppl singing along with these song are actually singing about how much they are hated, which is just awesome. in CTOL, i think the line says "this is what you get for feigning sweet love" regarding the poppy ppl, and they sure are getting it. They just don't get it. O.o

This song is about every single one of their teeny bop fans... The entire scene as it is today.

What do you think they're referring to when talking about armraces? All you kids who sit on myspace pressing refresh every 30 seconds waiting for the latest news on fall out boy. After all, everyone will think you're SO cool if you show up the next day with the latest happenings.

But hey, you guys will all pretend they are talking about someone else (maybe I am too) and definately not you! Keep on faithfully listening though, they're making tons of bucks off you.

"Some of the responses are absolutely ridiculous. What happened to just liking a song because you like the song? Am I not allowed to enjoy a song or a band anymore without being labeled by a certain stereotype, or god forbit, "scene". God what a joke."

I agree, if you like a song, you listen to it, you shouldn't be stereotyped for it. And the people who listen to songs just to be apart of the scene, that's just stupid. Listen to music YOU like, not what will make you 'Cool'

This song, i like.

Anyone read the comment left here about Spin by Taking Back Sunday being directed toward FOB? Regardless of if that is fact or fiction, it's interesting to see there are some paralells, especially the 'crashing the party" idea where TBS had written "this is where the party's at" To me, it just seems like it could be another 'spin' on the song...and besides, fued between bands often help to sell records on both sides, hence the "and I don't really care which side wins as long as the room keeps singing..." part.
Like I said, not fact, not necessarily fiction, just a thought

To those complaining, they've always been poppy, and it's why most people like them. 'POP-punk/POP-rock', remember? That’s all they’ve ever claimed to be.
Now a couple of lines by Pete that in a way help with the meaning of this song... In a way.

++ besides there is so much other good music coming out right now- go over to absolutepunk.net and see whats coming up... its way more fun then looking for pictures of dudes in bands kissing eachother

++ we worked on a new song today using a couple of strange instruments, who knows if it will end up on the record. i like that we are stretching because it feels so natural. we arent racing, we are trying to craft songs that we will love forever, not just until the next record comes out.

++ i can't sleep ever because i am scared to disappoint you.

The first one: he's saying to look for good music rather than bands kissing. Sounds like just a little stab at people who like the kissing more than the music, no?
The second: 'we are trying to craft songs that we will love forever'. They're trying something new... Crime? Why keep on going with the old, when it's only good. Sure they'll get bad in the mix, but if you don't experiment, is there really much chance you'll find great?

The third is the one that really makes it for me. They are writing the music for the fans.

So finally onto the song meaning, heh... This is just my opinion,...
They're not saying they hate their fans. They're trying to tell them that there’s more, beyond MTV and being scene. They’re saying to like bands because they like the music/lyrics, not because it’s cool, and not to hate them cause they’re on the radio. The ones who like/hate them cause everyone else does should be the ones looking into it… But of course, they won’t.

++ ‘I am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words/And (don't really care which side wins)’
__ I see this as a MTV/scene fight (they do say ‘THIS ain’t a scene’, therefore I take it as the pop-punk scene they come from). The scene kids hate the MTV kids. The MTV kids think they’re cooler than the scene kids.

++ ‘As long as the room keeps singing that's just the business I'm in’
__ This is typical of FOB, and the real fun-poking. I take it to be sarcasm. MTV wins, they’ll still be liked because MTV tells people to. Scene kids win, they’ll start liking the band again cause they’re not on MTV anymore. The room keeps singing.

++ ‘This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race’
__ Exactly what it says. Everyone fights everyone else to be coolest

++ ‘Bandwagon's full, please catch another’
__ Too many fans who don’t really like them, but tell everyone they do.

Just my opinion, and I’m never good at expressing it.. Sorry for the long post.. I thought the journals needed to be here.

Haha I love this song, it's different but catchy

Yeah I agree with the numberous of people who quoted Pete, this song is making fun of the scene.

The song title gives it away I think

This ain't a scene, it's an arm race

An arm race is a race where usually there's no real purpose but to come out on top of whoever it is your against

Scene kids tend to get really competitive and then they start with their I started that trend and they start even more and basically the only reason they keep trying to come out with something new is to come out on top.

This song is really fun. I love these two lines.

"This bangwagon's full please catch another"

Reminds me of all the emo/scene kids always sitting there complaining about how everyone's jumping onto the bangwagon

"Primadonnas of the gutter"

Reminds me of those over the top scene girls with the choppy hair at the top and the extensions when it just looks overdone and trashy, but yet they're still really vain about their hair.
