The shackles are undone
The bullet's quit the gun
The heat that's in the sun
Will keep us when it's done
The rule has been disproved
The stone, it has been moved
The grain is now a grove
All debts are removed

Oh, can't you see what love has done
Oh, can't you see what love has done
Oh, can't you see what love has done
What it's doing to me

Love makes strange enemies
Makes love where love may please
Soul in its striptease
Hate brought to its knees
The sky over our head
We can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart
And out of my head

Oh, can't you see what love has done
Oh, can't you see what love has done
Oh, can't you see what love has done
What it's doing to me

Please don't ever let me out of here
I've got no shame
Oh no, oh no

Oh, can't you see what love has done
Oh, can't you see
Oh, can't you see what love has done
What it's doing to me

Oh, can't you see what love has done
I know I hurt you and I made you cry
Oh, can't you see what love has done
Did everything but murder you and I
Oh, can't you see what love has done
But love left a window in the skies
Oh, can't you see what love has done
And to love I raphsodize

Oh, can't you see what love has done
To every broken heart
Oh, can't you see what love has done
For every heart that cries
Oh, can't you see what love has done
Love left a window in the skies
Oh, can't you see what love has done
And to love I raphsodize

Oh, can't you see

My Opinion:Ooops. I placed my comments under Spencil 12-10-2009 post by accident.
Sorry for the misplacement (and unnecessary duplicate)..

    .......

I like both versions of the video, but I slightly prefer the "alternate" video version.
    youtube.com/…

I like the "go backwards in time" element of it.

    It reminds me of this:
    Into the Heart
    songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858526179/
    and
    Mark 10
13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” 16 And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

    ......

Here are some biblical references which I believe can go alongside this song, in my opinion.

    * The shackles are undone
    Nahum 1
12 This is what the Yahweh says:
“Although they have allies and are numerous,
they will be destroyed and pass away.
Although I have afflicted you, Judah,
I will afflict you no more.
13 Now I will break their yoke from your neck
    and tear your shackles away.”

    Ephesian 5:
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
    ...
13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”

    =========

    * The stone, it has been moved
    * The grave is now a grove (note: spelling?? "groove")
    Matthew 27
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away
    Matthew 28
2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.

    * The rule has been disproved
    * All debts are removed
    Colossians 2
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

    Ephesians 2
11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “Uncircumcision” by the so-called “Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, 16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

    * I've got no shame
(maybe a stretch on this one)
    Philippians 1
18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

    * I know I hurt you and I made you cry
    * Did everything but murder you and I
    Acts 2
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    * But love left a window in the skies
    Acts 1
9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

    Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

    Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

    Ephesians 5
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

    =========

Of course when thinking upon the forgiveness of God through Christ (for those who come to saving Grace, who repent of their sin(s), acknowledge the Deity of Christ as the Incarnate God who came in bodily form (Colossians 2:9, 2 John 1:7) (who became a propitiation for sin and the object for the Wrath of God)), when thinking upon all that....the next thing that comes to mind is how believers in Christ are to treat each other.

    Ephesians 4
30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

    Colossians 3
12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful

    General Comment:The shackles are undone
    The bullet's quit the gun
The heat that's in the sun
Will keep us when there's none
    The rule has been disproved
The stone, it has been moved
The grave is now a grove
    All debts are removed

While interpretation is something that everyone can engage in differently, bringing with them their own experiences and beliefs, the opening stanza to the song strikes me as one of the more blatant expositions of the gospel U2 has done. here's my read on it:

The shackles that are undone refers to the shackles of sin that the love of God broke in the Christ. Paul in Romans 6 talks about how we were slaves to sin but set free by the love of Christ.

The Rule that is disproved is the rule (reign) of death over the earth. Through Christ's resurrection (which comes up in the next line) death is defeated.

The stone that is moved is the stone that covered Jesus' tomb.

the grave is now a grove refers to the fact that the grave is now empty. No longer dead, Christ is risen and what once held a body (grave) is now no more than a grove in the ground.

The debts that are removed are the debts of sin owed by everyone who has ever wronged themselves, others, God, or creation. With Christ's death and resurrection our debt of sin can be removed because Christ has taken that debt (sin) upon himself.

further along in the song when Bono sings that the sky over our head can be reached from our beds I think he's speaking about prayer. Those nights were you lie on your bed and pray to God. God's love has left a window in the sky so that we can reach him (even from our beds)!

there's lot's more to say about the song, it is wonderful and full of rich and beautiful meaning. But at its core I think it is, as Bono sings at the very end, a rhapsody to the source of Love, to the real and true Love which is in God.

"Oh can't you see what love has done"
maybe it's a question.. Can YOU see what love has done?

General Comment:"So, has Bono been reading up on the theology of the body? Perhaps. Or, maybe as John Paul II himself emphasized, these are simply truths that find an echo in every human heart and Bono has tapped into it."

Beautifully explained, tmu2dc. This, along with Sweetest Thing, is pure Bono laid bare. Anyone can really appreciate this lovely song if "you let him in your heart, And out of your head..."

General Comment:Bono said this song is about sexual redemption:

Fast forward to late December 2006. A friend called me on the phone and said, "Have you heard the new U2 song? It’s called ‘Window in the Skies.’ You’re not going to believe it." I typed the title into Google and listened with amazement. It’s a song about how Christ’s resurrection can redeem the sexual relationship. The chorus repeats the joyous refrain, "Oh can’t you see what love has done? Oh can’t you see what love has done, and what it’s doing to me?" Here is a sample of some of the verses:

    The rule has been disproved
The stone it has been moved
The grave is now a groove
    All debts are removed

    The sky over our head
We can reach it from our bed
If you let me in your heart
    And out of my head...

In the bridge, Bono echoes the joy of Eden - and one of the main themes of John Paul’s teaching - when he cries: "I’ve got no shame, oh no, oh no!" Then, admitting the many ways he has hurt his wife (Bono has been faithfully married to his high school sweetheart for nearly 25 years), he says, "But love left a window in the skies, and to love I rhapsodize." As the song ends, he offers the same hope "to every broken heart, for every heart that cries - love left a window in the skies."
So, has Bono been reading up on the theology of the body? Perhaps. Or, maybe as John Paul II himself emphasized, these are simply truths that find an echo in every human heart and Bono has tapped into it.

General Comment:okay, first, whats with all the christian comments? i mean seriously, just because something is meaningful doesnt means its about god.

"I know I hurt you and I made you cry.... Did everything but murder you and I.... But love left a window in the skies" ~~i think this part is saying that everything was done wrong with love left hope

i think that sums up the song for me

General Comment:Whoops. I meant to write 'the grave is now a groove' (not grove!)

General Comment:Amen, casmith! This song is about Jesus and 'love' refers to Him. 'The grave is now a grove' (not grain!) and also, 'Please don't ever let me out of You' are the correct words. I have been a HUGE U2 fan since 1981 and they are Christians and mostly all of their songs have Christian meanings. They are awesome and this song is one of their best ever, it my opinion :)

General Comment:It sounds to my a bit like the part "You let me in your heart/And out of my head" means that they stopped caring so much about where the person came from, how much money they have, etc. and just loved each other through the heart.

General Comment:I found a article by Christopher West who is a writter and speaker for Pope John Paul II Theology of the Body, that said that he thinks that the song is about the redemptiveness of love.
